Newbie investors beating midlifers at their own game

Younger investors have beaten older counterparts since the start of the pandemic, taking advantage of the excellent returns offered by investment trusts.

Savers under the age of 24 have been the best performing age group since the beginning of 2020, according to the stockbroker Interactive Investor’s performance index. The platform’s youngest users returned 23pc over the past two years, compared with a 12pc gain for investors aged over 65.

Interactive Investor attributed their youngest customers’ success to owning more in investment trusts, which made up just over a third of their portfolios compared with an average of 23pc. Trusts tend to perform better than normal funds in rising markets because fund managers can borrow money and invest more than the size of their portfolio to amplify returns.
