Lenovo – flexible screens in ThinkPad

When Lenovo showed off a laptop with a flexible screen last year, everyone (myself included) took it as a concept that is unlikely to ever hit the market. And here Lenovo starts selling this ThinkPad X1 Fold. And not just in some experimental series, but in its most famous and respected line, from which everyone expects the highest quality – ThinkPad. Placing this logo on a device is like signing a commitment to maximum quality, reliability and productivity. That is, the ThinkPad X1 Fold, with all the desire, cannot be taken lightly. The assessment should be as severe as possible. And the price obliges – $ 2.

So the ThinkPad X1 Fold is a 13.3-inch OLED touchscreen from LG with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels. A stylus is included with the laptop. The laptop has 8GB LPDDR4X with an insane 4267MHz frequency, up to 1TB SSD. 5th Gen Intel® Core ™ i16-L7G11 processor (1.40GHz, up to 3.0GHz Turbo Boost, 5 cores and 5 threads, 4MB Cache), Intel® UHD Graphics, 5MP IR + camera, Intel® Wi-Fi 6 (2 x 2) + Bluetooth 5.1, 2 in USB Type-C T Thunderbolt 4, 50 W * h battery, 5G support. Weight – 997 grams.

The screen is folded in half, with a keyboard on the bottom that can be removed. Ideally, you are supposed to come in, put the screen on the table, and unfold the keyboard in front of you. However, you can use half of the screen by closing the second part with the keyboard. Or you can implement a tablet version of the work. Of course, one of the features of a laptop is that it can perfectly divide windows into halves of the screen.

The laptop is already available for pre-order, but the delivery date is vague – until the end of this year. Without holding the ThinkPad X1 Fold and trying it out, I can’t tell if it’s comfortable or not. However, when looking at the device, I got the impression that this is a competitor for the Galaxy Fold rather than for laptops or tablets. The ThinkPad X1 Fold is perceived as an accessory for executives looking to emphasize their business style and need some kind of intermediate device – larger than a smartphone, but less bulky than the conventional iPad Pro 12.9-inch.

New Nokia smartphones on the Russian market

I guess you’ve already seen the news about the three new smartphones. From the unusual – what Nokia began to do, in addition to standard covers and cases, also headphones with speakers.

# E] [o90: ThinkPad X1 Fold; "Sberbank": not innovation, but just a lot of money

I have an engineering sample of Nokia 8.3 on the test. It’s funny how the product name is displayed in the specifications. It’s cute.

# E] [o90: ThinkPad X1 Fold; "Sberbank": not innovation, but just a lot of money

So let’s start with the columns. Bluetooth 5.0, 4 hours of battery life, built-in microphone, Nokia said the speakers can be used for group calls. Two speakers can be combined in stereo. It is strange that we are talking only about two columns, that is, it will not work to figure out a multiroom.

Yesterday, in the Best Gadgets of the Month issue, I marveled that Nokia coped with the difficult task of finding an agreeable vegan and skinning it with a vegan leather stand case. Unfortunately, I got it mixed up, and the case, the material of which was called “eco-leather” in Russian (apparently, they decided to spare the feelings of domestic vegans), is intended only for Nokia 3.4. This flip case with credit card compartment not only protects the case and screen, but also acts as a stand when watching videos. It was not possible to find a clear picture, but the cover is about the same.

# E] [o90: ThinkPad X1 Fold; "Sberbank": not innovation, but just a lot of money

Also presented headphones Nokia Power Earbuds Lite. The headphone chips are graphene drivers with a diameter of 6 mm and a total playing time (thanks to recharging in a case) up to 35 hours, and on a single charge up to 5 hours. However, I decided to talk about the “ears”, since they are protected against water ingress in accordance with the IPX7 standard – up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. Nokia suggests dancing in the rain. I’m interested in what happens if you put on headphones under the pool cap and swim. Will they survive or not? As they will be available for testing, I will definitely try. If they break, I will say that the defective ones were sent, and I just danced in the rain! The price is unknown, but something in the region of 5 thousand rubles (if the ruble does not sink yet)

Price – 9 rubles for 990/2 GB and 32 rubles for 10/990 GB. The apparatus is in my hands. A beautiful matte polycarbonate body, a smart decent screen, but no NFC, questions to the camera, no Wi-Fi 3 GHz. If you ask why we are wasting time, then the answer is that this smartphone will receive an update to Android 64 and Android 5, not counting security patches. Given the overall quality, there is a suspicion that such a smartphone is suitable for companies to give out to employees. I bought an inexpensive product and received 11 years of full support.

