Introduction

Towards the end of last year, the Honor brand began selling two MagicBook 14/15 laptops in Russia on the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U SoC. In fact, the main difference is the screen: one has a diagonal of 14 inches, and the second has a 15.6-inch matrix. Dimensions and weight are also different, and if you are looking for a compact device, then the MagicBook 14 will be the choice.

Let me remind you that the Honor brand has a MagicBook Pro (HLYL-WFQ9) model, the review of which can be found here. It has a larger screen diagonal, a slightly more efficient processor and a more massive body. The version on Intel and with discrete graphics costs around 100 rubles, on the AMD Ryzen 000 5H – 3550 rubles.

Therefore, at the moment the user has a wide choice: buy a compact 14-inch device with a 15.6-inch screen and a rather large 16.1-inch one. Surprisingly, the MagicBook 14 and 15 cost the same, 59 rubles.

Appearance

Compared to previous laptops from this brand, the design has not undergone any changes. Apparently, Honor found their sweet spot: recognizable appearance, practical materials, ergonomics close to ideal.

I have been actively using the “proshka” for some time, and I liked the convenient arrangement of all the elements. Moving on to the MagicBook 14 and 15 benchmarks, I felt a sense of former comfort, as the devices are very similar. I think for the same reason Apple is not trying to come up with something new in the design of its MacBooks: over the years people have got used to almost every rounding on the device’s case. Things were about the same with smartphones: people received an updated iPhone in terms of “hardware”, but the experience of use remained the same. However, you won’t ride such a chip for a long time.

Coming back to the Honor MagicBook 14/15. The first thing you pay attention to is the size. Even without looking at the specifications, it is noticeable that the MagcBook 15 version is significantly larger than the MagicBook 14. Although, it would seem, the difference between the 14- and 15.6-inches should be minimal.

  • Dimensions MagicBook 14 – 322 × 214 × 15.9 mm, weight – 1.38 kg
  • Dimensions MagicBook 15 – 358 × 230 × 17 mm, 1.5 kg

The edges and logo on the lid are machined with an automatic diamond cutting machine and shine in an azure blue color. This is noticeable in any light source and viewing angle. It seems to be a trifle, but the Pro version looks a little boring without it.

The bodies of the devices are made of metal, except for the insert on the back side near the place where warm air comes out when the processor heats up.

Below there are two rubberized legs and one long one for almost the entire body of the device.

With the connectors, everything is more or less in order: you have the ability to connect power via USB Type-C, there are USB versions 2.0 and 3.0, as well as HDMI 2.0. Yes, of course, I would like to have a slot for a memory card, another USB Type-C connector just in case. But now the time has come when each manufacturer is trying to minimize production costs and get additional benefits. The same Apple, which abandoned the network adapters in the iPhone kits, and the Samsung company distinguished itself with its Galaxy S21 line: the devices will not have power supplies in the kit. A stupid trend, supposedly aimed at improving the ecological situation on our planet. If manufacturers used the same fast charging technologies, then I would understand the meaning of all these manipulations. However, each of the brands is trying to make its own unique battery charging system, so a potential consumer is simply obliged to buy the next newest power adapter: well, because there was SuperMegaCharge 5.0, and here it is already 6.0 …

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard is membrane, island type with a small distance between the keys (2.5 mm). The buttons are 16.5 × 16.5 mm in size. The symbols on the keys are painted in white: the Latin alphabet is slightly larger than the Cyrillic alphabet. The function keys are the same color.

Unlike the MB14, the MB15 lacks backlighting.

The key travel is about two and a half millimeters. Pressing medium hard with locking position and light spring-loaded effect.

The area under the keyboard does not squeeze when pressed, which is good.

It is convenient to type on the keyboard thanks to the even key travel. Also, do not forget that there is room for the hands to the right and left of the touchpad. The MB Pro has even more, plus speakers are located there.

Below the keyboard is a large touchpad: slightly recessed into the body, the dimensions are large – 121×64 mm for the MB14 and 120×72 mm for the MB15, the surface is matte, metal, presses and gestures are supported.

When touched and pressed, the touchpad does not backlash – good.

The power button, combined with the fingerprint scanner, is located on the upper right, and separately from the keyboard. It looks a little strange: a lonely button on an empty space. Looks even dumber in MB15 ?

When you start Windows, you don’t need to enter a password – you just need to touch the power button. The MagicBook Pro has the same feature. Works from any angle.

The original chip of the camera was spied on by the older generation: when you press a special button on top, the camera rises. The solution is cool, but in this position you remove your chin, and you cannot adjust the angle of the camera with the top cover. However, the “security” in this case is maximum!

Displays

I think, even from the name of the devices, it is clear that one laptop has a 14-inch screen diagonal, and the other has a 15-inch (more precisely, 15.6). The frames are thin, this screen looks good.

