The Russian occupation troops, at gunpoint, are taking the residents of the captured city of Popasna , Luhansk region, to Pervomaisk and Stakhanov, which are not controlled by the Government of Ukraine.
Stubborn battles for Popasna continued for two months. In the city, which has been under the control of Russian forces since May 8, not a single surviving house remains.
This was authorized by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova.
“At the time of the Russian occupation, there were 1,500 civilians in the city who did not want to leave Popasna. The invaders are looking for people in shelters and take them at gunpoint to Pervomaisk and Stakhanov, which have been occupied for 8 years,” she said.
According to Denisova, such actions are a violation of Article 49 of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Civilian Population (1949) and Article 85 of Additional Protocol No. 1 to the Geneva Conventions (1977). These documents prohibit any kind of movement of persons from the occupied territory.
“I call on the UN Commission to Investigate Human Rights Violations during the Russian military invasion of Ukraine to take into account these facts of war crimes and human rights violations of the Russian Federation in Ukraine,” she concluded.
