Since the appearance of the first adequately working TWS headphones on the market, my attitude towards them has been quite skeptical. At that time, I used overhead wireless “noise reduction devices” on an ongoing basis and, I confess, was very pleased with them, I still use them on occasion, albeit less often. As the number of people with AirPods in their ears grew around them, curiosity was a natural reaction, but the first impression of using in contrast to the already firmly established model with ANC was completely ruined, trips in transport with such headphones turned into torment for the ears, from music not there was practically nothing left.

So the first generation TWS has clearly passed me by. But times are changing, technologies are developing, and after some time after testing several models from different manufacturers, it came to the understanding that such a form factor may well be useful in their scenarios. Of course, this was during last year’s lockdown, during which I had to work from home, where it is, frankly, hot in full-size headphones. However, the idea of ​​noise canceling is difficult to give up, the habit is strong. In this collection I want to share the experience of using 5 TWS models, which, one way or another, were remembered and useful in work from home. All of them showed themselves in cutting off external sounds, so this parameter can be considered one of the key ones in this collection.

Sudio TOLV

The digest is opened by the most inexpensive of those present, but at the same time quite pleasant-sounding model from the Swedes Sudio. The company has been making headphones and speakers for some time now, with a focus on both good sound and design. The name plays on this very message, S is from Sweden, the rest is from audio. The manufacturer, apparently, is officially entering the Russian market, the more interesting it was for me personally to get acquainted with the headphones using the example of three models at once. Plus, judging by the Urbanears reviews, the Swedes are also good at sound.

Positioning

In the line of headphones, the TOLV model occupies an intermediate position, being an average cost TWS solution in the form factor of lightweight in-ear plugs a la Redmi AirDots and other “colleagues” in the market. The younger TOLV R model has a smaller battery and a slightly simpler look with just two colors

Appearance, ergonomics

In my opinion, the visually strictest version was tested – black with silver accents. Someone will call it boring, here, as they say, a matter of taste. But I didn’t have to choose, and in general, according to subjective feelings, it was quite a good range. It is clear that the combination of black with gold or white with rose gold looks better, there is a choice, and this is good.

When you first look at the Sudio Tolv case, an unexpected accessory catches your eye in the form of a brown rope strap threaded through the holes in the case. It has a sticker with certification information and basic instructions in case the new owner of the headphones forgets to charge them before use. This rope looks original, you can hang it on your finger, if you wish, it can be easily removed. Looking ahead, it is worth noting that this approach is also found in other Sudio models.

The case itself is as austere as possible: the Sudio inscription on the front side, two LEDs, a charging connector at the back and that’s it, no more visual elements. The diodes are active while the headphones are charging, they light up red. Like the headphones themselves, the case is made of plastic with a matte Soft Touch coating, it collects prints quickly and godlessly, but just as quickly it parts with them. The lid of the case is kept closed thanks to a small groove in the case; it is impossible to open it by accident.

Headphones are fixed inside due to magnetic fastening in separate cradles with connectors brought up. Interestingly, they are universal, the left earphone will charge in the cradle on the right and vice versa. The same concept applies to in-ear headphones, for this, when turned on, an alert is heard about which channel a particular headphone is responsible for.

The metal-like pad on each of the headphones is a physical button responsible for controlling playback and working with calls. The concept is easy to remember: one press on any earphone – pause / play, two presses – the next song (right earpiece) or return to the beginning of the current / previous song (left earphone). Pressing the left or right earbud three times, respectively, will decrease or increase the volume level. Finally, when a call arrives on the paired device, a single press on the pad on the right earphone will accept the call, and a long press will reject it.

Using Sudio Tolv as an example, I once again convinced myself of my commitment to the physical buttons for controlling TWS headphones. Regardless of the presence of gloves on my hands, such controls are personally more convenient to me than touch pads with various gestures. There are no questions about the fit of the headphones, it is reliable, the correct selection of nozzles in size will only help in this. In the process of using the model did not cause any negative sensations, the ears do not hurt, nothing rubs.

Sound quality

Frankly, at first, for some reason, I was skeptical about the sound, but in fact everything turned out to be quite pleasant. The in-channel arrangement gives accentuated low frequencies, although there are not as many of them as we would like. Highs behave prudently, except that sometimes a little poured in some compositions during a test run at high volume. Level of detail, there are no complaints about the readability of instruments and voice. I liked the clarity of the sound, the comparison with a cheaper model from another manufacturer affected. The manufacturer does not provide information on the size of the graphene driver used in Sudio Tolv.

