Moto 360 v3 smartwatch review (2020)

Positioning

Motorola was a pioneer in the smartwatch market, with the first Moto 360 released at the end of 2014 as a revelation for the market. Positive reviews, a good level of sales, but the Android Wear watch did not take off, the platform itself became a limitation – the short operating time, the software itself, which was very different from competing solutions and was unpredictable from the consumer’s point of view. It even led Google to call its platform Wear OS to shake off the plume of past failures. This did not help much to rectify the situation, since something had to be changed within the company, and the magical renaming without changing the development team, the people behind the product, did not change anything.

Perhaps for this reason, Motorola and Lenovo later actually abandoned the direction of smartwatches, another version of the Moto 360 came out, and then everything froze. The watches did not gain much fame against the background of competitors, they had rather sluggish sales, by the time of the second version the competition in the market intensified.

A third-party company eBuynow acquired the rights to manufacture watches under the Moto 360 brand, ventured to create a continuation of this series. It is not a very uncommon situation when the original owner of a development and trademark gives his creation to someone else at the mercy of someone, but this happens in mid-range companies. The Lenovo brand in smartphones has suffered an unconditional disaster, and the Motorola they bought is just getting out of the hole, reaching a modest level of profitability. And today Motorola is clearly not up to the clock, the company does not have such a priority. But it would be nice to have watches in your portfolio, especially if someone else is responsible for their creation, production and sale. The risks are minimal, at most the watch will not take off and will sell poorly. But if you help the manufacturer with the creation of the case, the filling of such a device, and also use the standard platform from Google, then there should be no big problems. The example of the third generation Moto 360 is also a demonstration of how standard the development approach has become, you can take various bricks and assemble a device from them at the level of competitors. And this also explains why Samsung, Huawei, Apple do not do this and create their systems for smartwatches in the field of both hardware and software. That is, Moto 360, even at the design stage, lost to the solutions of these companies in one form or another, since Wear OS is an outsider in the smartwatch market. Realizing this, eBuynow tried to attract buyers with the package bundle, the good design of the case and the way the watch is positioned. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Design, dimensions, controls

The watch comes in a round box, reminiscent of the first version of the Moto 360, a complete borrowing.

The bundle looks attractive, in addition to charging, it includes two straps – leather and silicone.

On the hand, both straps are good, although the leather straps do not fit the hand so tightly.

But you can swim with silicone, there are no restrictions (the case will withstand 3 ATM, tests show water resistance at 10 strokes).

There are exactly three color solutions – gray and pink case, as well as black.

The case is made of stainless steel, some elements have additional coating, and the screws are made of titanium (this is more a marketing than a necessity, a desire to show off with “expensive” material).

The watch has a diameter of 42 mm (to be precise, 42.8 mm), the standard strap is 20 mm, you can replace it with any other.

The charger fits over the back of the watch.

On the inner surface you can see two contacts for charging, it is not wireless here (which also indirectly indicates the cost of the watch).

The sensor on the inside is familiar, it is indicated that this is the last generation, but there is a certain slyness here. The latest generation of sensor where and from whom? In the same Galaxy Watch or Apple Watch, there are other types of sensors, and they win in most parameters, since they are more complex.

The technical part of the watch is simple, it has improved compared to the previous version of Moto 360, but it is impossible to consider it as something special in 2020. A very well-made case, which has always distinguished the Moto 360. Nice design, the same as that of a regular watch. All this speaks in favor of this model. I love the ergonomics and the way the watch can be operated.

On the right side there are two keys, the top one rotates, that is, you can scroll through the lists. The bottom button can be customized to call up your functions. The controls are intuitive and you will master it in minutes.

Check out the Moto 360 against the Galaxy Active 2.

I like the inner side of Moto 360 less, there is a minimum of glass, ordinary plastic, which they decided to beat due to the texture.

Also, for me, this watch is a little wide in height of the case, but in the photo, due to the edges, it is not so noticeable, the design hides this feature.

Display

The screen has the following specifications: 1.2-inch, 390 x 390 OLED, full color Always On Display, Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3.

Moto 360 v3 smartwatch review (2020)

In AlwaysOn Display mode, the screen changes the splash screen, it becomes not very bright, as you can see in the photo below. This is the usual behavior for this kind of watch faces on OLED screens, there is nothing special here. Raise your hand, and the display “lights up”, you can see the dial you have chosen, and there are many of them.

