England player ratings vs Hungary: Jack Grealish most effective while Harry Kane is out of sorts

Jordan Pickford

Sent the wrong way for Roland Sallai’s penalty but was not tested regularly from open play on his return to the starting line-up after getting rested against Andorra. 6/10

Kyle Walker

Pinned back more than he would have wanted due to Hungary’s formation and the visitors’ work-rate off the ball. Unusually caught on the ball second half but not punished. 5/10

John Stones

Escaped his marker and tapped in for the equaliser and seemed to grow in confidence with the goal. Good range of passing and defended well. Picked up knock on wrist. 7/10

Tyrone Mings

Presence in the opposition area helped set up Stones. Did well clearing the ball with his head when longer balls came England’s way. 6/10

Luke Shaw

Harshly conceded a penalty for a high foot on Nego, which he knew little about. Ran forward with the ball and supported Grealish well. 6/10

Phil Foden

Dangerous set-piece delivery for Stones’ equaliser and also with his corners. Looking comfortable in his No8 role on his return to the England team. 7/10

Declan Rice

Guilty of poor passing in the first half and possibly needed more help to control the middle of the pitch. Combative against tough opponents. 6/10

Mason Mount

Played a little deeper as a central midfielder but moved forward to support his attacking team-mates and kept the ball moving. 6/10

Raheem Sterling

Header saved at far post in the first half and kept running at the Hungarians despite getting double-teamed. Sent through and had one-on-one saved. 6/10

Harry Kane

Out of sorts. Dropped deep to get on the ball but nothing came off for him in the area and he picked up kicks on his ankle. 5/10

Jack Grealish

England’s most effective player but taken off after an hour despite exciting runs and drawing fouls including one for the equaliser. Looked unhappy on bench. 7/10