Passive noise cancellation at home works perfectly well, on the street and in transport, external sounds become partially audible and vibration spoils the listening experience a little, especially in the subway. In this case, it is enough to increase the volume by one or two values ​​to make up for the loss in detail. The conclusion on the sound is as follows: a high-quality and three-dimensional picture, frequencies are in place, but without any fantastic results, worthy for everyday listening, better, of course, at home or on the street away from traffic.

Working hours

For Sudio Tolv, the manufacturer claims 7 hours of operation from a single charge, similar results were obtained during testing at a volume level of 50%. A fully charged case will charge the headphones 4 more times for a total of 35 hours of playtime. The use of MicroUSB is, of course, discouraging, I would like to see Type-C.

General impressions

The model for its money is pleasant, of course, not without compromises. Sudio TOLV lacks water protection and support for advanced codecs, while I liked the overall sound picture, except for a little more bass. Otherwise, they are fairly honest working headphones with good ergonomics.

Skullcandy Indy Evo

Not the newest model for the market, but it was offered for testing relatively recently. The brand is familiar to many fans of extreme sports, they are the target audience of the company’s products: active people who prefer to spend time outdoors, on a ski slope or in a skate park. The Indy Evo is mid-range in the TWS lineup, attracting attention with its many colors and sound features for the money.

Appearance, ergonomics

From the standpoint of the exterior, the Skullcandy Indy Evo looks more cheerful than the previous model. First of all, I was able to test a brighter version that combines blue with red and yellow accents. Looks youthful, while there are also more soothing colors, such as black and gray. Instead of the manufacturer’s name, a logo is applied to the case.

The material of the case is matte, it does not collect prints, but abrasions and scratches are welcome, but for this we had to thoroughly tweak the case in our pockets. I had no complaints about the strength of the plastic itself. The same cannot be said about the case cover. It seems to close securely, but if you do not press it a little harder, then a small gap forms, and with a strong directional movement of the hand with the case, you can open it with a further flight of the headphones outward, the magnetic mounts inside are also not the most durable. Not to say that this can be accidentally reproduced, but there is work to do. The rest of the case body is tight, assembly without squeaks. There are no controls on the case. The case is protected from dust and water jets from any direction, the rating index is IP55, extreme sportsmen will definitely not refuse this option.

By default, the earbuds are equipped with additional spacers for better fixation in the ear, they go behind the antihelix, thereby ensuring a monolithic fit. No matter how you shake your head, the Skullcandy Indy Evo will not fly out of your ears, the main thing is to choose the spacers and attachments in size. The touch surface on both earbuds, like each of the attachments, is marked with the same stylized shard, the commands are responsible for switching tracks and controlling calls, as well as for the volume: pressing the right earpiece will increase the volume, and the left earpiece will decrease it.

A short management course is available in the Skullcandy proprietary application (Android, iOS), here you can also configure the behavior of the built-in microphones, a kind of passive noise reduction control. Ambient Mode will help you hear better sounds around you, while the Music, Podcast and Movie options will adjust the equalizer to suit your content consumption scenarios. Switching between equalizer settings is carried out with two short and one long press on the touch pad, Ambient Mode on / off – one short and one long. Not the easiest system, but you can remember it quickly.

The touch controls work well, although not everyone likes it. I note the absence of any negative sensations after prolonged use, ears do not hurt regardless of the duration of listening to music, nothing presses on my head. If you wish, you can use each earphone separately, while the second should be in the case.

Sound quality

Skullcandy Indy Evo is definitely not an audiophile model, while there is almost nothing to complain about the sound in the segment up to 6 rubles. Headphones confidently swing almost any genre, except that in dynamic and aggressive directions, sometimes the detail of the instruments is lost. I liked that there is no “sand” and the feeling of compressed sound in terms of volume, as well as there is no shortage of low frequencies, it so happens that in some compositions there are even too many of them. I liked the general character of the sound.

The in-channel tight fit provides surprisingly good passive noise rejection. At the same time, the presence of Ambient Mode prompts the idea of ​​a certain algorithm for the operation of microphones, which helps to filter out a fair amount of unwanted noise. Of course, there is no question of any 100%, according to subjective impressions, more than half of the external noise of the Skullcandy Indy Evo successfully wins. In transport, the headphones behave with dignity, do not require increasing the volume, but at the same time they still lose a little in clarity. Solid four with plus.