In bright sun, the screen is noticeably worse readable than in the Galaxy Watch 3 or Galaxy Active 2.

Battery

The built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 355 mAh, which is typical for watches of the previous generation, but not for models of this season with a similar case diameter. The manufacturer claims that charging time to 100% is 60 minutes, and in practice this is exactly the case, which is not bad.

Battery life remains a weak point for Wear OS, as it is far from optimal. So, Moto 360 lasts about one day, subject to a small or medium number of notifications, so that you do not jerk the watch. If you turn on the power saving mode, when only the clock is working (the dial, alas, cannot be selected), then they will calmly live for more than a week.

The built-in GPS when working discharges the watch before our eyes, 2-3 hours of work, and you do not have 60-70% of the battery charge. Therefore, it is impossible to assume that the watch will be good for those who are actively involved in sports, cycling or running a lot. This is a watch for quiet use, charging every night or on the road. What I personally do not like, because I am used to the fact that smartwatches can be charged no more than once every 2-3 days, and then with very active use.

Communication capabilities

The watch has built-in Wi-Fi, which is used when you are at home or in the office, it saves energy (2.4 GHz only). There is also Bluetooth 4.2, which gives away a rather ancient platform that was used in the watch. This is all a disadvantage for them, since the higher the Bluetooth version, the less energy is spent, plus there are additional chips. Everything is very standard here.

Unfortunately, there is no version with eSIM and LTE support, since it was apparently expensive, the watch was created for a small edition. You can answer the call on the watch, but you will have to talk on the smartphone.

Built-in NFC is used for Android Pay, there are no complaints about this.

Memory, chipset, performance

The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform belongs to the previous generation, it is well known, and it is clear that it cannot provide a long battery life on a single charge, but the performance does not raise any big questions, the interface is responsive.

The watch has 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal memory (5.5 GB of which are available). Why you need so much memory, I don’t know, because there’s nothing to do here. You might want to keep your music on the watch.

Wear OS software

Setting up your watch is straightforward, you just need to download the Wear app from Google to your smartphone (iOS / Android), and then follow the instructions on the screen. You can copy your Google account to the device (either one or several), you can not do this, then the watch will be a companion to the smartphone and will not be able to check mail on its own, as well as use the settings that you made in Google.

In addition to standard applications from Google, about which I see no point in talking, although I will mention that there is a voice search, the assistant can set an alarm, and so on. Additional applications are a stopwatch (the countdown timer is also called a stopwatch for some reason), there is an application for washing hands (it’s a timer!).

Input can be via on-screen keyboard, continuous input is supported.

You can also draw emoji, and pictures appear immediately.

In the end, you can dictate the answer with your voice, everything works great.

Moto 360 v3 smartwatch review (2020)

There are additional applications in the Play Store, but there are not many of them. Wear OS watches remain a thing in themselves, for example, you cannot constantly and automatically measure your heart rate (they are discharged, therefore they did not add such a function). There is no automatic training detection, and sports capabilities, to put it mildly, are modest in comparison with competitors. There are many drawbacks for which the system can be scolded, but Google is in no hurry to fix it all.

Impressions

The original cost of the Moto 360 was $ 300, now they are being given away for $ 200 as part of a sale. In Russia, they are not yet officially represented and, possibly, will not be. The price on the gray market is 25 thousand rubles or more. Which, in my opinion, is quite expensive, based on the iron used in this product. I like the look of the watch, the way it is made (in fact, this is a repetition of the past watches), I like the two straps in the set, but everything else is old iron! And when it is sold at the cost of a modern smartwatch, confusion arises. My set of complaints about Wear OS does not change in any way, it remains the same every year. This system is limited in its capabilities, and this is its huge disadvantage, it is not at the level of competitors in almost everything.

Moto 360 v3 smartwatch review (2020)

Considering that there are watches from Samsung, Apple, Huawei on the market, the place for Moto 360 is only among those who want to be different and stand out. And I’m ready to fork out for it, but all the other “little things” do not matter. For Russia, this is definitely not a mass product, and it will have insignificant sales.

We thank motorola-phone.ru for the provided watch.
