Positioning

In mid-February 2020, Xiaomi held a closed presentation of two new products in China – Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro. It turned out to be non-public for a well-known reason – because of the 2019-nCoV outbreak.

If you want to get information about smartphones briefly and with a little bit of irony, then take a look at the link below:

In this article, I will introduce you to the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, which has been in my hands for several days. That is, the description of the appearance and various functions will be based on a “live” sample, and not according to pictures from the Internet. A little later, when Mi 10 Pro appears in Russia, we will definitely prepare for you a separate full review of such an intriguing and important device this year.

I think, and without clarification, it is clear that Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro is the company’s main product in terms of positioning in the lineup – it is a flagship on all fronts.

Here they single out almost the best screen of all possible at the moment with perfect calibration, the fastest Qualcomm processor, high-speed memory, a set of fancy and pumped-up cameras and other important chips of a modern smartphone.

The most “affordable” version of this model (8/256 GB) costs 5 yuan, which in terms of rubles is just over 000 rubles. A little more expensive is the device with 50 GB of RAM and 000 internal memory – 12 yuan (256 rubles). Well, the most advanced Mi 5 Pro with 500 GB of RAM and 55 GB of internal memory will cost 000 yuan, or 10 rubles.

Appearance

I will not tell you anything new and interesting about the design of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro – this is a typical representative of the last year: a huge one with a curved screen, with a large number of cameras on the back without being designed into a single block. You pick up the phone and think: whether it is Huawei P30 Pro, or some of the “mates”, or the fat Honor or OnePlus.

By the way, OnePlus, which we reviewed not so long ago, is the same plus or minus: impressive dimensions, weight, sloping screen, matte “back” and so on.

Detailed first look at Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

The device Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro is really big – 162x74x8.9 mm, and it’s better not to talk about the weight – 208 grams. Together with the cover, 240 grams are released! Using such a cobblestone is not the greatest pleasure. In my opinion, a smartphone should weigh no more than 180 grams.

The weight of the device affects not only ergonomics, but also the experience of use. You can’t just throw such a heavy phone on a table or a bedside table: here either the phone will break, or the table will crack. In addition, the Mi 10 Pro decently pulls off the pockets of not only a shirt or jacket, but also jeans.

In short, be prepared for the fact that the weight of the device is obscenely heavy.

Using Mi 10 Pro is quite comfortable with one hand. But these sloping corners of the screen are the purest evil. Well, Android does not know how in such a form factor! I will not write the reasons again, since I express my thoughts about such displays in almost every article.

The front panel houses a selfie camera. It has a small size, exactly smaller than most similar devices. But it is still perceived as a foreign body: it is somehow asymmetrically located between the upper and lower borders of the notification panel.

On the top edge, you will find the earpiece. Heard clearly and legibly, loudly.

At the top there is one of the loudspeakers, an IR transmitter and a microphone.

At the bottom there is a second speakerphone, microphone, USB-C and a dual slot for nano SIM cards.

On the right is the power button and volume rocker.

On the back there is a whole bunch of cameras, flash and laser focusing. Who cares: the complete case covers the camera module, but they do not protrude.

Two colors are available for sale: white and blue (closer to gray). The back panel is frosted glass. The prints remain but are not very noticeable.

Display

Screen 6,67 inches, Super AMOLED, 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5: 9 ratio, 386 ppi, Corning Gorilla Glass 5, DCI-P3, HDR10 +, 90 Hz, 180 Hz touch processing, brightness up to 1200 nits, more accurate color reproduction

The maximum brightness in manual mode was 800 cd / m2. When the “Sunlight mode” option was enabled, the brightness in my sample did not increase.

PWM check. The “Anti-flicker mode” option is disabled:

  • 100% brightness – 5% ripple rate
  • 80% – 5.5% CP
  • 70% – 8% CP
  • 60% – 50% CP
  • 50% – 72% CP
  • 40% – 77% CP
  • 30% – 60% CP
  • 20% – 40% CP
  • 10% – 27% CP
  • 1% – 17% CP

PWM check. The “Anti-flicker mode” option is enabled:

  • 100% brightness – 5% ripple rate
  • 80% – 5.5% CP
  • 70% – 17% CP
  • 60% – 18% CP
  • 50% – 19% CP
  • 40% – 20% CP
  • 30% – 20% CP
  • 20% – 21% CP
  • 10% – 23% CP
  • 1% – 19% CP

What can be said from this data? DCDimming works, but not well enough as the ripple ratio is around 20% on average. Let me remind you that it is advisable to keep the CP up to 20%, and preferably up to 10%. So in terms of PWM, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro is definitely not the best.

The colors are bright and juicy. The resolution, as it seems to me, is rather low for a 6.7-inch diagonal. I would like QHD +.

Working hours

Battery 4500 mAh, 65W fast and 30W wireless charging, 10W reverse charging

Since I did not have the device for long, some parameters could not be found out. I was able to measure the time in toys at maximum brightness – this is just over 8 hours, video playback – about 20 hours, about 5.5 hours of screen glow at automatic brightness.

Here it is worthwhile to understand that I was self-contained at home, the phone was connected only to a Wi-Fi network, and the device did not have Google services (the version for China was on hand).

