Eight of the finest country house stays for a great British minibreak

It has been almost 75 years since Francis Coulson bought a small Victorian manor on the shore of Ullswater and converted it into what is now widely considered to be Britain’s first country house hotel. Sharrow Bay set a new standard for rural hospitality, and although it sadly closed in September 2020, its legacy is there for all to see – and, indeed, to enjoy.

For it is certain that the appeal of a country house stay has only grown in recent years. Private stately homes continue to open their doors to paying guests each and every year, while a generation of new owners have ensured that their properties sit at the cutting edge of British interior design, at the same time pushing the envelope when it comes to curating the ultimate luxury experience. That’s not to say the traditional, Downton-esque mansion is dead – there are plenty of those too.

Whatever your preference, there is surely something to suit your next indulgent escape to a country estate. Here are eight of our favourites to get you started.

De Vere Beaumont Estate

Windsor, Berkshire

Best for: Escaping the hustle and bustle

Set in 40 acres of parkland, this Georgian mansion provides the perfect base while exploring the Royal Borough of Windsor. Having recently undergone a multi-million refurbishment, the rooms are impressive, a mix of country chic and classic contemporary overlooking the splendid grounds. While the imposing white property is big and majestic, it still doesn’t lose any of its charm or intimacy. The new 1705 restaurant offers a mixture of British and Italian classics with a winning children’s menu that comes with crayons and paper while you wait. A winner. This really feels like a hotel for everyone – including dog owners whose pets are made a fuss of.

Stella loves: The vast grounds that feel so peaceful with lots of places to sit and enjoy a quiet coffee.

Out and about: It’s just three miles from the centre of historic Windsor, where there is plenty to do from visiting Her Majesty at home in the Castle to strolling around the many shops.

Many guests at the hotel were visiting Legoland, just a few miles away and offering the perfect family day out, while Great Windsor Park sits on the hotel’s doorstep.

Rooms from £139 a night; call 0175 364 0000 or visit devere.co.uk/beaumont-estate