Price – 13 rubles. Visually, this smartphone is my favorite. But let’s be honest, the price is past the market in which Xiaomi and realme operate. The chipset is confusing. Like the Nokia 990, the smartphone will receive Android 2.4, 11 and 12 years of support.

An extremely pleasant and smart smartphone that you enjoy working with. The Snapdragon 765G chipset is a very good solution. It is difficult to visually find differences in operation from the flagship 800 series. Everything flies.

The main advantage of a smartphone is a 5G modem that works all over the world. Even at the presentation in March, Nokia gave an example: a 5G user in the UK, arriving in the US, will face problems and will not be able to use local 5G. Quite frankly, not a good time to launch a smartphone. There is no 5G in Russia, and the world is closed, you don’t even fly to test it.

About HMD Connect Pro and Nokia positioning

One of the main Nokia announcements passes by Russia: HMD Connect Pro – a global data roaming service for corporate users. The service is designed to control traffic consumption and protect transmitted data while in roaming. All the most important functions are provided – centralized control over the use of the SIM card, data protection from external threats, as well as diagnostics and solution of emerging problems in real time. HMD Connect Pro operates on 600 networks in 160 countries.

I can assume that the smartphones presented did not excite your sophisticated taste too much. But it is quite likely that the devices will be appreciated by corporate users. It is becoming obvious that Nokia is turning more and more towards business solutions that are less interesting to ordinary customers. The main advantages of smartphones are not Scandinavian design, screens or cameras. It’s all just on the level. But regular security updates, new versions of Android, and the fact that smartphones are included in the Android enterprise recommended shortlist will clearly generate interest. Android enterprise is a business solution. For example, you can roll out updates to everyone at the same time or install applications, block cameras when people are in certain areas, create work and home profiles on smartphones, etc.

If you look at the current list of Android enterprise, Nokia looks pretty good there against the background of Motorola, Oppo, LG and little-known brands. Of the living competitors there are OnePlus and Motorola flagships. Samsung is not listed.

The power of money and copy-paste from Sberbank

Only the lazy did not speak about the conference “SberConf-2020” last week. I sketched a couple of thoughts after the presentation and want to share.

First, why SberConf? Conference – this is reports, discussions, round tables, work in sections. Sberbank just had a product presentation. It is likely that they spied that the same Apple has a WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), and decided to repeat it. But Apple has just a real conference, after the title presentation, thematic events for developers begin, which last for several days. And this year, despite the pandemic, everything was the same, only in an online format. And after the Sberbank conference, only bloggers and telegram channels began to tell how Sberbank got prettier. Maybe next year there will be something?

In terms of aspirations and services, Sberbank’s presentation is interesting. But in terms of presentation, it turned out to be nonsense and porridge. And when watching, there was a feeling of shame every minute. This kind of presentation would have been appropriate in the mid-90s, but awkward in 2020.

One of the most important things when communicating with an audience is honesty and sincerity, because nothing makes people more angry than the feeling of being “staged.” It is for this reason that Bill Gates launched Windows 98 on stage, presenting the first iPhone, Steve Jobs demanded that all demonstrations take place live on stage, and not in the form of a recording, and Elon Musk rolled out his pickup on the podium and, proving the strength of the glasses, threw them an iron core. At the same time, entrepreneurs were aware of the risk and took it. Windows froze and the Cybertruck’s glass cracked. In a sense, it dealt a blow to the image, but, on the other hand, it was priceless, as it showed that everything was fair, no set-up.

Sberbank followed the worst possible scenario. Celebrities with fictional dialogues set against a CG background. I won’t joke about Boyarsky, but no less terrible dialogue with the singer Dima Bilan, who says that he does not have time to listen to music, and is surprised to the depths of his soul when he learns that there is “SberSound” and that you can listen to music on a treadmill track! The singer’s surprise is understandable. On his Instagram, he shares screenshots of playlists from Apple Music.

However, do not forget that Sberbank chose the time at 10 am for an online presentation for a reason. Obviously, Sberbank has copied the approach of Western IT companies that hold events in the morning. But I see another option. The broadcast was also carried out on the Rossiya24 TV channel, surrounded by such Russian series as “Gadfly” (3rd episode), “Greetings from Katyusha” (2nd episode) and “Sea Devils. Tornado 3 “(1st and 2nd series). Accordingly, for the target audience, accustomed to watching such masterpieces, SberConf-2020 looked quite organic. Both the plot and the level of the acting fit into their concept of the universe. The only trouble is that such an audience is hardly interested in the presented solutions.

