OnePlus kicked off the event by showing how their employees work from home from different cities and countries around the world. And a company representative said that the whole world is in quarantine and that this could not but affect the organization of presentations. That is why the OnePlus presentation takes place in an empty hall. And after that, OnePlus also spiked competitors. Xiaomi and Huawei online presentations were also held without spectators. However, there was still the sound of applause. OnePlus said that they will not pretend that there are thousands of spectators in the hall, and, on the contrary, will make the most online format with inclusions on webcams. What can I say? Clever girls!
The presentation began by tradition with a listing of what a cool OnePlus 7T smartphone is and how great OnePlus is working, breaking out to the 4th place in the world in the premium smartphone segment. This is absolutely true! With the only exception that the fourth place is the market share of a little less than 2%, and somehow there are no normal competitors there. Well, maybe Xiaomi will shoot. It seems that the company has started to focus on the premium segment.
The OnePlus 7T also won the 2020 Best Smartphone of the Year award from the canceled MWC 2020. The exhibition was canceled, but the awards were announced anyway.
The reason for such success lies in the high-quality engineers, determination and, of course, the community of fans, of which there are as many as 5.5 million. Finally, OnePlus thanked the operator T-Mobile and boasted that it was number 3 in the US 5G smartphone market. However, the logic here is the same as in the passage about # 4 on the premium smartphone market.
However, OnePlus has promised that it will be “all in 5G”, that is, it will invest as much as possible in 5G. And without giving up on such a powerful statement, a promo video of the new OnePlus 8 was immediately launched on the screen. And admiring users around the world eagerly stuck to monitors to see how thin, elegant and stylish the new smartphone is, what a small hole it has on the front cameras and matte back.
OnePlus 8 Pro
Positioning: Ultimate Ultra Premium Flagship. OK. Maybe.
And when the video ended, the host was already holding the device in his hands – OnePlus 8 Pro! One of the epithets with which the smartphone was generously showered was the word “ultra-premium”. This is a very good but dangerous word because it always goes hand in hand with large numbers.
Then we told a little about the design of the new smartphone. When Apple introduced the iPhone with a matte back, I said that this is a new trend and now everyone will do it. And he was wrong! The new Samsungs were glossy. However, OnePlus is great. They trust Apple more in design, which is why the OnePlus 8 Series has chic matte backs made using a special multi-layer technology. I think the deep blue will be a hit! They promise that smartphones will be as pleasant to touch as silk, their coverage is so good.
There will be as many as three colors to choose from. They paid special attention to turquoise, saying that photographs do not convey all the richness of this shade and must be watched live.
Then we moved on to the front of the smartphone, noting the ultra-small hole for the camera. Its diameter is only 3.8 mm.
And then the incredible happened. I even pressed pause and went to drink some water. The new OnePlus 8 Pro has an IP68 rating. How many years the Chinese have ignored this “feature”. And it is also a powerful blow to the gut of Xiaomi, which seems to be the only first-tier Chinese who does not have IP68. Finally!
One of the main features of the smartphone will be a 6,78-inch screen. The host said that this is the most technically advanced screen in the Universe, which will be a “feast for your eyes”! Along the way, the statistics sounded that on average we look at the smartphone screen 2 times a day.
Following were the main characteristics of the screen.
And whipping up excitement, OnePlus said that DisplayMate ranks it as the most highly rated screen in the service’s history. The OnePlus 8 Pro scored top marks in 13 categories, including the highest brightness and peak brightness of an OLED smartphone, the largest color gamut, the highest color fidelity, the least color distortion at an angle and the highest screen resolution visible to the eye. …
And the screen also has 10-bit color, that is, more than a billion colors. Smartphones typically display 60 million colors. And then a yard! Here’s how!
Then they said about the screen frequency of 120 Hz, making a comparison with the iPhone and totally humiliating it. It also has a super-fast touch response of 24.6ms. Firstly, the phone has 240 Hz touch processing, and secondly, a bunch of software blotches (more than 280 pieces), which should make interaction with the screen “smooth and pleasant”.