Working hours

Six hours of music, a day of general work using a case is quite an average figure for the market. It takes an hour in the case to fully charge the headphones. The case itself will replenish the charge in two hours. Fast charging in action: 10 minutes in a case will give an hour of work.

General impressions

The Skullcandy Indy Evo was almost perfect for my everyday model. There is a pleasant sound, and a bright exterior, the application is laconic, but at least it is there, unlike all Sudio models from this collection. Lubricating a good impression is not the strongest and most reliable case cover, there is something to work on. Would I recommend headphones? Yes, with a high degree of probability, the impressions are mostly positive.

Sudio ELVA

Not the most familiar form factor with a neckband combined with active noise cancellation. As a rule, such models show themselves very, very well in use. Naming continues the trend with numbers (tolv – twelve, elva – eleven), but I personally did not find the logic of their use here. At the same time, the model turned out to be interesting.

Appearance, ergonomics

First of all, it’s worth noting the light weight of the Sudio ELVA for the ANC form factor. The silicone neckband is round and flexible, it does not interfere under outerwear, except that in the case of a too narrow throat, you will have to wear ELVA over clothing, IPX5 protection will help in this, they are unlikely to survive prolonged rain, of course. The rim goes into two panels of hard plastic, which contain all the “hardware” and the active noise reduction system. Flat and seemingly not quite strong headphone wires come out of them, which, among other things, do not keep their shape, it looks not very pleasant and neat. However, this does not interfere with use and is not felt.

The front part of the left panel is removable, under which the Type-C connector is hidden, which is responsible for charging the model. We saw a similar approach in the Honor Sport Pro, in the Swedish version the joint is tighter, but it is also more difficult to separate. The kit includes a wire with a Type-C motherboard and a USB Type-A connector in case you don’t have a smartphone with support for reversible charging or modern portable charging with Type-C charging at hand. After TWS convenience, the option is, of course, not so good.

Each Sudio ELVA cable has two small magnetically coupled pads that are convenient for connecting unused headphones on your chest. They are adjustable along the entire length of the wire. Their function is purely aesthetic, there is no question of any pause in reproduction.

Control is carried out by means of three buttons on the left panel. A single press on the center button will pause the current song or receive a call, a similar command on the side buttons will increase or decrease the volume. A long press on the center key will end the current conversation, on the side keys – will switch the song to the next or one back. Finally, two quick presses on the center key will toggle ANC on / off.

The wireless adapter for aircraft included in the Sudio ELVA kit is called Flyg (flight) and helps to use the media system on board. Before doing this, you need to make sure that there are no other active Bluetooth devices around, hold down the button on the adapter for 5 seconds and the center button on the headphones in the immediate vicinity for 7 seconds. The end of the flashing of the LED on the adapter means connection. One or two connectors can be used to connect to the aircraft media system. The option is original, the question is how often travelers use the on-board media system.

As for the landing, there are no complaints about it, it is quite reliable, even if you can shake the earpiece out of your ear if you wish, a sharp and unnatural movement will be required. By tradition, I advise you to choose the size of the nozzle.

Sound quality

From the point of view of codecs, everything is calm here, SBC and that’s it. At the same time, the headphones sound good, quite lively and bright, with adequate detail. The frequency range is not the widest, every now and then I wanted to hear more mids, but for active noise cancellation, the result is acceptable. Interestingly, I did my best to listen to the difference between normal mode and ANC, but apart from better work of cutting off sound pollution, they are no different. This is at least strange and speaks more of a plus to the passive than to the active “noise control”.

The test in loud surroundings was successfully passed by the headphones, I traveled a lot in them on the subway, a very pleasant experience, even if it does not differ in anything revolutionary from other ANC models. Let me remind you that ANC headphones can cause unpleasant sensations at a physiological level, a signal that is released in antiphase to noise can cause dizziness and even headache. So if you have not used headphones with this technology before, then it is better to use the services of a showroom before buying or ask your friends to listen to headphones.

The sound is nothing outstanding, but I did not find any obvious problems or criticisms for myself.

Working hours

For Sudio ELVA, up to 11 hours of operation without ANC is declared, the included noise cut-off will reduce the operating time by an hour, which in general should be enough for a rather long flight. A full charge will take two hours, in fast charge mode you can get 2 hours of use after 15 minutes at the outlet. There is no charge indication on the model’s case, a low level will be reported by the voice assistant.