Detailed first look at Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

Wireless and reverse charging works like a clock. The phone charges over a wire from a 65 W power adapter in 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Memory, processor and performance

Memory 8 – 12 GB / 128/256/512 GB

The RAM is LPDDR5 (8 GB), the speed is only 17 MB / s. This is a low value, usually such parameters are given by smartphones in the price category up to 000 rubles.

Detailed first look at Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

Built-in memory UFS 3.0 (256 GB) shows a space speed of 1400/800 MB / s. As far as I remember, I have not yet had such fast gadgets on the test.

Detailed first look at Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

The processor is the well-known Qualcomm Snapdragon 865:

Processor Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865 (7 nm +), Octa-core (1 × 2.84 GHz Kryo 585 & 3 × 2.42 GHz Kryo 585 & 4 × 1.80 GHz Kryo 585), graphics Adreno 650

I will not dwell on it, as it is a flagship chip with appropriate parameters. Naturally, the phone is smart, not laggy, all games run at maximum parameters. In Antutu, Mi 10 Pro scores almost 600 points. The body of the phone heats up to about 000 degrees under heavy load, that is, it is quite cold. Throttlite? Well, a little 🙂

Software

As you already understood, my version of the phone is Chinese, which means that it does not have Google services. Despite the fact that I flaunted in Huawei reviews, they say, yes, everything is more or less good, one way or another, you get, excuse the expression, a castrated smartphone: everything seems to work, but as soon as it comes to searching for applications, normal the operation of services, adequate and convenient program updates, pulling up game accounts, reserving chats in WhatsApp, then the gadget turns into a log. Believe me, I have been with such phones on an ongoing basis for about six months – this is a pain!

Камеры

Main camera 1 MP, f / 108, (wide), 1.7 / 1 ″, PDAF, Laser AF, OIS
2 MP, f / 8, (tele), 2.0µm, PDAF, Laser AF, OIS, 1.0x Hybrid Optical Zoom
3 MP, f / 12, (portrait), 2.0 / 1 ″, 2.55µm, dual pixel PDAF, 1.4x optical zoom
4 MP, f / 20, 2.2mm (ultra wide angle)
Front camera 20 MP, f / 2.0, (wide), 1 / 3 ″, 0.9µm

Let’s start with the non-obvious thing – 10X Hybrid Zoom. What it is? 5X optical and 2X digital? Or maybe it’s 3.3X optical and 3.3X digital? I don’t know either.

Judging by the design of the lens, there is no 5X, as such devices are made with a periscope system. It seems to me that this is 3X optical, and then they finish up to 10X with a “digital”.

Having a separate lens with 2X optical zoom is also a strange thing. You already have 3X, why “sculpt a humpback”?

A 108MP module is good. But I would like an adequate autofocus, since at the moment it works very badly. I think this is a common misfortune of all devices with this sensor. As far as I remember, Samsung has a similar problem in the Galaxy Ultra or has already solved it. Another nuance associated with this module is the strongest distortion when shooting objects at close range, the so-called depth of field. Sometimes it’s good – the photos look artistic, sometimes horrible. However, you have three more lenses to choose from.

And what about the quality?

It is here quite at the level of modern flagship devices. On the one hand, not bad, but on the other, there is no “wow” effect. During the day everything is just super, and at night the picture begins to turn into a small “soap”.

I compared the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro with the Huawei P40 (there is no Pro version on hand). The conclusions are as follows: indoors and in low light, Huawei is better at shooting; on the street – on zoom and “shirik” – Xiaomi shoots better.

The Mi 10 Pro shoots videos very well. You have access to 8K @ 30 fps and 4K @ 60 fps for the main module, 4K @ 60 fps for the “shirik” and 4K @ 30 fps for the zoom module.

Note that 8K video is recorded without zoom. For example, Samsung’s picture is very close. However, Xiaomi cannot take a screenshot from such a video.

Digital zoom is available in all video resolutions and works smoothly.

Sample Photos

Video examples:

About sound

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has two speakers for speakerphone output and listening to music. One speaker at the top, the other at the bottom. They are loud and bass, but at the 80-100% level, the sound is slightly distorted. It does not get worse, but the frequency range goes to the side. Perhaps, the speakers in Mi 10 Pro can be called the best among all devices at the moment.

I also forgot to mention that the Mi 10 Pro has a Taptic type vibration motor from Apple. In Xiaomi, it works very nicely, and in the entire system (uninstalling programs, activating some menus, interacting with the interface, and so on), and not only for entering text and vibration during a call!

Impressions

Flagship devices from different companies are now so similar to each other that it is almost impossible to find key chips. They all have huge screens with high hertz, large amount of memory, fast processors, many cameras with plus or minus the same quality.

Detailed first look at Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

Therefore, I cannot single out something unique in Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro – this is an ordinary top-end smartphone, of which there are enough now: OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Ultra, Oppo Find X2, Huawei P40 Pro and others.

With the pros of the Mi 10 Pro, everything is clear, but what about the cons? I would name the big weight, large dimensions, rounded screen and its low resolution. Well, the lack of Google services in the Chinese version of the phone.

Online stores offer it for 60 rubles. Expensive? Yes, as much as similar flagships, except for Apple and Samsung.
