‘Help me find a blazer that will make me look sophisicated’

It’s time to rediscover your fashion confidence and dip your toe back into something braver. In our Wardrobe Whisperer column, our team will find a solution for every style crisis.

Dear Wardrobe Whisperer,

I want to buy a classic blazer that I can wear to work or over jeans, that will look chic rather than stuffy and that won’t date quickly. I am 5ft 10in and quite narrow on my top half.

I don’t really want black as I find it very draining. I’d like to spend no more than £300. Any suggestions?

Dear Nastasha,

Excellent decision, Natasha. I think if I had to strip my wardrobe back to one outfit to wear all the time, it would be some kind of blazer and jeans combination – timeless, elegant and effortless, it’s a fail-safe formula.

But finding the perfect blazer is never easy, and there are thousands of options out there. You’re right to steer clear of black.

While I love the tuxedo look for evening, by day, a black jacket can look too corporate and, unless you have the energy to style it up all the time, can look boring.

If you’re going neutral, then, I’d opt for navy. Much softer on the complexion and easier to make work in a casual context. One of the best versions I’ve found is a real bargain – £39.50 from M&S, below.
