Positioning
In the mid-2000s, the name Moto RAZR was associated exclusively with fashion. The thin metal clamshell gave the impression of something different from all the phones that existed on the market back then. That device became a style icon and kept Motorola afloat for several years, postponing the decline of the once great company that created the first cell phone.
Today the Motorola brand is owned by Lenovo, and the company makes various devices, sometimes trying to play on the feeling of nostalgia, just like HMD Global, which exploits the Nokia brand. But times have changed long ago, and in new products you can hardly recognize the former heroes, the market is completely different. In 2019, Moto comes out with the first RAZR with a flexible screen, this is its own attempt at reading a smartphone with such a display. The model turned out to be dubious from all points of view – expensive, with rather stripped-down characteristics. It attracted attention by the fact that it was one of the first devices with a flexible screen. And against the background of the same Galaxy Fold, the price seemed acceptable, but then Samsung’s Z Flip appeared, which offered, plus or minus, the same reading of the form factor, but the smartphone cost less, could do more.
For Moto, the release of such devices is an attempt to remind about itself, to tell that the company is still doing something and it is too early to write it off. Probably, there is something in this, especially since the release of such products really allows us to maintain the skills of engineers at a good level. It is impossible to view the RAZR as something that can be sold in the current market. This is a model for PR stories, for demonstrating opportunities, but not for business at all. Few bought the first RAZR, released in 2019, at $ 1. Today this device is still gathering dust in warehouses, but the price for it was already set at $ 500 (in Europe, the dimension is the same, but in euros). There is no reason to buy the 1 RAZR, it is significantly weaker than the updated model in all aspects, but the main thing is the battery life.
The second device has already turned out to be different, there are almost no reasons to buy it, as before, but it is impossible to deny that it is unusual and surprises others. There is no delight from the uniqueness of the model, rather a surprise that clamshells are still alive. Therefore, the image component of this device is very relative.
There are no official sales of the model in Russia, it is available only on the gray market. Moto fans in the country ended a long time ago (the stewardess was dug out at least three times in the last five years, everyone was tired of it), but the model should be considered for those who want something unusual, have no shortage of money, are ready to experiment with a phone and, if not like it, throw it in the far drawer of the desk. There is probably no other reason to look at the MOTO RAZR 5G, but it is possible that you will find one and share it in the comments.
Design, dimensions, controls
I am sure that you have lost the habit of clamshells, I had about the same feeling. Square body, the model feels like a weighty pebble. Moreover, this feeling increases when you hide the device in a jeans pocket. I’m used to letting go of the device – and it slowly slides into my pocket, but the RAZR, like a stone sinking to the bottom, falls vertically. I constantly thought about what would happen if at some point I missed my pocket. Heavy (192 grams) and small when closed (91.7 x 72.6 x 16 mm).
The device cannot be blamed for the poor performance of the elements, the choice of materials. It feels expensive from the first moment, there is no cheapness in anything. I really like the box the device comes in.
Everything is simple inside, but there is even a case for charging and other accessories.
There is only one drawback of the pencil case: to use it in order to carry a charge with you, somehow not from your hand, the internal compartments are lined with cardboard and will not last long. It can be seen that they saved a little on this.
Let’s go back to the clamshell, I would like to dwell on the materials of the case. The back is made of glass, as well as the top is Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The chassis is made of 7000 series aluminum. The hinges are made of stainless steel.

The glass quickly becomes covered with fingerprints, but this is not the biggest problem. When closed the device is rather small, ergonomics suffers greatly. The halves have a gap, and when you try to open it with one hand, it works! But inevitably, you put your finger on the inner screen, which will damage it over time. Therefore, you need to open this device with both hands, there is no other way. The hinge fixes the halves in the open state, there are simply no intermediate positions.
In the open state we have a rather compact smartphone, it is somewhat reminiscent of the sensations of the Sony Xperia 5 II. The elongated screen, noticeable frames around it, but not very thick (169.2 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm). Strange as it may seem, I like the aesthetics of this device, when open it is somewhat reminiscent of Vertu, perhaps this is the influence of gray. But the fact remains that the device looks like a premium model.

