Residents stuck inside a burning apartment in Istanbul were caught by crowds of locals after jumping out of a window.

Footage showed people in the street below stretching out a sheet in an attempt to safely catch people jumping from the building in the Esenler district of Istanbul, Turkey. 

Several people leapt out of the window in a bid to save themselves from the fire, including a young girl. 

Two of those who jumped were injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

Locals could also be seen tackling the blaze with fire extinguishers as they waited for emergency services to arrive. 

The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed.
