At Wednesday night’s mother2mothers 20th anniversary Gala at Outernet London, Sienna Miller, 39, stunned onlookers with a freshly chopped ‘Tob’ otherwise known as the tousled bob, winter’s ‘it’ haircut.  

The man behind Sienna’s shaggy bob is none other than George Northwood, the hairstylist responsible for creating longtime client Alexa Chung’s French girl choppy style that is still his most asked for haircut to this day.

Arguably the most popular hairstyle of all time, the bob is as timeless as it gets – and looks as good on women in their 80s as it does on a 20-something. But don’t let its humble roots fool you. This winter, says Northwood, it’s all about the statement bob with some gentle layering for a sexy, lived in feel. 

“Sienna already came to me with an blunt bob. We wanted to create a more shaggy rock n’ roll style for Wednesday night’s event so I cut off the corners at the front to give it a more layered, shaggy vibe and blended her fringe into the sides of her hair. These small tweaks change the whole look from classic to fresh and new.”

As for length, Northwood says winter is the time to go as short as you can get away with. “It’s not about the long bob this season, my clients are craving a new start and asking for proper haircuts that stand out.” 

Northwood says a short statement bob pairs beautifully with high roll neck jumpers, a high collar and statement necklines and accessories. “This textured bob is of itself your best accessory – you can put on a simple dress and the haircut becomes your statement piece.”