The device has four microphones, which allows you to talk on it without even opening it, although this is inconvenient. Another thing is that by opening a smartphone, you will get a familiar phone, and it is quite comfortable to speak like that.
At the bottom there is a slot for one nanoSIM format SIM card. There is only one speaker in the device, so you should forget about stereo sound.
On the left side is the on / off button, on the right side is the volume rocker. There is no 3.5 mm jack, but the bundle includes an adapter (USB Type C at the bottom).
The fingerprint sensor was placed on the back of the case, you can feel it when closed, but when the device is opened, everything is not so simple, it is in the lower half of the smartphone. And it turns out that the finger has to reach for it. In short, it is inconvenient, but entering the PIN is even more difficult.
Unfortunately, the RAZR’s ergonomics are full of compromises, and you can’t say that this unit is good in everyday use. It’s another matter if you use it as a second, non-primary phone. This phone is well suited for calls when you need a compact model.
External and internal displays
Before we move on to the internal flexible screen, I would like to focus on the external matrix, as it increases the comfort of using the device. To begin with, the screen diagonal is 2.7 inches, it is touch-sensitive (OLED, 4: 3). On the street, the screen remains readable, which is already good.
Obviously, on the external screen you can see the name of the caller, answer or hang up the call.
But besides this, you can call various applications on this screen, for example, a calculator.
Here you can also reply to messages and more. The keyboard is large enough not to miss the keys (one-handed typing is impossible).
And this screen is a fundamental difference from the same Galaxy Z Flip, where the small size of the external screen does not give anything at all, its capabilities are very limited. Here everything is exactly the opposite, but at the same time it turns out that you can not open the device for the sake of the same calculator. This is convenient, but was it necessary to act like this? I don’t know, I have mixed feelings, since the ergonomics are not very good when closed and you can drop the device on the go.
The inner screen has a 21 by 9 geometry, which is typical for those devices that are called compact today. OLED matrix, good quality, nice picture.
Tactilely this is not glass, similar sensations on the Fold of both the first and the second generation. It is possible to damage the screen if something gets between the shutters when closing, the matrix is squeezed through. But with careful handling it is unlikely to happen, the device quickly collects dust in the pocket, it accumulates inside. As well as fingerprints remain on the matrix, you need to constantly wipe it.
For those who like to watch videos, this screen will probably not be the most convenient. For all the rest, its capabilities are definitely enough.
Memory, chipset, performance
The model is built on Snapdragon 765G (7 nm technology), this is not a flagship chipset, but its capabilities will be enough for anyone’s eyes (who will play heavy games on such a model? Nobody). A big plus in balance, working time.
The performance is good, look at the benchmark results.
The model exists only in one version – 8/256 GB, there is no support for memory cards. This option will be enough for most of the eyes from memory.
Communication capabilities
The device has NFC, you can use Google Pay. There are no problems with navigation, as well as with Bluetooth 5.1. 5G support is not important for a Russian user, but it is here.
Battery
Built-in Li-Pol 2800 mAh battery. The first concern is that the device will not work very long with such a battery. But real use shows that the device works quietly all day long (4-5 hours of screen operation).
The increased discharge begins in games, as well as in applications that use fast processor cores, the case heats up noticeably. As a result, the charge is spent noticeably faster.
The full charging time is about 70 minutes, there is no wireless charging.
Camera
The location of the main camera is rather inconvenient, although it is possible to photograph closed. The module is ordinary, there are not enough stars from the sky. This is not the level of the flagships, but rather the middle segment. Look at examples of photos and videos, as well as the interface.

Motorola does not pamper Android add-ons, it is an almost clean interface, without being overloaded with third-party programs or interface finds.
From the multimedia point of view, I liked this device, it plays music well, and, comparing it with classmates of mainly Chinese origin, I prefer it, the sound is reproduced cleaner and better.
The Moto app shows you how you can activate the camera with a wrist movement, how you can record a voice tag to activate your phone, and also introduces night mode.
Individual applications have been redesigned, for example, a gallery or creating multimedia cuts from videos and photos that you receive automatically.
Impressions
The connection quality is good, there are no complaints here. The ringtone volume is average. The ergonomics of the device is far from ideal, but it causes at least surprise among others. The device is well made, it is a premium-level model without any discounts, albeit a rather stupid one, since Moto has no history in this segment on the modern market.
In Russia on the gray market, this device costs 165 thousand rubles, sales are not high. Cause? Exactly the one described above, people do not understand why you have to pay so much for Moto. In the USA, the circumstances are about the same, the price of the device there is 1 dollars.
The RAZR 5G model is a good work on the mistakes of the first device, the high cost of a flexible screen affects the cost price, there are no miracles. Therefore, the price of the model is so high, there is no getting away from it. But for the average consumer, the same Z Flip will be more interesting, it’s a female clamshell for the mass market, and it sells well for its value.