The matrices here are of the IPS type, the standard resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels, the refresh rate is 60 Hz. The last parameter, as it seems to me, in future laptops will be increased to 144 Hz. Even if you are not going to play, such a high frequency is more comfortable when interacting with the device. As it happens now with smartphones: 90 Hz is no longer something unique, there are gadgets for 20 rubles with such a frequency.

Matrix in the MB15 device from the manufacturer BOE, model TV156FHM-NH1. As far as I understand, the exact same one is in Huawei MateBook D 15. Moreover, the matrix can be bought in Russia for 6 rubles without any problems.

The matrix in MB14 is also from BOE, but the model is called TV140FHM-NH1. But for some reason it already costs 7 rubles.

The maximum brightness is the same at 230 cd / m2. But the temperature is different: MagicBook 14 goes into warm colors, and it is visually more pleasant to look at the MagicBook 15 screen.

The rest of the screens made a good impression on me.

Working hours

The built-in battery of Honor MagicBook 14 is called HB4692Z9ECW-22A, 56 Wh, 7.64 V, 7330 mAh. There are 4 elements in total.

And here we get a strange story: the MB15 simply didn’t have enough room to install a more capacious battery! Do you know why? Because the manufacturer provided a place in the case for the drive, but did not bring out a connector for it. The stupidest situation …

If you strain the devices with office routine (work with documents, a little surfing on the Web, and so on), then the MB14 discharges in about 10-12 hours, and the MB15 “begs for mercy” after 7-8 hours.

It’s better not to talk about games and heavy workload like video coding: MB14 copes with this task in 2 hours and sits down to zero, and MB15 works under such “yoke” for no more than 1.5 hours.

But they charge very quickly: MB14 – in about 1 hour 40 minutes, and MB15 – in 1 hour 20 minutes.

“Iron” component

It uses the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor, which has six Zen 2 cores clocked at 2.3 GHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 4 GHz. In this case, the process technology is 7 nm, which is very good!

The CineBench R23 benchmark shows 5800 pts in MultiCore and 1100 pts in SingleCore.

Both devices are noisy both in business and without business. I liked the nature of the noise better in the MagicBook 15. Perhaps due to the fact that its cooling system is slightly larger.

Honor MagicBook 14 vs 15 review-comparison: the best devices for work and study

Both notebooks are heated at about 40 degrees Celsius. The temperature was measured on the rear panel. The keyboard remains barely warm (no more than 35 degrees).

The 4500U model carries a Radeon RX Vega 6 video processor with a frequency of up to 1500 MHz. Game lovers will, of course, be disappointed, because in Cyberpunk 2077, even in HD resolution, you get 15 fps at best. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla can show you slideshows in 20 fps, my favorite Battlefield V is better – stable 35 fps in HD. But in CS: GO you can play as much as you like, because there the device produces 60 fps even in FullHD at maximum speed.

RAM dual-channel 2 × 4 GB DDR4-2666 (soldered on the board).

The drive in the MagicBook 14 is a 530 GB NVMe Western Digital SN512. The read speed is 1881 MB / s, and the write speed is 1238 MB / s. Not the fastest, but this speed is enough for smooth operation of the device in almost any task.

The MagicBook 15 model uses a different drive – NVMe Lite-On CL1-8D512, but also 512 GB. Its read speed is 1980 MB / s, and its write speed is 1400 MB / s. The result, plus or minus, is the same as that of the MagicBook 14.

As I already told you, the MB15 has a slot for a drive, but you can’t connect it anywhere – there is simply no connector.

Laptops are equipped with the same stereo speakers. They are located on the bottom right and left. Moreover, in the MagicBook 14 they are arranged symmetrically, while in the MagicBook 15 the speaker on the right is higher than the speaker on the left. I did not hear the stereo skew. And again, the fault is the same slot for a useless drive, which took up almost a quarter of the inner part of the case.

Honor MagicBook 14 vs 15 review-comparison: the best devices for work and studyHonor MagicBook 14 vs 15 review-comparison: the best devices for work and study

The volume of the speakers is high, and the quality is quite satisfactory.

Impressions

If I had chosen a laptop for my work, I would have looked closely at the Honor MagicBook 14. It is compact, rather light, its screen is slightly sharper, and the battery life here is clearly higher than in the MagicBook 15 model.

Honor MagicBook 14 vs 15 review-comparison: the best devices for work and study

I also liked the increase in storage capacity (compared to previous Honor laptops) to 512GB. This volume will be enough for almost any purpose. The main thing is that you do not need to save. Disk speed is another matter. It is not high, but if you do not encode video for days and do not compress data, then the speed will be enough for your eyes.

Therefore, I can recommend the Honor MagicBook 14 for purchase – a successful model in all respects.

Write in the comments which laptop models you use yourself and why. Whoever points out the most unusual gadget is great :).