To ensure that users can always enjoy all the benefits of the screen, OnePlus went for broke and inserted a MEMC chip that will translate content from 24 or 30 frames per second to 120 frames per second. And then a video was shown, in the corner of which it was written that this was just a demo video, not reflecting how it would be in real life. If Steve Jobs watched this presentation, he would probably say: “Losers!” He would have twisted, but he would have shown everything live and from the stage. By the way, read the text about how Jobs presented the iPhone!
When such a cool screen, then there is nothing to wish for, right? Not true! We also need a camera, and as they said from the stage, this is the biggest camera update in OnePlus history.
These are the cameras here:
- 48 MP, f / 1.8, 25mm (wide), 1 / 1.43 ″, 1.12µm, omnidirectional PDAF, Laser AF, OIS, IMX 689 module
- 8 MP, f / 2.4, (tele), 1 / 1.0µm, PDAF, OIS, 3x hybrid zoom
- 48 MP, f / 2.2, 13mm (ultra wide angle), 1 / 2.0 ″, 0.8µm, PDAF, IMX586 module
- 5 MP, f / 2.4, (depth and color filter)
The camera features omnidirectional phase detection autofocus. Another interesting point – OnePlus did not, as many manufacturers do, save on the ultra-wide-angle module. And they immediately compared the quality of photography with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, humiliating it so much that I can’t even think of any reason who in their right mind would buy an iPhone when they have OnePlus!
It will be interesting to watch live and a 5 MP photomodule, which is responsible not only for portrait photography. It also works as a color filter. Now almost every smartphone has the ability to select a filter for shooting in the camera application. The camera in OnePlus 8 Pro, as I understand it, is responsible for ensuring that the selected filters are applied as organically as possible. For example, in the above image, the plants in the foreground are evenly colored for artistic effect.
The smartphone has 3-HDR technology for video shooting. Now you can shoot against the sun without dark faces or white backgrounds. The smartphone makes 3 different pictures and then connects them. And then the iPhone 11 Pro Max was humiliated again. If I had an iPhone, I would immediately spit at it and drown it in the toilet!
The other specs of the OnePlus 8 Pro are on par, but generally typical of 2020 flagships.
Although, of course, it’s worth noting that OnePlus now has wireless charging! 50% in 30 minutes!
This point was even given special attention. This time, OnePlus humiliated not only the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but also the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra for the sake of variety. In half an hour, iPhone charged from scratch by 22%, Samsung by 35%, and OnePlus by 51%.
After 30 minutes
A separate block was devoted to stories about the optimization of the OxygenOS shell. The most interesting thing here is that OnePlus is working closely with Google. The OnePlus 8 is likely to be the first smartphones after the Google Pixel to support the Google Stadia gaming streaming service.
Positioning: compact flagship. True? Not! This is marketing!
Many people want a compact smartphone, but no one wants to sacrifice performance! OnePlus 8 is the answer to your prayers!
In fact, it’s not like that. And that’s just positioning. The presenter from the stage made a typical comparison with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11. Apple has never been famous for its ability to make compact smartphones. And the OnePlus 8 is compact only against the background of Apple. It has a 6,55-inch screen and is almost the same size as the Galaxy S20 + (6,7-inch) and weighs 180 grams.
The design of the OnePlus 8 is typically shiny and iridescent. And the screen, of course, is not so ultra-premium.
The OnePlus 8 cameras are also underwhelming. The device has 3 photomodules, the last of which is a nominal macro camera. Its characteristics were not even indicated, but this is a typical 2 MP.
Other specifications are similar to the OnePlus 8 Pro, but the battery is slightly smaller, RAM is not 12 GB, but 8 GB. The screen is not 120Hz, but 90Hz, and no 240Hz touch processing.

The presentation left mixed impressions. Firstly, it’s curious why the official specifications do not indicate IP68 protection on the website. The promotional materials write that IP68 will protect the smartphone from splashes. The younger version has no water protection. However, the OnePlus 8, with its ridiculous positioning as a compact flagship weighing 180g, is ridiculous. Usual weight and dimensions.
OnePlus 8 Pro is a very interesting smartphone. But in order to fully appreciate it, you need to watch it live, because we have already heard marketing slogans about the eyes feasting on screens more than once. I can’t say anything about the price. $ 900 at the new rate is 65 thousand, and at the old rate – 55-56 thousand rubles. Would you buy?
