Review of the budget e-reader Digma M2 with E-ink HD display

Increasingly, I meet people who read books with enthusiasm, but many, in the old fashioned way, carry a paper version with them or view it from their phone. Of course, this is unusual and easier for some, but inconvenient. The Digma M2 e-book is built on an E-ink HD display, which already implies good display quality during long-term operation from a full battery charge. An e-book has a number of advantages over other representatives and is quite omnivorous in terms of reproducible formats. And in addition, the manufacturer additionally equipped the book with a convenient cover.

Specifications
  • screen – E-ink HD (16 grayscale), 6 “with a resolution of 1024×758, built-in backlight;
  • processor – 600 MHz;
  • RAM / built-in memory – 128 MB / 4 GB, expandable with memory cards up to 32 GB micro SDHC;
  • support for graphic / text formats – JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF / PDF, EPUB, TXT, HTML, FB2, RTF, MOBI, CHM, PDB, DOC;
  • connection interfaces – micro USB with the ability to charge the built-in battery;
  • battery – 1500 mAh Li-Pol;
  • housing – dark gray plastic;
  • dimensions – 116*164*9.8 mm;
  • weight – 150 g.

On the branded packaging, you can see the image of the gadget and the key points made by the manufacturer on the front side. Of all the above, we can distinguish: 6 inch E-ink with a resolution of 1024 * 758 dots, built-in backlight and cover. Full technical specifications can be seen on the back, here is information about the manufacturer. Inside, all elements are in individual packages and are additionally protected from external influences by soft foam material.

The package is standard and includes a book, power cable and instructions / warranty card. The wire uses the still old but still unforgotten micro USB connector. There are no large currents when charging, and a 1500 mAh battery is charged in 5-7 hours. I tried to connect the e-book to the laptop with another cable and it didn’t work for me, but maybe there were some problems with the cable. Since charging through it goes. With a “native” wire, the connection is almost instantaneous and 2 physical disks are displayed on the computer, unless, of course, a memory card is installed.

The paper manual reveals in detail the basics of managing the book and connecting to a computer to receive new files.

Appearance

The Digma M2 e-reader has a protective leatherette case. This nice addition is quite rare in the standard package, and buying an additional case is not a budgetary matter. Therefore, this is immediately a plus for long-term operation. The cover covers the book from the front and back, but there is no fixation for snapping.

On the bottom side are the connection interfaces and the power button. Here you can also see the LED indicator illuminated at the moment of connection to external power and the hole of the Reset button.

The power button sharpens quite a bit from the case, and when I put the book on the bottom edge, I turned it off a couple of times. I think that this is a manufacturer’s defect and I hope this will be resolved in future versions.

Quite a few buttons are allocated for control, and at first you even get confused, but later you realize that most of them duplicate each other’s execution. This is especially true of the paging buttons located on both sides of the screen. I think it will be convenient to operate with one hand for both left-handers and right-handers. Most of the buttons are made in the form of a rocker and are marked with pictograms on the body. There are quite large bezels around the screen, which does not interfere with reading.

Control and menu

Each key is programmed to perform one action, so you quickly understand the controls and there are no questions.

Buttons are located under the screen: home, menu, enter or OK, back, forced update (it also starts the backlight with a long hold). Around the OK button is a navigation ring: up, down, left and right. Again, duplicating some controls.

After turning on the book, 8 menu items are available to us, which can be navigated with the page turning buttons, or with a round ring around the OK button. The choice is hers. We have available:

  • browsing history – the last viewed books, when selected, it opens on the page on which the reading is completed;
  • library – all text files recognized by the e-book and available for reading are displayed;
  • book search – used to search for a book of interest among a huge number. Moreover, the search can be carried out both by name and by text;
  • explorer – displaying all files available for viewing (graphic, text, archive). After running the archive file, it is unpacked and becomes readable;
  • image – view graphic files;
  • games – 2 primitive logic games are available, but when there is nothing to do, you can play;
  • calendar;
  • settings – directly to the book itself: brightness, date and time, and much more.

The first thing I suggest looking at is the settings. In them we will find screen settings, updates, changing the date and time, resetting to factory settings, viewing information about the device and much more.

The library contains downloaded book files, and only supported formats are displayed. Names in Cyrillic are supported without apparent problems. On the right side you can see the file format and percentage read. The selected book opens with a slight delay and it all depends on the size. But I think you can wait a bit to enjoy your favorite work.

View images in 16 grayscale. It is clear that it is not very convenient to look at vacation photos, but since the idea is realized, then why not.

There are only two games: boxes and mosaic.

I already wrote above that the book allows you to read packed files, but they are available only through the explorer, and unpacking takes place before launching.

After starting the book, the change menu is available:

  • font size;
  • style;
  • screen orientation;
  • text colors and more.

The backlight is quite bright and uniform, but adjustable.

findings

The Digma M2 e-book is a handy reading gadget. Small size combined with a high-quality screen and built-in backlight will allow you to keep reading. 4 GB of internal memory will allow you to download an entire library and use it with the whole family, and if this is not enough for you, then you can always increase the storage capacity by installing a memory card. It’s nice that the book comes with a case right away, because it’s convenient and protects the screen and controls from accidental damage. In the 2 weeks that I have been using the book, I have not been able to discharge it, although in the evenings I used it with a backlight.

Perhaps I would like to automatically turn on the backlight at night to read before going to bed, but in this case it turns on quite simply, so this functionality is not particularly required.

And it would be nice if there was a protective film on the screen, because after removing the shipping screen, it remains without protection.
