In Ukraine, illegal riding a moped or scooter can lead to an insane fine: what is known

The monetary penalty for driving this type of transport without the appropriate category can result in an incredible amount.

Due to rising prices and fuel shortages, many have switched to more economical transport. In particular, these are mopeds, scooters, electric bicycles, etc.

However, due to the peculiarities of the current Ukrainian legislation, the use of a moped can be expensive for the driver, reports the Road Advocate. Instead of saving, the driver may receive large fines and be left without a vehicle.

In particular, in Ukraine, for driving a moped, it is envisaged to obtain a special driving category “A1”. With category “B” or even with category “A” it is forbidden to drive a moped. So, in accordance with Part 2 of Article 126 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, driving a vehicle by a person who does not have the right to drive such a vehicle provides for a fine of UAH 3,400.

At the same time, according to part 5 of article 126 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, repeated driving of a vehicle during the year by a person who does not have the right to drive such a vehicle provides for a fine in the amount of UAH 40,800 with deprivation of the right to drive a vehicle for a period of five to seven years and with paid withdrawal of the vehicle or without it.

That is, if the moped driver is stopped again within a year if he does not have category A1, then it will cost him 40,800 UAH with simultaneous deprivation of driving rights for a period of 5 to 7 years. In this case, the moped itself can be seized.

Often the amount of the fine for driving a moped without a driver’s license is several times higher than the cost of the moped itself. Therefore, riding a moped without a special category is very expensive.
