It is worth giving credit that Motorola is kinder than Meizu, to which I have already dedicated a separate article full of ill will. Read it! She hangs side by side.
But Motorola has pissed off too! Sitting within four walls, not only without travel, but even without walking down the street, you begin to appreciate rare online events and look forward to them. I prepared in advance, launched a page on the link. Some earth was drawn there and the countdown was going on, then a window appeared in the form of a new smartphone (wow!), And there a dude in a hat said that times are difficult, you have to take courage and now we will show you the phone (yes!). And then a 30-second video sequence and that’s it!
Didn’t even have time to pour tea from the teapot. It was sad. And then I saw that new videos appeared on the page. And now I can say that Motorola’s presentation in terms of the time / information content / clarity ratio is perhaps the best over the past couple of years.
Why Motorola Edge + is important?
If you look at the Motorola lineup of recent years, you will easily notice that there are no flagships. All smartphones came out on mid-range chipsets, mainly of the 600 line. Motorola Moto Z4 – Snapdragon 675, Motorola One – Snapdragon 625.
The last flagship chipset was, if I’m not mistaken, in 2016, when the Motorola Moto Z Force came out on Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. Thus, it turns out that for 4 years Motorola did not have a real flagship that would personify the company’s achievements in the field of smartphone construction.
Not making flagships is a rather difficult decision. Despite the fact that all over the world people mostly buy devices of the “middle” and “economy” segments, the manufacturer is still judged by its top-end smartphones. Flagships get the most fame, videos, articles and discussions. At the same time, for the manufacturer, the flagship usually always gives the greatest costs in terms of effort, time and money. Everything should be at the highest level in technique (effort and time), there should be a good advertising campaign (money costs!), And the profit from flagships is usually minimal. This is Apple’s margin with the iPhone 22%, and Samsung raises another 8 percent. The rest of the manufacturers receive 3-5% from each smartphone. And if the advertising campaign is active, then they can sell negatively.
Probably because of all the problems accompanying the flagships, Motorola decided to take a break, starting to make smartphones of the middle segment, strengthening the foundation of people’s love. And if we talk about the US market, the company was doing pretty well. Motorola cooked up high-quality devices on almost pure Android with minimal modifications that made smartphones much more convenient to use.
And according to СounterPointResearch data, it has gone from 2% at the beginning of 2017 to 8% now. And now the company seems to have decided that it is possible to try and experiment. First, a conceptual Motorola Razr with a flexible screen was presented, and now a full-fledged flagship in the usual form factor.

The heart of the new smartphone is the flagship Snapdragon 865, which supports 5G. At the same time, Motorola promises that the smartphone will be able to work in the 5G millimeter range, which will allow download speeds up to 4 GB / s. Also, the smartphone will support Wi-Fi 6.
Motorola did not save on memory either. The smartphone has 12 GB of RAM of the latest generation LPDDR5, and a 256 GB drive of the UFC 3.0 standard.
Motorola has also carefully worked on the sound. The smartphone has two stereo speakers at the ends. And the company promises that the motorola edge + will be the loudest smartphone ever, and its volume is 60% higher (than the hospital average). If you look at the current sound volume of smartphones at the level of 80-90 dB, it turns out that the motorola edge + will produce about 140 dB. Thus, a smartphone may well replace a portable speaker. Along the way, the company noted that they hired a third-party music studio of high professionals (Waves company, which received the GRAMMY technical award) to work on the sound, so they tuned the sound there as it should be.
I am also glad that Motorola decided not to abandon the 3.5 mm jack. It was placed on the top of the smartphone.
Screen
Motorola promises that this screen is recognizable even from afar. And it’s easy to believe. It is a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with 90-degree curved edges. The company called this screen Endless Edge.
The aspect ratio of the screen is 21 by 9. And Motorola promises that thanks to this it will be comfortable to work with the device with one hand. In passing, I would like to note that the screen seems to have very thin upper and lower bezels.
Other technical characteristics include a refresh rate of 90 Hz. Modern flagships have 120 Hz, but in addition, increased power consumption. And 90 Hz is a reasonable compromise. The screen supports HDR10 +, and it will also have 10-bit color. Thus, a smartphone will be able to display more than a billion colors, while usually screens show only 60 million.

It’s still pretty much pure Android with minimal revisions. Motorola has named their customization My UX. It will allow you to customize and personalize your smartphone as much as possible. So, the company decided to make full use of the curved edges of the screen. With the help of swipes along the edges, you can open notifications, curtain, recent applications. And on a swipe to the center of the screen, a panel with applications will slide out in the same way as it is now with the Samsung Galaxy. Moto experience gestures will continue to be available, from turning on the flashlight with a simple hacking gesture to activating the camera with a twist of your wrist.
Also, the edges will overflow with notifications, calls, and the charging progress will be displayed on them.
Along the way, it can be noted that Motorola offers to use the edges for control in games. For example, triggers are visible here.
Battery
The smartphone battery should be fine. Still, the volume is 5 mAh. The smartphone supports fast charging, wireless charging, and it can also be used to recharge other gadgets either with a wire or by attaching another gadget to the back of the device.
Camera
When creating the camera, Motorola said that it tried to bring the quality of images as close as possible to those given by DSLRs. The main camera is a 108 MP module. One of the highlights of the camera, judging by the promo, is the advanced stabilization when shooting video. We need to test! The smartphone supports 3x optical zoom. Along the way, it is important to note that optical stabilization is also present mainly in the telephoto lens. Accordingly, when shooting with magnification, the pictures will come out sharp. The smartphone also has a ToF 3D sensor and an advanced macro mode.
108 MP works like Xiaomi, that is, it compresses pixels 4 in 1, so frames come out in 27 MP size. But, apparently, the smartphone compresses them additionally for compactness, so the proposed test demo images are 16 MP in size.
By the way, like many new flagships, it is possible to take a frame right during video shooting. It will be 20 MP resolution. The camera will have a lot of highlights. For example, a video portrait function will appear, that is, it will be possible to blur the background when shooting a video. Very good!

The smartphone really turned out to be interesting. There was a desire to hold it in my hands. So far, only one clear drawback is visible: the company did not mention water protection. Motorola smartphones usually come with a splash-proof feature, but that’s not IP68. Other disadvantages are also easily noticeable against the background of Samsung’s flagships, for example. But for the first flagship in 4 years, I think Motorola did very well.
The company did not announce dates and prices.