General impressions

Sudio ELVA is different in ergonomics and, probably, even inferior to TWS-models, which are more compact and neat and do not require the presence of a certain connector nearby for charging. All this does not make such a form factor inconvenient in terms of ergonomics, it is quite a good option both for urban and for flights, since the equipment is just preparing for such a scenario. The sound is of high quality, however, it seems that the model is a little overrated. A pleasant model for those who are not yet ready to completely abandon wires.

realme Buds Air Pro

A very nice model from realme, which I briefly mentioned in the digest of recently presented ecosystem products. The first TWS solution with ANC in the manufacturer’s line, the level is not bad.

Appearance, ergonomics

As I wrote in the last article, the exterior of the model will definitely be appreciated by lovers of minimalism: a strict case without any visually prominent elements, except for the realme inscription and the LED above it, which lights up only at certain moments. On the right is a button for switching the headphones to pairing mode, a Type-C connector on the bottom. The plastic of the case is glossy, you have to constantly fight with prints. It’s hard to say if the situation will be better in white, but personally I am very impressed with the black version. The visual part reminded me of two models from Huawei at the same time: Freebuds 3 (case) and Freebuds Pro (headphones). It is clear that the design can hardly be called unique on the market, but it is quite successful, in my opinion, especially in the context of the ergonomics of this model.

There are no complaints about the assembly and the strength of the fastening of the cover and headphones in the case, the reliability is maximum. There is a moment with the process of removing the headphones: it is not so easy to do it with gloves, the plastic slips and does not give in, you have to remove it. The in-ear mount is perfect for my taste, the lightweight body combined with the in-ear arrangement makes the realme Buds Air Pro an excellent option for everyday use anywhere – at home, in the office, on the street. There is IPX4 protection (against splashing water from any direction). Touch commands to switch songs and noise canceling modes work well, as far as is achievable for such a concept, cope with pressing with touch gloves. There is not enough volume control, personally I am more accustomed to control this parameter from the headphones, without taking the smartphone out of my pocket. On the other hand, in most scenarios it is enough to switch the mode from “Transparency” to active noise reduction. In my opinion, this model has the best ergonomics of all the presented ones, at least the probability of subjective preferences is less likely, the design is verified in accordance with the trends.

Sound quality

ANC definitely solves by cutting out up to 80% of external low-frequency noise, but that doesn’t mean that without it, the music experience suffers in any way in terms of frequencies and overall sound character. Yes, with active noise cancellation it is more pleasant in terms of the absence of sound pollution from the outside, but the frequency response without ANC is quite pleasant. Clear reproduction, surround sound, pleasant experience regardless of genre.

In the application, you can activate the low frequency enhancement mode in the event that there is not enough of them due to personal preferences or when the played composition sounds flat due to a not very high-quality playback source. The game mode with minimal latency is also in place, we saw it in the Buds Air, it is activated either by a command in the realme Link application, or by long pressing both headphones at the same time. By the sound of me personally from five, I did not find anything to complain about, everything works, for my taste, not bad, the settings in the application are unpretentious and useful.

Working hours

Most often I used realme Buds Air Pro in ANC mode, in it at 60% volume they worked on average the same 5 hours as stated. The case allows you to charge them three more times, the process takes an hour, as in the case of the case itself. The manufacturer promises that 10 minutes of charging will be enough for 3 hours of work, in my case it turned out to reach 2 and a half hours, which, in general, is also not bad. Wireless charging of the case is not provided.

General impressions

This model is quite versatile and pleasant in all aspects. I have been waiting for a model with ANC from realme for a long time, because they get good TWS, even if there are no top-end characteristics and incredible autonomy. With a realme Buds Air Pro cost of 7 rubles, headphones can definitely be recommended as a good option in their segment. The experience of use reminded that of Honor Magic Earbuds, there is practically nothing to complain about, a decent model, high-quality sound. Perhaps my favorite in the collection, if you exclude the concept of touch control that is not too close to me personally.

Study ETT

We conclude with another model from the Swedes, the same tendency to be called numbers, this time – “one” or “that”. Apparently, the manufacturer is hinting that this is a flagship solution, the top of the line. This is confirmed by the presence of ANC and, of course, the cost of the headphones.

