На прошлой неделе состоялась глобальная презентация новых смартфонов линейки Poco. Компания не так давно оформилась в независимую от Xiaomi единицу и стремится развивать популярность своих смартфонов по всему миру, в том числе и в России. 

The relatively young brand has already shown that it can create devices with its own face and character, as well as worthy characteristics “under the hood”: the same Poco M3 turned out to be successful and distinctive.

And here, in the context of updating the line, a small logical incident arose. The hero of today’s review is … a redesign of the Redmi K40 model released for China for the global market. An ambiguous move in the context of the recently announced status of an independent company.

Does this make the smartphone less interesting? We understand the review of the novelty, which promptly drove up to us from the Middle Kingdom.

Appearance, ergonomics

На тесте побывала чёрная версия аппарата, в продажу поступила белая и синяя версия с текстурированной панелью под защитным стеклом. Последняя смотрится определённо ярче своих коллег. 

Стоит взять смартфон в руку, и сразу ощущается его главная эстетическая особенность: глянцевое и даже зеркальное стекло Gorilla Glass 5 на спинке мгновенно собирает на себе отпечатки пальцев и другие загрязнения. 

Такую спинку либо нужно часто протирать, либо использовать включенный в комплект поставки прозрачный силиконовый чехол. Помимо блока питания, скрепки и документации, в коробку также положили переходник с Type-C на проводные наушники и фирменные наклейки Poco.

Для своей диагонали Poco F3 не воспринимается как чересчур большой смартфон, в руке и кармане лежит удобно. Сказывается относительно небольшая толщина и стройные рамки вокруг экрана. Панель под экраном чуть толще, это сделано для исключения случайного ввода в этой области. Загибов у дисплея нет, это плюс к эргономике.

The front panel is completely devoid of inscriptions and logos, only a circle of a slot of a selfie camera breaks the idyll of minimalism. Here it is very small, less than 3 mm in diameter. 

Несмотря на стекло на спинке, устройство не назвать скользким. Препятствуют выскальзыванию телефона из рук металлическая рамка и плотная заводская плёнка. Плёнка средней прочности, призвана послужить до покупки стекла или другой плёнки, если владелец придерживается такой концепции использования. 

After removing the screen protector, a decent oleophobic coating is found under it – let’s write it down in positive moments.

On the back panel, a medium-thick camera block stands out, visually it simultaneously resembles Redmi Note 10 and Mi 11. Between the large lenses of the main camera and the telemacro lens there is a wide-angle sensor and a system of three microphones that allows you to record video with sound approaching. 

Кстати, пыль с большим удовольствием собирается вокруг блока камер, особенно если носить смартфон без чехла.

По разъёмам в Poco F3 всё аскетично: порт Type-C и слот на две Nano-SIM на нижнем торце. Разъёма 3.5 мм здесь нет. Есть вероятность, что он пал в угоду наличия в смартфоне уровня защиты от внешних воздействий по стандарту IP53. При извлечении лотка мы видим защиту разъема от попадания внутрь жидкости, а также отсутствие слота для карты памяти. 

But there are powerful stereo speakers with slots at the bottom and top ends. Above, in one of the holes, there is a hit infrared port for controlling household appliances. They also left NFC, which is good news.

There are two control buttons in the smartphone – a fingerprint scanner and a dual volume key, both on the right edge. The scanner is located at a comfortable height, it works clearly and quickly, you can assign triggering both by touch and by pressing. Not new, but useful functionality. The vibration motor works nicely, you can adjust its behavior in response to certain actions.

Screen

В Poco F3 установлена качественная Super AMOLED панель производства Samsung, причём это последнее поколение, обозначаемое индексом E4. Аналогичные матрицы используются в более дорогих флагманских смартфонах. Например, в Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, только там она имеет скруглённые грани. 

Everything from 100% DCI-P3 color gamut to true deep blacks to 1300 nits of peak brightness is great in this display. Well, and where without a 120 Hz screen refresh rate, this option is also in place. All this splendor is complemented by the polling rate of the sensor layer as much as 360 Hz. With such a screen in games it doesn’t “put” anything, commands are read instantly and correctly. 

The cherry on top is MEMC, which compensates for the lack of frames in low frame rate content and makes it smoother. The option is disabled, as is the improvement of the dynamic range of the video.

The display in the smartphone is very pleasing: it is bright, colorful, fast, with good viewing angles. There are many settings available for it, from hiding the notch and dynamic screensaver a la Always On to color temperature correction, including automatic. 

Of course, the battery pays for the top performance of the display, so do not forget to keep an eye on the charge. Interestingly, there are only 120 and 60 Hz in the refresh rate settings, there is no intermediate step of 90 Hz. 

