Positioning
A huge number of people want to buy a flagship, but not spend as much money on it as it costs. This is especially true for young people who often do not have funds for a flagship and want to purchase a model that is optimal in terms of price / quality ratio. Six months after the release of the original S20 line, Samsung is releasing the Fan Edition, that is, the edition created based on user reviews. It turns out that the S20 FE is a model that was created based on people’s feedback. This is so and not so at the same time, rather it is positioning, when a lightweight flagship does not receive a Lite prefix, but becomes on a par with older models, it can be called a flagship. The Lite prefix did not look logical in such a bundle, it immediately turns out exactly the opposite.
Not all flagship buyers want to get the most of the possibilities, many are rational in their choice and require certain features, while they are indifferent to others. And the S20 FE is the answer to such a request, when a device is made cheaper due to a huge number of little things that affect the final cost. For example, the package contains a 15 W charger (with the S20 it goes for 25 W), there are no headphones. Is it critical for the buyer? Perhaps not, because many claimed that they were ready to abandon such accessories, but would like to get a lower cost. There are different models in the Samsung lineup, and you can choose the one that suits your needs best.
The S20 FE is well suited for young people, and the variety of colors of this model speaks in favor of this.

Design, dimensions, controls
The color range of the S20 FE looks great, everyone can choose the color they like.
The body material is plastic, exactly the same as in the Galaxy Note20, the perception of the devices is the same both in terms of size and quality of workmanship.
Carbon fiber-reinforced matt plastic, good workmanship, pleasant to the touch. The camera block hardly protrudes, and you can use the device without a cover. Those who are afraid of plastic as a case material may, of course, be afraid of this device, what kind of flagship is it made of plastic? But considering that this plastic is not so simple, it raises no objections. On Note20 I looked at the abrasion resistance of such a case, it is maximum. On the plus side – no handprints remain on the case under any circumstances, the device always looks neat.
The dimensions of the smartphone are 159.8 × 74.5 × 8.4 mm, the weight is 190 grams. Large enough but fits well in the hand, the width is typical of modern smartphones. I looked at the device in comparison with the Xperia 5 II, the second device is narrower, it fits better in the hand, but it is called compact. Everything is traditional here.
At the bottom there is a USB Type C connector and a speaker. The handset has several microphones, the noise cancellation system works well during a call. On the right side there is a paired volume rocker and an on / off button. The slot for SIM cards is on the top, it is combined (eSIM is also supported).
The aluminum frame is painted in the same color as the body. There are no shortcomings, everything is familiar. The screen is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is surprising, since the same Note20 has a CG5, but this is a matter of cost.
The fingerprint sensor is inscribed in the screen, it is ultrasonic and is exactly the same that was used in the last generation S10 / S10 + and subsequent Note, as well as S20. Chinese companies have a new generation of sensors that are noticeably larger in area, and it is more convenient to work with them.
The fingerprint sensor is quite applicable in real life, just remember that you need to use glass or film that supports its operation. Any extra layer can ruin the sensor’s performance, for example a soft and thick enough film can make your print versatile. So use glass if you need it and choose good manufacturers.
Display
The screen diagonal is 6.5 inches, the maximum resolution is FullHD +, it is Super AMOLED, excellent color reproduction, the maximum brightness is adjustable over a wide range, the screen operates at 120 Hz (240 Hz sensor). Scrolling becomes smoother, but battery consumption increases by 10-15% on average.
Why isn’t the screen Dynamic AMOLED? The answer is obvious, such a screen is cheaper, but users will not see much of a difference (which iPhone users prove, they think they have the best screens and there is no difference). Here the difference is due to the cost, which is lower. Dynamic AMOLED manifests itself best in difficult conditions, there is also HDR10 +, but it is not there. Do you need it? For users of such devices, probably, this is not as important as their cost.
The great thing is that there is a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which many manufacturers do not use in their flagships. Smooth interface, good perception of both built-in and third-party programs, this is an important feature for a modern smartphone.
By default, the screen is adjusted according to the color gamut “Saturated colors” (there is also “Natural colors”). In this mode, the brightness and contrast of the picture are maximized, and the colors hit the eyes. If the sky is not just blue, but blue. This upset me at some point, because it is impossible to navigate what you are photographing, the screen distorts the picture too much, but everything is fine on the computer. As a result, I turned on “Natural colors”, although they are muted in the menu.
Traditionally, there is a blue filter, a dark theme, including the ability to set work on a schedule. Adaptive screen brightness adjusts to your preferences. In manual mode, you can set the brightness to 400 nits, in automatic mode it reaches 800 nits. This allows you to read your phone screen even under the brightest sun.
As always, there is the AlwaysOn Display mode, it allows you to display the clock, calendar, picture in standby mode. At the same time, the screen does not consume much power, and this makes the look of the phone diversified.
Not the maximum screen in terms of characteristics, but this is the level of the screens of the same iPhone 12 from the point of view of the picture, otherwise you, as usual, have much more possibilities. It is impossible to complain about the screens, but this is the very price / quality ratio, and not the maximum characteristics, as on the older models. Will you see the difference? Only in direct comparison and in difficult lighting conditions.
Battery
The built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 4500 mAh. 15W quick charge included (20W in S25), charging times are as follows:
- 15 minutes – 18%;
- 30 minutes – 37%;
- 45 minutes – 55%;
- 60 minutes – 72%;
- 75 minutes – 88%;
- 90 minutes – 97%.
Charging to 100% occurs in 99 minutes. If you take a 25 W charger, you get the following picture:
- 15 minutes – 25%;
- 30 minutes – 50%;
- 45 minutes – 73%;
- 60 minutes – 91%;
- 75 minutes – 100%.
The gain of 25W charging is obvious, but you can purchase it separately. Most buyers will not do this because they are frugal.
In the settings, you can turn off fast charging if it seems to you that it is wearing out the battery (in practice it is not).
Wireless charging supports up to 15W of power, which allows you to charge your smartphone in 90-95 minutes. It’s also very fast and extremely comfortable. For several years I have forgotten what charging for the night is, always charging my devices on the go, in between. And I never have problems with the fact that they were discharged at some inopportune moment. It takes 10 minutes to get a charge for several hours of non-stop operation. And this is a convenience that can hardly be overestimated.
Reverse reverse charging allows you to recharge accessories or another smartphone, the maximum power is 4.5W.
Now is the time to talk about how long a smartphone works on a single charge. Here the data will differ greatly depending on the settings that you set for the screen, when using 120 Hz, the battery consumption rate increases by 10-15% minimum. I will give the following data: playing video non-stop at 60 Hz gives 19 hours of screen operation, at 120 Hz (which is de facto not needed here, as you understand), you can watch video for 15 hours. The more you use the screen, the faster the 120Hz battery will drain. For example, at 60Hz, you can easily reach 6-7 hours of screen time during the day, with about 20% of the battery remaining. At 120 Hz, it will already be 4-5 hours. I’ll repeat a simple thing, the minimum difference in power consumption is from 10 percent, but the maximum can reach 30%, it all depends on your application usage profile and how often you work with the screen.
In any scenario, a full-time job on this smartphone is easily achievable even for “heavy” users who are constantly staring at their smartphone screen.
Communication capabilities
The device supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), maximum aggregation of LTE frequencies is present.
Support for payment systems Samsung Pay, Google Pay, the work does not raise any questions. There is, of course, full NFC for everything imaginable.
Bluetooth version 5.0, there is support for sending an audio stream to multiple devices. A proprietary QuickShare feature has appeared, which allows you to quickly send large files to other devices from Samsung (a sort of combed Wi-Fi Direct).
GPS is no problem, everything is fine here.
Memory, chipset, performance
There are exactly two memory options – 6/128 and 8/256 GB, most will choose the basic option. The model is built on the Exynos 990 chipset (7 nm) and has no shortcomings in the speed of both the interface and third-party applications. This is a very fast chipset, it has a margin of safety for several years to come.
RAM LPDDR5, it is fast, and tests prove it (the test cannot even fully assess how fast the memory is, modern tests lag behind the development of technologies).
Performance in synthetic tests is as follows.
Камеры
The Galaxy S20 uses a basic set of three cameras, let’s take a look at the specs of the modules.
The front camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels, the pictures are quite good, check them out.
The main camera, as you can see, uses the usual 12 megapixel modules, but an 8 megapixel telephoto module has also been added. There is no autofocus in the wide-angle sensor, but for such shots it is not needed.
The camera interface is familiar, look at it.
The quality of the pictures with the camera is excellent, moreover, the x3 optical zoom often coincides with that of the Note20, where the resolution of the telephoto module is higher. In general, this is a confident level of flagships, look at the examples of pictures and videos.

