Positioning

The positioning of the laptop is the simplest. The HP Pavilion Gaming is an affordable gaming laptop. That is, HP tried to make it as affordable as possible (for example, a completely plastic case and a simple design), but at the same time a productive solution (but an RTX 2060 card and a 10th generation processor). In theory, a laptop should be a hot product. I can assume that HP Pavilion Gaming has made a contrast to the G-series of gaming laptops from Dell. And those and those laptops can not be called elegant and designer, but the price is so tempting that it allows you to close your eyes to the minuses.

At the same time, HP is great, as it gave HP Pavilion Gaming a zest. The laptop has a 16.1-inch screen.

So, the main selling elements that should be hooked are:

  • 16.1 “anti-glare screen in 15.6” body
  • GeForce RTX 2060 6GB graphics card
  • Fast SSD PCI-E 3.0 x4 and additional HDD
  • Battery life up to 11 hours in video viewing mode
  • Good variety of ports, including an SD card slot
  • Aggressive green keyboard with separate number pad
  • Slightly oversized touchpad
  • That the laptop is quiet.

Appearance

Recently, manufacturers have finally realized that their main customers are not pubertal acne boys and girls (what do you want, women also love games!), Moaning: “Buy it! Buy it! ”- and wealthy adults. For this reason, the design of gaming laptops has turned 180 degrees, becoming more serious and concise. Now with a gaming laptop, you can come to the office, and no one will pay attention, it has such a typical and gray design.

In the case of the HP Pavilion Gaming 16, the designers made a compromise. It’s plastic, plump, and has a green keyboard. Moreover, the poisonous green color is visible even when the backlight is turned off, since the ends of the keys are painted green.

However, it cannot be denied that the laptop has its own style. For example, notice the font on your keyboard. It should be associated with command line and DOS.

There are no questions about the assembly. Assembled with high quality and well, given the weight of the laptop, it is obvious that it can be opened with one hand. The overall dimensions are compact and the device fits comfortably in a backpack designed for a typical 15.6-inch laptop.

The laptop has an excellent set of ports. There is an SD slot, Ethernet, and even an HDD operation indicator.

Especially made a shot of how the laptop looks stained. Traces remain on the black matte plastic. They are not very noticeable. Surprisingly, it takes effort to completely cleanse.

Screen and webcam

HP has managed to strike a great balance with the HP Pavilion Gaming 16. For the money, the laptop has a great screen. Good color rendering, excellent anti-reflective coating, good viewing angles.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

By default, the screen is set to 125% magnification. Due to the fact that this is absolutely not striking, I could not understand why I have one of the dashboards configured for Full HD resolution, crookedly displayed. So be aware.

The brightness is in line with the declared 300 nits. In general, it is assumed that you will be playing indoors.

The laptop stayed with me for the New Year holidays, during which I played about 30 hours on it in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. And he was happy and contented like a Thai elephant. And he never complained to the screen.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

Of course, if you take any Dell XPS 15 or HP Omen, the difference in screens will be obvious. However, the HP Pavilion Gaming 16 provides an excellent display for its price point. And we are talking about games, movies, work.

As you can see from the picture above, the laptop has a webcam. You will be seen, most likely, recognized. And they will definitely hear it, since there are two microphones around the webcam.

Keyboard and Touchpad

HP can be praised for not reinventing the wheel, but using the most standard layout. Separate Home, End, PgUp and PgDn buttons, number pad, two Shift keys. You can only find fault with the paired arrow keys. But in a gaming laptop, this is not so important.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

The keys have a deep travel, good spacing between them. It turned out to be a good standard keyboard. The highlight was the highlight. It can be seen that the budget and opportunities were limited, so they made such a decision. The keyboard has two levels of backlighting.

The font on the keyboard, as I understand it, should cause associations with fonts in command lines or in DOS.

In promotional materials, HP writes about the enlarged touchpad. Well, he’s not lying. Dimensions 11.5 by 7.5 cm, that is, formally added one centimeter on each side. The touchpad is plastic, it supports gestures, it is pressed through, imitating the mouse buttons.

Performance

In terms of performance, the laptop is in perfect order. In my sample, a 6-core i7 of the 10th generation was installed, but, as I understand it, there are versions from i5 to 4 physical cores. GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB is the top-end graphics card for this model. There are options with GTX cards. In my opinion, you shouldn’t take them, since then the laptop will lose its main strengths: ray tracing in games, as well as DLSS 2.0 technology, which allows Cyberpunk 2077 to spin at 60 fps.