Cameras and interface

На бумаге набор камер в Poco F3 явно не блещет цифрами и флагманскими характеристиками. По всей видимости, ставка сделана на софтовые возможности и искусственный интеллект процессора. 

Основная камера делает кадры с разрешением 12 мегапикселей (4-в-1), если, конечно, не включить режим полного разрешения. Качество снимков разнится в зависимости от освещения. В ясный солнечный день практически не к чему придраться: быстрая съёмка, не пережатые цвета, даже автоматический HDR и AI-режим не шалят и не перевирают картинку. 

The smartphone generally draws out plots in cloudy weather or insufficient lighting, but in some places light noise and floating detail are visible, while night photos are successful, the updated night mode works. 

For those who are not averse to taking pictures with a macro camera, a more adequate (in comparison with colleagues in the market) 5-megapixel module with a focal length of 50 mm and focusing from a distance of 4-5 centimeters is installed here. The ultra-wide-angle camera has received a resolution of 8 megapixels, it works stably and practically does not distort the perspective. 

Portrait shooting on a four, the background is not always washed out correctly, this is also true for the front camera. There are tons of filters and modes for creative people for both photos and videos.

Качество снимков на селфи-модуль для своего ценового сегмента выше среднего. При должном умении и калибровке рук можно получить классные кадры для соцсетей или просто обмена с друзьями в мессенджере.

The smartphone does not pretend to be the laurels of the photo flagship, but it also does not weave in a wagon train, with minimal effort you can take good pictures. The overall impression of the camera is positive, for the money the set of features is not bad. You can find fault with the lack of optical stabilization and a telephoto lens.

As for the system interface, here we are greeted by the same MIUI 12 for POCO, which received an update to Android 11. The system has a dozen preinstalled third-party utilities out of the box, many Google services and proprietary applications from the manufacturer. Advertising is getting less and less, and it is gratifying.

The abundance of settings allows you to flexibly customize the behavior of the system to suit your preferences for control, appearance and features of the interface. The position “turned on, quickly set up and work” is also appropriate, because the overwhelming majority of utilities for work are already in place. Of the 256 GB of permanent memory, 225 GB is available to the user. 

Performance and autonomy 

The mysterious Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor is an overclocked version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+, so you don’t have to worry that some game won’t play, something will freeze or crash. The processor supports Wi-Fi 6, a fair 120Hz for compatible games, and is geared towards potential 5G use. 

Сочетание 6 или 8 ГБ оперативной памяти LPDDR5 с быстрой памятью UFS 3.1 и вовсе делает Poco F3 молниеносным даже в самых «тяжелых» играх. Помогут в них уже упомянутые стереодинамики с сертификацией Dolby Atmos и яркий экран с высокой скоростью обработки команд. Одно удовольствие для мобильного гейминга.  

With such characteristics, any lags are excluded, everything is as smooth as possible. Poco F3 knocks out an average of about 680 points in AnTuTu. For those who like synthetic tests, here are some screenshots with the results. Games “fly” at high graphics settings, there is no question of any lags in the gameplay. 

Cooling also copes, but in one of the stress tests, at the end of a half-hour run, the system displayed a warning about overheating on the screen, while the smartphone was lying on the couch. In terms of throttling, everything is ambiguous, the test sample may belong to a pre-sale batch with flaws in the software, so you should wait for the official samples. 

В контексте таких мощностей в столь тонком корпусе невольно начинают посещать мысли о том, что аккумулятора на 4520 мАч маловато, и в этом есть доля правды. Режим с частотой обновления 120 Гц при высокой яркости позволит выжать из смартфона до полутора суток активного использования без гейминга, только с мессенджерами, почтой и звонками.

В играх Poco F3 проработает 9-10 часов, комплектная зарядка на 33 Вт позволит восполнить 100% заряда чуть больше, чем за 50 минут. Результат средний по рынку.

Impressions

Yes, the Poco F3 cannot be called a full-fledged flagship, but it will definitely find its fans. They will be those users who need cool performance, and cameras are perceived as something secondary and are not the most popular scenario. 

The smartphone is pleasant in terms of tactile sensations and appearance. The glossy back slightly spoils the impressions, after all, one could learn from the experience, for example, from the Mi 10T. One of the colors has a rather nice frosted glass. Its design is quite versatile and austere, and for those who like to stand out, there is also a brighter blue version.

Apart from the yet unannounced cost of a smartphone in Russia, one can only give a cautious estimate, but judging by the prices at the start of sales, Poco is determined and ready to offer aggressive prices. The smartphone cannot be called ideal, but it also has plenty of advantages – one screen is worth it. 

Even despite the fact that the smartphone is not something original and created specifically within the Poco series, it looks confident against the background of possible competitors, being slightly inferior, perhaps, only in cameras. It remains to wait for the Russian presentation, which will put everything in its place.
