He was also allegedly involved in directing money from the Mahfouz Foundation to the now defunct Children and the Arts Foundation, of which the Prince of Wales was previously patron.
The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator is now examining the charity’s report and is “carefully considering” its own inquiry.
Scotland Yard confirmed that officers had “liaised with the Prince’s Foundation regarding the findings of its independent investigation”.
In a radio interview on Friday, Dame Cressida Dick, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said they had been “making some initial inquiries” but had not launched an investigation. She said they would consider further evidence if it becomes available.
Peter Hunt, a royal commentator, said that whether the Duke had expressed his concerns about Mr Mahfouz to his father was one of the many questions the Metropolitan Police could ask father and son “if they choose to investigate”.
Star-studded line-up for Christmas carol event
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be joined by other members of the Royal family at a Christmas carol concert featuring performances by singers Ellie Goulding and Leona Lewis, at Westminster Abbey.
The Together At Christmas event, hosted by the Duchess, will be broadcast on ITV on Christmas Eve, and will include readings by Prince William and Kate Garraway.
