Ukrainian lawyers and leading legal associations appealed to the world community to stop the genocide against the Ukrainian people.
Key points expressed in the appeal:
Most of the evidence that has already been documented and verified by independent observers can be seen as evidence of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by Russia
The criteria by which we draw these conclusions are spelled out in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention).
Article II of the Genocide Convention includes acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such:
-
killing members of the group;
-
causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
-
deliberate creation for a group of living conditions designed for complete or partial physical destruction;
-
the introduction of measures aimed at preventing births within the group;
-
forced transfer of children from a group to another group.
Part of the facts, including as of April 4, 2022, are the following (but there are many more that have yet to be registered and reported):
-
Deliberate killing of civilians, torture and mass rape.
-
The ongoing unprecedented campaign of deliberate shelling by Russia
-
Russia’s denial of humanitarian aid to those in need.
-
Mass deportations of the civilian population of Ukraine from the occupied territories.
And special attention is paid to the specific intention of Russian criminals to commit the genocide of Ukrainians through the complete or partial destruction of Ukrainians as a national group. This is confirmed by the following facts:
-
objection of the President of the Russian Federation to the right of Ukraine to exist as a sovereign state;
-
targeting civilians;
-
the use of indiscriminate weapons;
-
the use of mobile crematoria and mass graves to hide the true number of Ukrainian civilians killed by the Russians;
-
deliberate indiscriminate attacks on Ukrainian cultural heritage;
-
persecution of Ukrainian activists, journalists, politicians and other ardent patriots with the help of so-called “kill lists” and the use of mercenaries and assassins.
