What’s not to adore about tie-dye? You choose your favourite colour and it hands it back to you with options galore. Take the cardigan I’m wearing here. I love mauve, but even I concede that in one unbroken slab it’s likely to cause nauseous reactions.

Tie-dye takes the potentially staid and steers it away from the precipice of frump. I’m not saying cardies are frumpy but, well, the humble little round-neck has had a hard time lately, shoved into the wings by the far cooler-sounding Boyfriend Cardigan.

I get it. As a marketing term, ‘boyfriend’ is perfection. You can pop it in front of almost anything – a baggy woollen sack, a blazer that came out all wrong because the factory misread the measurements – and you’ve got yourself a guaranteed hit. Maybe we should all co-opt it and see if it doesn’t make bunions, flab and spots sound like the ultimate Gen-Z must-haves.

But frankly, enough with the oversized. As evidence, I give you the Balenciaga suit Justin Bieber wore to the Grammys recently. Unfortunately, no one thought to explain to the hapless Bieber that some concepts are not meant to exist beyond the tightly policed boundaries of a catwalk show. Huge doesn’t begin to describe how large it was in comparison to the singer. Imagine a suit made for an elephant. Then picture it on a chihuahua.
