About the ecosystem
On the eve of the Russian presentation of realme, I was able to personally get acquainted with the upcoming novelties and make a first impression of them. It is worth mentioning some points right away. First of all, the material does not imply a detailed overview, only an acquaintance, some devices will be published a little later on separate texts. Also at the time of this writing, information on the cost of devices is not subject to disclosure, prices and data on the start of sales will be announced on Tuesday during the online launch of the devices.
So, realme enters the Russian market with its ecosystem and first devices. For a relatively young brand, this step is a reflection of the company’s ambitions for the Russian market and is generally perceived as a logical stage of development. Recent reports from Canalys confirm a multiple increase in the share of the company’s smartphone presence in our market, but the leaders are still far from the leaders. Apparently, this moment is intended to compensate for the newly-appeared ecosystem.
Its concept is not distinguished by something revolutionary and hitherto unseen: at the center of the ecosystem is a smartphone with the installed application realme Link, which has recently become available on iOS. After registering and activating an account, four main groups of smart devices (TVs, watches, speakers and headsets) and individual smart accessories are associated with the application. That is, the user is offered something more than just a smartphone, the importance of which as a link between IoT devices is only growing. A similar organizational scheme was proposed by Huawei, except that the main groups of the company are twice as large, and the devices are not represented on our market. Of the ecosystems of products officially present in Russia, the clear leader is Xiaomi, in the catalog of which there are dozens of different devices. Apparently, this particular manufacturer will be the main competitor to the realme ecosystem.
Six new devices are entering our market: two models of toothbrushes, a camera, a scale, a watch and TWS headphones. Let’s get to know each of them in order.
Realme M1 and N1 toothbrushes
Let’s start with devices that do not directly connect to the ecosystem, but are nonetheless included in it. Ultrasonic toothbrushes M1 and N1 have high-capacity batteries, both models use Dupont bristles, which have antibacterial properties due to silver ions. Fading of the bristles will be a kind of indication of the end of the expiration date of the replaceable attachments. As it should be for the class of devices, they are protected according to the IPX7 standard, you can safely wash under water. Both models are available in blue and white, and replacement heads for each will also be available. It would be nice to see in realme Link a link to order such components or, by analogy with other markets, a dedicated application for purchase, although the first option is more convenient.
The realme M1 brush is visually larger and heavier, it has a more powerful motor and 4 operating modes: soft cleaning, standard cleaning, bleaching and polishing. Modes are switched with one touch, just like on the N1.
The model is charged inductively using a complete charging pad. It claims to work from a single charge to 90 days, 5 minutes on the base is enough for two days of operation, while a full charge will take 4,5 hours. In addition to the standard attachment, the kit also includes an attachment for sensitive teeth, a useful option.
The realme N1 model, judging by the packaging, is more budgetary and is positioned as a more universal brush, which is also suitable for children. With a less powerful motor and a more compact form factor, it is fully charged via USB Type-C and lasts up to 130 days on a single charge. For N1, there are three cleaning modes, apparently without polishing, in the kit – a charging cable and one nozzle.
The impression is quite pleasant, not to say that there is some kind of wow-effect, but in everyday life such brushes will show themselves well, primarily due to the confident autonomy, in this aspect the N1 looks even more advantageous. An important factor will also be the availability of nozzles, according to the manufacturer, everything will be in stock.
Realme Smart Cam 360 °
Moving on to more advanced gadgets. The “smart” camera for home monitoring is controlled exclusively through the realme Link app and is always connected to the network, the Micro-USB to USB-A cable and the supplied 10W adapter are responsible for this. The body has a slot for a microSD memory card, it is located under the camera’s eye on a rotating element.
The design is completely familiar to this kind of device: white matte plastic, a black round element with a rotating camera eye, and the mentioned power connector below. If desired, the camera can be hung on the wall; the set includes a special platform and mounts.
When connected, the realme Smart Cam 360 ° provides 110 ° vertical and 360 ° horizontal visibility, as the name suggests. At the same time, there is an option for night vision, the infrared beam is designed for a distance of up to 10 meters. Video is recorded in 1080p resolution, H.265 codec, AES-128 data encryption, TLS1.2. The internal memory of the camera can be expanded with a 128 GB card, the manufacturer says that this is enough for continuous video recording in FHD for 2 weeks. Image noise reduction and flicker correction are provided.
You can save both photos and videos in the application, it will remain in the memory of the paired smartphone. Here you can turn on / off the sound and control the rotation of the camera. The indicator light under the camera peephole turns off, making the device invisible in the dark.
The device is equipped with 4 detection modes: it can respond to sound, to movement, to a person, or to track moving objects. At the same time, thanks to the built-in speaker, you can maintain two-way voice communication with a relative who is left at home, a child in the next room or a pet. If desired, the camera can be networked from three more of the same devices, the so-called multi-channel mode works. A bonus when working with several cameras will be the relay of the Wi-Fi signal, they will be a kind of repeaters that amplify the signal of the access point.