The main highlight of the laptop is the GeForce RTX graphics card

The laptop has a spacious case, standard screws, so nothing prevents the user from changing the SSD, HDD and RAM, if such a desire arises. However, if there is a desire to change the same SSD, then it should be noted that HP originally installed a high-speed drive. Accordingly, you need to change to something similar, and not save.

The gaming performance of the laptop is up to the mark. Played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla all New Year’s holidays. While I was sick with coronavirus, I used to play for 6 hours a day. Although it would be more correct to say, not so much playing as just wandering back and forth and floating on the ship. Like walking (reading or watching films did not work, because there you need to delve into the essence). The performance of frames per second did not drop, the game produced stable 40-50 fps at maximum settings.

However, I was once again convinced that everything depends on optimization and the skill of the developers. I did not run RDR 2 on a laptop, but the 3DMark benchmark claims that the game will produce less than 30 fps at Full HD resolution. In contrast, there is Cyberpunk 2077, which everyone calls a new generation game that requires powerful hardware, and Sony even removed the game from the store, as it was shamelessly slowing down on PS4. I have not encountered similar problems. Settings on ultra + DLSS 2.0 for maximum performance and I have a stable 60 fps. If you set DLSS 2.0 to maximum quality, then 38 fps (although I did not notice the difference in the picture). And this is already a matter of ethics. Consoles have strict limits and standards, so developers have to bother with optimizations. In the case of a computer, you can cheat. Like, and so it will do, buy yourself just more powerful hardware. Yes, the creators of Metro Exodus? Such logic?

In synthetic tests, the laptop performed well. We can say that HP engineers realized the full potential of the RTX 2060 Max-Q card, providing it with ample space and good cooling. The laptop does not heat up, but actively blows out air. However, it is really quiet. There is no desire to crush him with a book, just in case, so that he does not fly away. The CPU is not getting too hot. Below on the test Port Royal made a graph of temperatures. I ran the tests sequentially, and Port Royal at the end, so, logically, by this moment the laptop should have warmed up to the maximum.

Battery life

HP claims some kind of super performance in battery life – up to 6 hours 45 minutes. He puts an asterisk and explains that this is with a screen brightness of 150 nits, which is rather dim. My measurements showed that the laptop, in general, is ready to hold out for 5-5.5 hours in office mode. The measurement was made on the basis of a trip to the Sapsan. 4 hours of the screen at comfortable brightness (80%) is 70%. In maximum performance mode, the laptop will last less than 1.5 hours.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

The laptop comes with a 200 W adapter, which weighs just over 0.5 kg.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

Formally, I have only one nagging about the battery. A gaming laptop assumes a long battery life. Accordingly, it is desirable that there is a battery conservation mode (for example, limiting the charge at the level of 50-80%). And here it is not. So it’s curious to look at the battery condition after a year of operation.

In general, I wrote down this question for myself, since, perhaps, there are some engineering limitations. Right now I have a Dell Alienware RTX 2080 Super Max-Q and 4K OLED gaze-tracking screen on my test at a cosmic price point. I brought these characteristics to make it clear that the product is premium and stuffed with technologies as much as possible. However, for some reason, it also does not have a battery conservation mode, traditional for Dell laptops. I could not get any comments, so I’ll ask a question, when will there be any online presentations for journalists from the USA.

Impression and competitors

HP has a balanced product. It doesn’t break performance records, or try to impress with design or premium highlights. It’s a workhorse game at a great price.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

Considering the design with acid green elements, I would like to say that the laptop is ideal for schoolchildren and students whose parents want to encourage for a good study. On the other hand, I worked with this laptop for almost a month while I was in St. Petersburg. HP Pavilion Gaming 16 completely covered all my office and gaming needs, and when it was needed, it adequately lasted all the way to Sapsan. By the way, the price of a test copy is 104 rubles. You can pay attention to the variant with the i990 processor. With the same other characteristics, the cost is already 5 rubles.

Affordable HP Pavilion Gaming 16 review: Cyberpunk 2077 at 60 fps

In my opinion, the main competitor is the Dell G5. Both laptops are lumps of plastic, sharpened for maximum value for your money. Dell G5 is slightly more expensive (although it depends on configurations). Perhaps its obvious advantage is the 144 Hz screen. Another point is that, judging by the site, the G5 has a standard version of RTX 2060 (not Max-Q). Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to test this product, but in theory this gives about + 10% performance. Whether it is worth overpaying the additional 7-10 thousand for the extra 5-10 fps is an open question.