Software features
Everything here is quite simple and commonplace, there are pre-installed applications that expand the capabilities of the device, Samsung users know them well. OneUI version 2.5.

Impressions
In terms of call quality and call volume, everything is good and typical for Samsung. In this device there were many complaints about the speed of the fingerprint sensor and the responsiveness of the screen. As a result, two software updates were released that corrected these shortcomings. I checked the device with them (I had no problems and before that, it took more than one day to look for a person with a problem smartphone), the shortcomings went away and did not appear anymore. At the moment, I am not aware of the presence of such shortcomings on the current software versions.
The base model is priced at 49 rubles, while the 990GB model costs 256 rubles more. I’m not sure that the choice of the 6 GB version will be a priority for many, since they choose such a device for the price / quality ratio, they want to get the lowest price. And for its target audience, the model is very interesting, it is supported by noticeable marketing, advertising both on the streets and on TV, on the Internet. As a result, the model quickly became noticeable in sales, it almost caught up with the original S000 from this point of view.
At the same time, the cost of S20 today is about 58 thousand rubles (there is a promotion, but it is long). On the S20 side there are other body materials, the screen is better, but the battery is smaller, and the bundle is also richer. Speaking with buyers of the S20 FE, I heard several responses that the choice of this device is a rational approach, just saving on what is not needed. And the majority, apparently, choose the device based on this.
In the lines of other manufacturers, the choice of devices in this price group is huge (the exception is Apple, you will not buy a modern smartphone at the same price and with such characteristics). But the choice of the same S20 FE is the choice of a trusted brand, and in most cases it will not work to convince you that you can look at something else.