Appearance and ergonomics

The rectangular case and headphones are clearly not slender. At the same time, the “droplets” themselves have a relatively small protrusion for attachment inside the ear, at first glance, even doubts about their reliability arise. But during the first use, everything falls into place: Sudio ETT is very well calibrated in terms of ergonomics, nothing dangles or crashes, and even despite its not the smallest case, the weight of the headphones in the ear is not felt, nothing hurts or rubs. The case is made of matte durable plastic, by default it is accompanied by a white leather strap, the fair sex will clearly appreciate such an accessory. There are no buttons on the case, the Type-C connector is located on the left side panel. Under the Sudio logo there are 4 LEDs showing the percentage of the case’s charge. The lid holds tight and monolithic, like the earbuds in the cradles, and it is quite easy to get them due to the shape of the case.

On the outside of the headphones themselves, nothing is written, on each of them a microphone hole and a physical button are highlighted, through which the functions of the headphones are controlled. Commands for one, two and three presses are involved (pause / answer or end a call, next and previous song, respectively), as well as a long press for two seconds (turn on / off ANC or reject a call). If you hold the button for 6 seconds, the headphones will turn off, and you will be able to turn them on only after placing them in the case and removing them again. The described commands are universal for any headphone and work with XNUMX% accuracy, you should try to press the button by accident. There would also be volume control, and it would be an ideal control method in my coordinate system. Nevertheless, despite the first impression of the design, from the point of view of ergonomics Sudio ETT was definitely pleased, it was unexpected.

The complete set is also pleasing: you can choose from 5 sizes of conventional flat nozzles and 3 pairs of more convex conical nozzles that improve passive noise reduction. True, they are attached to an inconvenient adhesive paper card and closed with a transparent blister, which makes the replacement process not the most organic and simple, but the card itself looks like a package of pills. Such is the Scandinavian approach, what to do.

Sudio ETT supports the use of one headphone, in this ANC mode, of course, does not work. The model can “remember” up to 8 connected devices, which is not bad. There is no control app like other Sudio models.

Sound quality

As in the case of the ELVA model, I did not find the wonders of ETT sounding for myself. Exactly what is needed from the headphones, a minimum of equalization, no frequency distortions, nothing hiss, does not mumble and does not “pour”, the instruments are divided tolerably. But there is also no feeling that you have a flagship solution in front of you. The reason, most likely, is not so much in the sound itself, but in the absence of additional modes and fine tuning of the headphone operation. The manufacturer considers his vision of this process to be the only correct one and has the right to do so, by and large. It turns out quite adequately, even if in some places you want to add character to the sound, it is somehow boring, or something. I would not call it an obvious disadvantage, but the contrast against the background of the same realme is noticeable.

Noise reduction works well, perhaps even better than in ELVA, the engineers can be commended for their work. ANC in operation does not affect the sound in any way. If you pause, then any signals are missing, they can be heard on some models with noise canceling. With the right choice of attachments, you can do without ANC, unless, of course, you need to go down the metro or fly by plane to visit Lake Baikal.

Working hours

And here everything is as stated, there is no deception: clear 4,5 hours of operation from a single charge with ANC, literally a minute per minute. I admit, I haven’t tested it without ANC, I think that reaching the stated 6 hours is quite realistic.

A nice option – support for wireless charging via the Qi protocol, if there is such an accessory in everyday life, it will be nice, put it down and not worry.

General impressions

Initial bizarre visual impressions changed to mercy after use. The control of the physical buttons is definitely closer to me, as well as the good equipment. With excellent ergonomics and a generally pleasant sound without frills, the exterior fades into the background, because when working with headphones, I personally rarely look in the mirror and evaluate myself from the outside.

What you should definitely pay attention to is the cost of Sudio ETT, which starts at 9 rubles in one of the major networks. In the official store, it reaches 200 rubles. A bold move for a brand that is virtually unknown on the market, just like ELVA. Do they cost 10 rubles? Of course, there is no talk of 30 hours of operation on a single charge, as in full-size models, there is simply nowhere to put such batteries. But it seems to me that even 8-10 hours of battery life will be quite enough, which is what I would like to wish the manufacturers.

The ANC functionality is obviously worth adding to the mandatory set for such headphones, although it is not always necessary, but it is better to choose than to be limited in scenarios. Passive noise rejection helps, but not in all cases. For myself, I made a choice a long time ago, as it turned out, TWS in this regard also does not stand still, offering a tolerable level of noise reduction. In the comments, I propose to share the successful, in your opinion, TWS-headphone models, tops for your money with and without ANC.
