The filter is perhaps the main innovation of the purifier. The new filter is HEPA and the previous generation filter is EPA. EPA filters are less effective than HEPA filters. The latter retain 99.97% of small particles up to 3 microns, and EPA removes from 85% to 99.5%. But there is good news too. Owners of the second generation of the purifier can simply buy a new HEPA filter for it and upgrade the device.
The filter is a consumable item. The service life is from six months to a year, according to Xiaomi itself. But in my clean apartment, the filter still set a service life of 145 days. After the expiration date, in theory, the device will stop turning on until it is replaced. The filter price must be up to 3 rubles.
Let’s summarize a little so that there are no misunderstandings. A HEPA filter will not keep you dust-free in your home. And it will not become cleaner, although, of course, it will suck in some kind of dust. The HEPA filter removes allergens, small harmful particles of smog, pollen from the air. HEPA filters are used all over the world. For example, they are used in the nuclear industry to trap radioactive particles.
HEPA filters are not designed to remove odors. They remove particles. However, some particles in the air can have an unpleasant odor. For example, mold or particles that enter the air when smoking a cigarette. That is, removing odors is a side benefit.
Mi Home app
As with all smart appliances from Xiaomi, it is better to install the Mi Home app for the full-fledged purifier to work. In general, the application interface is laconic and fits into 2 screens. The current air quality is shown, you can select the operating mode and the intensity of air extraction from the room. You can set a timer for when the device is turned on / off. Useful information in the appendix indicates the filter life. However, even if you do not use the application, the device will monitor itself, and when the filter needs replacement, it will stop turning on.
The Mi Home app will be most useful if you have other Xiaomi smart appliances as well, as scenarios can be created. For example, if the robot vacuum cleaner starts cleaning, then turn on the cleaner to catch the dust that the robot will raise into the air. I don’t like the implementation of this particular example, since Xiaomi was too lazy to give the user freedom of action. I can only turn on the cleaner, but I cannot set the operating mode. For example, so that it immediately works at maximum power. Auto mode only. In this mode, if the cleaner sees that there is a lot of dust in the air, then it will start to work more intensively. But I would like, of course, more freedom of action.
However, the filter can also be controlled from the OLED screen. There is an auto mode, there is a custom mode, there are 3 levels of traction power. At the highest level, the operating volume is 65 dB. In automatic mode, the purifier runs silently.
Impressions of use
Unfortunately, I do not have pets, I also live on the upper floors, so when I turned on the purifier showed that my air purity level is 1 unit (the less the better), the temperature is 26 degrees, and the humidity is 50%. I don’t have an air quality meter, but the temperature and humidity matched my room electronic barometer. While changing the bed linen, he was actively shaking the sheets. The indicator rose to 0.04 units. During the operation of the vacuum cleaner, it jumped to 0.08 – 0.10. But I was so lucky. The previous generation was tested by Artem Lutfullin in 2016. As he writes, initially the indicator was 30-40 units, the device helped to reduce it to 10-15 units.
After walking around an ecologically clean apartment, I decided to give the cleaner a test and took it with me to the kitchen when I was about to fry a dirty steak. A dirty steak is when butter and then meat on a hot speed. So, my idea was successful. The air quality index began to fall before our eyes, soon reaching a maximum value of 600 units. As I understand it, such a high figure was due to the fact that particles of hot oil, water and blood got into the air. By the way, if the steak was cooked correctly, then the air quality indicator did not rise above 100 units.
The filter took less than half an hour to return peace and grace to the kitchen at maximum power, and also almost completely remove the smell of food.