Should we expect success?

Recently, in a presentation about Apple, I talked about how the company has gradually expanded the functionality of its gadgets over the years, allowing people to get used to it. Each category of products and services has its own presentation. The reason is that if you dump an abundance of products and services on people, then everything in their heads will mix into a mess and it is easy to lose attention.

Sberbank presented not just a lot, but a lot of different products. There are both for business and for individuals, and subscriptions, and voice assistants with electronics, and its own payment system, and a service for fast delivery of parcels.

It is interesting that German Gref has been heading Sberbank since the end of 2007, that is, for almost 13 years. Someone says that he did a titanic job. I get the impression that Sberbank is his hobby, with which he plays with his interest. Wylsacom has released several videos dedicated to Sberbank, and in one of them it mentions that all devices (set-top box, voice assistant, etc.) were created in 15 months. I have a suspicion that not only devices and web platforms were created in 15 months, but the whole idea of the ecosystem in general. That is, what other companies have been pursuing for years, Sberbank simply decided to vacuum and copy.

Copying is good. It’s bad that it turns out that the previous 10 years, under the leadership of German Gref, Sberbank lived according to the “where the card was opened, go there.” By the way, the scheme is still fluttering (see the caption to the picture below).

# E] [o90: ThinkPad X1 Fold; "Sberbank": not innovation, but just a lot of money

I rarely use Sberbank, and yesterday I noticed that one card had expired in May. I wanted to transfer a pretty penny to a working card, and hide the expired one. You can’t, although both cards are visible in the application. No, you have to go to the office. I haven’t walked yet, but I will definitely go. I’ll go to the new one on Tsvetnoy Boulevard to drink coffee. Then I’ll tell you about my impressions

However, such abrupt and radical transformations, in fact, at the last moment, show that the bank, relatively speaking, is rushing about without a strategy, but doing hype: ecosystems and subscriptions are the most fashionable trend of recent years? We do it!

The situation with Sberbank reminded me of a browser battle. Remember, at the dawn of the Internet, 80% of the market was held by Netscape, which was quickly outplayed by Internet Explorer, which lost its 80% of the market to Google Chrome (which is now under the quite successful attack of Microsoft Edge). How did the defeat happen? The attacking companies chose the right strategy. They did not try to outplay a competitor on his territory, but, on the contrary, transferred the hostilities to themselves. This is how Internet Explorer won out because Microsoft copied all the Netscape features and incorporated IE into Windows. Google Chrome, introduced in 2008, won because it also pulled the enemy onto its battlefield, which at that time, thanks to the development of gadgets, became the Internet. Now Microsoft is again trying to crank up the old trick, including Microsoft Edge Chromium by default in Windows (and claims have accumulated against Chrome). By the way, it turns out quite successfully, I noticed that in the last couple of months I have been using Edge more and more, both in Windows and in smartphones.

Sberbank in the same way is trying to drag the hostilities to its territory of banking services, which are, in fact, necessary for the entire economically active population. You can live without Yandex.Mail, and you cannot avoid reaching an ATM or looking into an online bank. And here Sberbank has total dominance. Almost everyone has a bank card, even if you don’t like the bank, you can’t do it without it.

In any case, movement is better than standing still. But, in my opinion, the emergence of a multifunctional service Sberbank will do more harm than good. The advantage and at the same time the trouble of Sberbank is that it sits on the ready. There is no need to go for money and clients. And given that the government is the main shareholder (50% + 1 share) and the recipient of dividends, this will always be the case.

# E] [o90: ThinkPad X1 Fold; "Sberbank": not innovation, but just a lot of money

Look at the net profit for 2019 from Yandex, Mail.Ru Group and Sberbank. Then look at the lavish presentation, redundant new office designs with touch screens from every crevice. Sber, unlike Yandex and Mail.Ru, spends, not counting. Sberbank did not offer any innovations or radical novelties, this is a simple copy of existing solutions. Accordingly, when engaged in dumping, a company can simply “sit out” its competitors. And this will have a bad effect on the development of such innovative companies as Yandex, which still try to invent products.

We, as consumers, will probably like Sberbank’s services. The company, especially at the first stage, will actively subsidize everything, but do not forget that Sberbank buys, apparently, the best ready-made solutions that it can reach.
