Jennifer Lopez is no stranger to new beauty trends, and it seems every week she – or rather, her glam squad – tweaks her hair and make-up. On Friday her hairdresser Chris Appleton revealed a new hair colour for Lopez, a departure from her usual honeyed brunette balayage: a bold bubblegum pink hair colour. In fact, searches for pink hair are up 80 percent in a month according to Google, so she’s not alone in wanting a brightening pastel shade for the winter months.
Lopez is by no means the first celebrity to dye her hair pink. It is actually extremely flattering in your 40s, 50s and beyond. The likes of Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett and Madonna, who have all dyed their hair pink in recent years, show just how complexion-lifting a pastel or bright pink shade can be.
The colourist Josh Wood, who has a Colour Glaze in his collection called Pink Quartz, told the Telegraph, ‘I hate hair colour that’s ageist. So many of my clients coloured their teenager’s hair pink during lockdown, and there seems to be a narrative that pastels are only a youth trend. I look at pastels differently in a more sophisticated way, less throw away.’
For Wood, who created a palette of pastel tones for Marc Jacobs SS19 catwalk show, thinks that ‘pastels really add to one’s skin tone. There are grown up pastels that condition whilst they are adding tone. In my opinion there is a pastel to suit everyone.’ At £19, Wood’s Colour Glaze is also available in cherry, blue and peach, but it’s his pink glaze that has been a bestseller since launching in June this year.
Adds celebrity hair colourist Sophia Hilton, ‘pink is always a favourite for the over 40s because, as we age, we lose colour from our skin and we need warmer tones to compliment and brighten our skin up. Often we can find blues and violets quite draining on the wrong skin tone. If you want to play it safe but get out of your comfort zone all at the same time, choose pink.’
Hilton’s favourite way to colour blonde hair pink is by using Crazy Color’s Semi Permanent Shade, Pinkisimo, squirted into your normal conditioner over blonde hair. ‘I’ve even done this myself and changed up my regular shade and it’s made me feel so much better. In the winter months we might need something to lift our spirits,’ she adds.
The cut that you wear pink hair on also counts. Chris Appleton, Lopez’s hairdresser and global creative director of the haircare brand Color Wow, told the Telegraph that he’s predicting more layers in haircuts – as seen in Lopez’s hair. ‘Face-framing pieces and layers throughout will give your hair all the volume, bounce, and oomph.’ He uses the Color Wow XTRA Large Bombshell Volumizer for big, movable volume.
‘Curtain bangs are also here to stay, with shorter lengths in the middle and longer on the sides,’ he adds. ‘It’s such a versatile and easy to wear look that works with a range of styles, from messy waves to sleek blowouts and high ponytails.’
