Huawei MatePad T10s and T8 review - when you're on a budget and you need a tablet

Positioning

This summer, Huawei was on fire, so it saturating the mobile market with tablets of various sizes. Here you can find the most affordable T8, the inexpensive T10s, and even the powerful and cute Honor Pad V6. I will talk about the latter a little later, but today we will talk about the first two.

The device called T8 is ideal for the role of an electronic reader, since its diagonal is only 8 inches, and the price is from 8 rubles. While the T000s can already be used as a full-fledged tablet with all that it implies. The price of “tens” – from 10 rubles, depending on the amount of memory.

Before buying, I strongly advise you to pay attention to the amount of memory, since 8/2 GB is clearly not enough for T16. And in the case of choosing T10s, it is better to take 3/64 GB, and not 2/32 GB. The difference in price is only 2 rubles, and the experience of use will be completely different.

In this article, the main focus will be on the MatePad T10s: here the screen is of high quality, and the sound with Harman Kardon settings, and the presence of EMUI 10.1. Both are equipped with a SIM card slot.

Appearance, buttons and other elements

Stylistically, the tablets are similar. Both are made of metal and glass with minimal plastic inserts, the corners are sloping and the side edges are rounded. But in general, before you are the most typical tablets on Google Android 2010 – 2020, that is, without any prominent details.

Dimensions T10s – 240x159x7.85 mm, T8 – 121x199x8.55 mm. This data was taken from the official website. Note that the manufacturer prefers to follow the “batch line”: the T10s is for landscape use, and the T8 is for vertical use.

The color of the back metal cover is the same: dark blue. Plastic inserts for black signal transmission.

The strangest thing is the protruding cameras. Either it was a tribute to fashion, or it was really difficult to hide the modules under the case cover. The edges of the lenses are sharp, dust and dirt constantly accumulate near them.

By the way, about the soiling. Both models have oleophobic coating. The metal panels get a little dirty, but this is completely uncritical.

The older model weighs 450 grams, the younger – 310 grams. I don’t think it’s worth talking about the T8 being lighter, more convenient and better to use. However, the display is also smaller.

Both gadgets have slots for a nano SIM card. In addition, each has a microSD slot.

Microphones are provided for devices. There is only one in the T10s specs, but there are visually two microphones on the body – both on the upper edge. But the T8 really has the same microphone on top or on the right, depending on how you hold the tablet.

There are power buttons, volume controls, front cameras, 3.5 mm jacks. The older model has two speakers, the younger has one. The microUSB connector for the T8, the USB-C connector for the T10s. And the Huawei MatePad T10s has an indicator that is responsible for various modes.

The assembly of the device raises no questions.

Displays

In the case of the Huawei MatePad T10s tablet, we are dealing with a 10.1-inch screen diagonal. A classic relatively standard display with an aspect ratio of 16:10 (135×217 mm) and a resolution of 1920×1200 pixels (224 PPI). IPS matrix.

But with Huawei MatePad T8, everything is a little simpler: exactly 8 inches diagonal with an aspect of 16:10 (107×172 mm) and a resolution of 1280×800 pixels (188 PPI). The matrix is still IPS.

I don’t like all these numbers, let’s move on to the impressions of the screens. The younger model has quite a good screen with medium brightness. On the street or in the sun it will go blind. Viewing angles without distortion. But you shouldn’t count on quality like Apple iPad. By the way, the T8 does not have a light sensor – you will turn the knobs like in the good old days.

Low resolution? Well, yes, but in real life this is the last thing you pay attention to, since the device has other problems, worse than a low PPI value (hint – only 2 GB of RAM).

Surprisingly, the older model Huawei MatePad T10s has about the same display, only the diagonal is larger. The same viewing angles, the same color rendering. The brightness is quite a bit higher than that of the T8. Therefore, in general, the T10s screen behaves a little better in the light and even more so indoors.

Since IPS matrices are used here, there is no PWM: read comfortably, watch a video, use dark themes and low brightness values of the matrix backlight without consequences for the eyes. True, one should not forget about the deterioration of vision during prolonged reading of information. But that’s another story.

Working hours

The older model is equipped with a 5100 mAh battery. This value is typical even for many smartphones, but here is a tablet. But the T8 has a battery of … 5100 mAh! I was also surprised: I double-checked the information on the official website, specified it in the appendices – everywhere the same value.

However, the situation with the operating time was extremely curious: the T10s video plays for about 12 hours, and the T8 – no more than 8 hours. With games, the difference is even more noticeable: the T10s shows a little over 5 hours of screen luminescence at maximum brightness, while the T8 barely makes it to 3 hours.

By the way, I looked at the Honor Pad V6 in parallel: it took about 3.5 hours to play games, which is also a bit creepy for this kind of tablet.