Despite the number of functions, it is not difficult to control realme Smart Cam 360 °, such a device, in fact, can act as a camera itself or a baby monitor. Sound and images are transmitted with a slight delay (about two seconds), possibly due to the local Wi-Fi network. The impression from the camera is pleasant, even though such devices have not yet been encountered in my everyday life.
Realme Smart Scale
The easiest device to use. I took it out of the box, checked the presence of four AAA batteries, and that’s it, you can use it. After the weight is on the scales, the built-in white LED screen, covered with 6 mm thick tempered glass, lights up. It has built-in stainless steel sensors, through which the readings are read.
The scale measures 16 body parameters, ranging from weight and heart rate to biological age. It is clear that all these parameters should not be taken for one hundred percent truth, because the device does not claim to be a medical device, but they can give some general picture. For example, in my case, realme Smart Scale secretly whispered that it would be time to lose at least 5 kilograms, which is quite true after 10 months at a remote work.
The application allows the creation of various profiles for several users, the readings from the scales are sent to a smartphone, where they can be assigned to one or another user. Synchronization is instant, the connection protocol is Bluetooth 5.0. The device weighs a little over 1,7 kg, and the batteries can last for a year. realme Smart Scale will be supplied in white and blue colors, look minimalist, with a certain degree of care you can give them as a gift to your family or just acquaintances.
Realme watch S
In the summer, I visited the realme Watch fitness tracker, but now the idea has evolved into a full-fledged watch. They don’t have their own OS, and it’s a pity, it would be nice to see a truly “smart” watch from realme, because Oppo has done quite well, judging by the reviews. The watch uses a round IPS-display with a diagonal of 1.3 ”, a resolution of 360×360 pixels and a protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It has rounded edges and an oleophobic coating. They look impressive on the arm, they sit perfectly on my middle arm, neither more nor less, I would not do the body. The display brightness reaches 600 nits, which is enough for me to comfortably interact with the realme Watch S.
The weight of the watch with the strap is 48 grams, it ceases to be felt literally ten minutes after you start wearing it. The dimensions of the watch will make it possible to wear them under loose-fitting outerwear and even under a shirt. From the point of view of design, there is nothing to complain about, everything is strict and solid, although I would dilute the black color with an orange strap, which is not yet officially available in Russia.
I will definitely discuss the functions of the watch in more detail in a separate review, but here is almost everything you need from such a device: tracking workouts in 16 modes, monitoring sleep, receiving notifications, controlling the camera, music and incoming calls, a pulse oximeter and others. 15 days of battery life and IP68 protection add pluses to the realme Watch S. But the AMOLED display and NFC, apparently, remained the Watch S Pro models, it is not yet clear whether it will appear in Russia. I will make my final opinion about the model after testing, I will definitely tell about it in the review.
realme Buds Air Pro
Definitely the most interesting novelty for me personally. Yes, I still force myself to get used to the TWS format, and in the concept of work from home it is gradually becoming the main one. At least, most of the time I use just such models, partly because there are many models on the test now, I am preparing a small digest. It was all the more interesting for me to get acquainted with the ANC version of wireless headphones from realme, this technology is becoming more and more popular, including for TWS models.
At first glance, realme Buds Air Pro liked the minimalistic design: the headphones themselves are completely black and do not have any identification marks, not even the L and R markings. The case echoes them: on its glossy black coating there is only a modest manufacturer’s logo. Power connector – Type-C, promise up to 6 hours of operation on a single charge and up to 25 hours – with a case, fast charging is available. There are three listening modes available for headphones: noise cancellation, transparency, and no add-on mode for a quiet environment.
I would describe the first listening impressions as positive. Noise cancellation works correctly, control of clicks too, albeit not the most convenient concept, in my opinion. The fit in the ears is as reliable as possible, there is still nothing to complain about in ergonomics, there is IPX4 protection. I will test intensively and will definitely write about the realme Buds Air Pro separately, apart from the price it is still difficult to draw more specific conclusions.
Conclusion
In my opinion, the devices turned out to be quite successful, many spheres of human life are covered: hygiene, health, safety, sports and music. Again, a lot will depend on price positioning, because all these gadgets on the market are not alone and there are more than enough competitors.
In addition to device launches, another highlight is the launch of a global platform to attract companies to co-create products within the ecosystem. Again, there is nothing new in this, we all know perfectly well the many partners of Xiaomi, in cooperation with which many devices are created. Obviously, in this way realme wants to try to squeeze the position of the “best” brand in its key markets. The task is not an easy one, it is obvious that the company has the resources, no matter how the connection with BBK and colleagues in the shop is denied. As for the time costs, the producers from the Celestial Empire are not afraid of this, they are used to playing not only for the near future, but also for many moves ahead. So it’s up to the price positioning of the devices and the marketing activity around them.
