Belarus ‘arming migrants with stun grenades’ amid worst clashes so far with Polish border guards

“Aggressive migrants are throwing stones at our soldiers and police officers,” the Polish defence ministry said in a statement. “Our security services are repelling the attack,” it continued, adding that tear gas had been used to “quell the aggression”.

Polish police said an officer was seriously injured with a likely skull fracture during the clashes.

“Unfortunately, as a result of an attack by people inspired by the Belarusian side, a police officer has been seriously injured,” the police said in a tweet.

The violence came as Marcin Przydacz, a deputy Polish foreign minister, warned that if the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border escalates, the government has “not ruled out” closing more border crossings with Belarus.

At the moment just the crossing at Kuznica has been closed. But further closures could lead to serious disruption not only to Belarusian trade but also that of Russia, which uses Belarus as a transit country to western European markets.