In general, the T10s worked for me for about a day with 5-6 hours of screen luminescence on automatic brightness, and the T8 gave about 4.5-5 hours. And this is without using SIM cards. With them, energy consumption increased by about 30%.

The Huawei MatePad T8 comes with a 1A AC adapter. It charges the battery indefinitely, so I connected it to 2A adapters. Approximately the same power supply in the T10s bundle, that is, for 10 watts.

Networking opportunities

As you already understood, these models are equipped with slots for SIM cards. Despite the different chips, the devices see LTE with the following bands: 1/3/5/7/8/18/19/20/26/28. It seems to me that being interested in the support of LTE frequencies in tablets in 2020 is so-so. And what, will you change your mind about taking if you do not find some of the frequencies? P-f-f, you might think you have a lot of choice ?

Both gadgets work with Wi-Fi n without any problems and support Bluetooth 5.0, which is very good. Both see GPS, GLONASS, and even BeiDou. The navigation quality is equally good, plus or minus. Therefore, the T8 can be recommended for taxi drivers or those who need precise positioning.

Камеры

Cameras in Android tablets have never been particularly useful or important. Therefore, in this section about them – briefly and to the point.

Huawei T10s and T8 have 5 MP main modules and 2 MP front modules.

I will not comment in detail: the shooting is bad. If you can still capture the desired object during the day, then by the evening you will have to consider the “soap”. Shooting video is also about nothing, but the algorithms on the T10s do a little better with the picture: the dynamic range is wider, and the digital zoom is better.

The front camera is slightly better on the T10s due to the lower contrast ratio.

Memory, chipset and performance

I’m even afraid to measure the speed of memory, as I feel that the numbers will be awful. The T8 scores 3600 MB / s in the RAM test, while the T10s scores 6100 MB / s. All this suggests that this is a super-budget and budget gadgets.

Both tablets in my case were equipped with 32 GB of internal memory. Memory speed in T10s and T8 is approximately 250/100 MB / s.

The older model is equipped with the HiSilicon Kirin 710 chipset, and the younger model is equipped with your “favorite” MediaTek – MT8768. The Huawei MatePad T10s failed the Antutu test, but the MatePad T8 completed it with an anti-record score of 91 points.

In short, the devices are slow, stringy, viscous. There is no other way to describe it. They seem to be digesting something, but very slowly. Once I accidentally took Huawei T6s on the road instead of Honor Pad V10 (I was going in the morning, I did not pay attention to the details). But I found out about it only when I started using it. Just heaven and earth in terms of response speed. The T10s and T8 are designed for watching videos, reading information, and running simple games. But know that all this will happen in slow motion. Personally, these things always annoy me. On the other hand, the price solves all issues, alas.

By the way, do not forget that both Huawei MatePads do not work with Google services. Probably, this is not particularly relevant for tablets, but if you want to play, you will have to remember the skills of installing APK files, which you probably got 10 years ago, tormenting with some Highscreen.

Musical possibilities

The T8 has one speaker and the sound is extremely simple: no bass, no treble. The volume is low.

The Huawei MatePad T10s has two speakers, and everything is very serious here:

Big Amplitude Surround Sound, Harman Kardon Tuning.

In real life, the T10s speakers reproduce melodies cleanly and beautifully, the sound is really spacious. The volume is significantly higher than that of the T8. I think this is the main pleasant feature of the T10s model – watching movies, listening to music, playing games with stereo sound.

Conclusion

I am sure that you will have two main questions: for whom and for what? In fact, everything is very simple. Tablet Huawei MatePad T8 will buy those who use push-button phones or old smartphones with small display diagonals, and the “tablet” is useful for reading e-books or for navigation.

The Huawei MatePad T10s gadget will be of interest to those who want an inexpensive bedside device for video, music, simple games for adequate money. I returned home from the office, had a bite to eat, lay down on my favorite side of the sofa, took out T10s – and went to read the latest news about the situation in Belarus, about the battles between Armenia and Azerbaijan, about the rallies in Kyrgyzstan, or watch an interview on YouTube of Navalny Dudyu, a survivor of Novichok, or play PUBG on minimal settings and listen to “Morgenshtern / Timati – El Problema”.

The main recommendation is not to save on memory when buying tablets!

Up to 20 rubles, it is best to buy the Lenovo Tab M000 Plus. Here you have Helio P10T, 22 GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal memory, and Google services. There are a few more options, but they are all very strange, such as Android 64, Snapdragon 8 processor, and so on. And what to take instead of Huawei MatePad T450 – I don’t even know. Is that Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.

A simple question for readers: Is the era of tablets gone on Google Android?
