Taiwanese company MediaTek has unveiled its new Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 5G smartphone chipsets, manufactured using 6nm process technology and featuring advanced AI, imaging and multimedia functionality with 5G support. The Dimensity 1200 features an eight-core processor, powered by an Arm Cortex-A78 ultra-core clocked at up to 3 GHz, three Arm Cortex-A78 super-cores and four energy-efficient Arm Cortex-A55 cores, as well as a nine-core GPU. The Dimensity 1100 is also an eight-core processor that includes four Arm Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 2,6GHz and four energy-efficient Arm Cortex-A55 cores, as well as a nine-core Arm Mali-G77 GPU. The older model supports displays with a refresh rate of 168 Hz, and the younger one – up to 144 Hz.
The first devices with the new MediaTek Dimensity 1200 and 1100 chipsets are expected to hit the market at the end of the first – beginning of the second quarter of this year. The Chinese company realme has already announced that it will be one of the first to release a flagship smartphone based on Dimensity 2021 in 1200. By the way, about realme, this week the company announced that, according to a new report from Counterpoint, in the third quarter of 2020 it entered the top -10 global manufacturers of wearable devices, occupying 2% of the TWS market (true wireless stereo hearables and smartwatches).
On paper, the new MediaTek chipsets look good, but you need to test the products to understand how they will perform in real conditions. I don’t think MediaTek will be able to take away a significant market share from Qualcomm in the upper price segment, but in the middle and lower segment, products based on Dimensity chipsets will be in demand.

Yes, this week Qualcomm also announced the release of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G mobile platform, which is the successor to its flagship Snapdragon 865 Plus solution, which boasts an increased clock speed of the main core of the Qualcomm Kryo 585 processor to 3,2 GHz. At the same time, the new Snapdragon 870 chipset supports Qualcomm’s proprietary Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology for adapting gameplay, global 5G with sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands, as well as super-intuitive AI.
The first product on this chipset will be the Motorola Edge S smartphone, which Lenovo will unveil on January 26th.
LG Closes Mobile Division?
LG is considering selling its mobile device business. This possibility is mentioned in the company’s statement, where it emphasizes that the moment has come when it is necessary to make a decision on its future fate. In a statement, the company notes that in a highly competitive mobile market, the company’s mobile division has generated $ 4.5 billion in losses over the past 23 quarters, none of which has been profitable. The company also emphasized in its statement that nothing threatens the current employees of the mobile unit, they will all continue to work in the main staff of the company. Against the backdrop of such news, the value of LG Electronics shares increased by 12.9%, and this information was well received by investors.
In the niche of mobile devices, LG has recently had a rather weak position. The company embarked on a journey of experimenting with devices, but so far none of them hit the mark and were not accepted by the market. A smartphone with an additional case with a second screen, a rotator with two displays – it all looks like a show product, but not like a commercially successful device. Perhaps it is right that the company is thinking about closing its mobile division. Yes, the market lacks bold and original solutions, but they are interesting only in terms of study, but, alas, they cannot bring profit.

Honor with Google services
After Huawei sold its Honor brand to a consortium of Chinese investors and Honor gained independence, there were no obstacles left to cooperate with Google. It became known that the planned new models of the Honor brand will receive Google services in the spring of this year and will lose the AppGallery app store from Huawei. Previously released smartphones will retain the AppGallery app store.
It’s even wondering if the “new” Honor will be able to lift the sanctions and break into the smartphone market again in the spring. If there really are no restrictions on the company and it can cooperate with Google again, then the market will clearly revive, since Honor’s products should be interesting, although apart from Huawei, they probably will no longer be so affordable.

New Xiaomi
In December 2020, Xiaomi announced the release of the MIUI 12.5 shell, which should be lighter, faster and more convenient than MIUI 12. Now Xiaomi has published a list of 28 models that will be the first to receive the update. The list includes flagship and mid-range models from the Xiaomi and Redmi brands. The update will first be released to users in China, and later will be available to global devices. According to the developers, in MIUI 12.5 a lot of work has been done to optimize the power consumption and memory consumption of applications. Also, in the latest version of the shell, the work with gestures will be improved and the response time of the interface will be accelerated. The developers claim that with the new rendering system, the interface performance will increase 20 times compared to previous versions of the shell. The release schedule for the MIUI 12.5 update with exact dates has not yet been presented.
Let’s wait for MIUI 12.5, which, in theory, should work even better than the 12th version, although, to be honest, I don’t suffer much from the latter on Mi 10 Pro either.

Electric crossover from Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the EQA compact electric crossover, which will go on sale in the European market this spring. The electric vehicle will have a range of 486 km in accordance with the European driving cycle NEDC and 426 km in the WLTP cycle. The car will receive a 66.5 kWh battery and a 140 kW (190 hp) electric motor with front axle drive. In the European market, the EQA 250 model will be available at a price of 47 540 € (4.3 million rubles). Later, Mercedes-Benz promises to release an all-wheel drive version of the car, a version with a 200 kW electric motor, as well as a modification with a power reserve of more than 500 km according to the WLTP standard.

A week with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity for Nintendo Switch, released by Koei Tecmo with support from Nintendo, is a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which takes place 100 years before Breath of the Wild. Despite the fact that the action of the new game takes place in the universe of The Legend of Zelda, the genre of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is classified as musou. The genre is quite specific, in it one or several heroes fight hundreds and thousands of enemies, which requires the player to actively press the buttons, while also choosing combinations for special blows.
The style of the game is completely in the spirit of the original, and, unlike some other musou games, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity even has a storyline. But to constantly crush enemies to the right and to the left is such a thing, a little for an amateur, and after a couple of dozen large-scale battles, I already just put off the Switch, since some monotony in the genre is starting to get boring. Plus, in massive battles, fps drops are sometimes noticeable, which, of course, affects the perception, especially if you are not a fan of the genre. On the other hand, Age of Calamity as a variety is well worth your attention, nevertheless, sometimes actively pressing the keys, it turns out, is even pleasant, especially in the world and with the characters of The Legend of Zelda.
If you like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, do not rush to purchase Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, first try the demo version of the game so as not to be disappointed later. And it should also be said that the game has not been translated into Russian, and this applies not only to voice acting, but also to subtitles.
