Sony has revealed its second electric car at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and confirmed that it intends to get into the transportation business with a new mobility division.
The Vision-S 02 is a pure electric SUV, a sister car to the Vision-S large saloon launched at the same show in 2020. The Vision-S 02 SUV has seven seats and a high-riding stance, but is understood to be based on the same battery electric 4×4 underpinnings as the saloon. That means it is likely to share the same twin 200kW motor technology and have a similar 0-62mph acceleration in less than five seconds with a top speed of more than 112mph. There’s no word about the size and type of the battery pack, or the range.
Like the Vision-S saloon, the SUV’s interior is filled with high technology 5G communications and the latest in sensors, which recognise the surrounding environment and provide customisable entertainment and vehicle noise. It has a similar layout to that of the Vision-S saloon, with a full-width digital display facia and screens in the headrests for the second and third row of seats.
In 2020, Sony said the Vision-S (which was engineered and built by Austrian-based specialist Magna Steyr) would be a test bed for its autonomous driving sensor technology and in the last two years the saloon has been tested on public roads in Japan and Germany.
