The Chinese company OPPO, which belongs to BBK Electronics, brought three models of its new TWS headphones to Russia at the end of the year: Enco W11, Enco W31 and Enco W51. Our test turned out to be the middle model, which is distinguished by active noise cancellation during a call, while the older one has noise reduction available during listening, and the younger one is completely deprived of this opportunity.
The headphones are delivered in a small white box, in which, in addition to the headphones themselves in the case, you can find a short Type-C to USB A cable, two pairs of replaceable ear pads of small and large sizes, the middle ones are already on the headphones, and some waste paper. Our first acquaintance with the Enco W31 did not start very well: when we unpacked a completely new headset, it turned out that the left earpiece did not work for it. Sadly, of course, no one is immune from marriage, so we just got a replacement sample.
The case for storing and recharging the headphones is round in shape, quite compact, made of high-quality plastic with a rough texture on the outside and smooth on the inside. The case is very pleasant to hold in your hands, but it is almost impossible to open or close it with one hand; during the experiments, the “washer” tried to fly out of the hands. So we discard pride and open the case with both hands, there are no longer any problems here. But, unfortunately, the lid hinges are not spring-loaded, and the magnetic lock is rather weak, so there is no emotion when opening / closing the case, as, for example, in the case of Apple AirPods or the same Jabra Elite 75t, the cases of which can be “clicked” endlessly. In addition, the open lid of the Enco W31 case is noticeably loose. At first I attributed it to the features of the shape and design, but then the LG TONE Free FN6 TWS headphones came to me, which are also supplied in a round case, and the LG cover does not play at all, so the OPPO designers simply did not work out this point. The weight of the earbuds in the charging case is small, only 50 grams, so you can safely carry it in your clothes pocket, and it will not burden you with its dimensions.
The shape of the headphones is such a symbiosis of Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro, although it is quite difficult to accuse the OPPO designers of copying here, the headphones still look more like an independent product. In the case, each earphone has its own place, so you can’t miss and swap them. They magnetize well in the case and will not fall out when you open it. OPPO Enco W31 has IP54 dust and moisture protection, so, in theory, they are suitable for training, although, in my opinion, their format for sports is not the most suitable. The fit of the headphones is comfortable and provides good isolation, medium ear cushions fit me perfectly, but as I said above, there are also small and large ear tips in the kit, so you can find the right ones.
To connect the headphones to the device, you need to open the case, press and hold a single button for a while until the device enters pairing mode, which will be informed by the light indicator. On some OPPO smartphones with ColorOS 7.0, but for some reason not on all, when connected, a beautiful animation will be displayed on the screen, which also displays the charge of the headphones and the case, while the rest will have to be content with standard Android OS solutions, which is not so beautiful, but also informative. The charge of the headphones and the case can only be found on a smartphone, there is no battery level indicator in the case.
It’s a pity, but Enco W31 does not have support for Multipoint technology for connecting to several devices, connection is possible with only one device, and when connected to another, the synchronization procedure must be repeated. As for the connection, the headset supports Bluetooth 5.0, the connection to all smartphones has always remained stable, and the playback delay is minimal, well, at least I watched a couple of editions of the “Editorial” on YouTube in the subway and did not notice much out of sync.
The headphones work, according to the manufacturer, in the music playback mode for 3.5 hours, in total with recharging in the case the operating time is 15 hours. The real battery life is roughly the same as stated by the manufacturer, maybe slightly downward, but only slightly. The earbuds themselves contain 25 mAh lithium-ion batteries, and the case contains a 350 mAh battery. Recharging is carried out in a case with a Type-C connector, and a full charge takes about 2.5 hours.
The earbuds have built-in sensors that pause playback when removed from your ear and automatically resume when you put them back in. Touch control, the main one is on the right earpiece, and the sound mode is switched from the left. During the tests, I did not notice any features related to the control, but, however, I did not wear a hood and a hat at that time, so, perhaps, now, with the arrival of cold weather, random operations may occur, since the touch control on the headphones sensitive enough.
OPPO Enco W31 sound, in my opinion, flat, when listening to my favorite tracks I lacked volume and saturation, as well as bass. The latter is a little strange, since the headphones have two modes “Balanced Mode” and “Rich Bass Mode”, but either this function did not work for me, or it was implemented this way, but I lacked bass in both cases. The OPPO Enco W31 TWS earbuds are great for listening to podcasts, watching YouTube videos, or when you just want music to play in the background. But for thoughtful listening to your favorite musical compositions, in my opinion, Enco W31 are not very suitable. Yes, as I said at the beginning of the article, the device has an active noise cancellation system during a call, so the W31 is very good as a headset. Whether it’s on the street or in the office, you can always talk calmly on it, the interlocutor will hear well, as, in general, you are his.
OPPO Enco W31 costs 6 rubles in Russia, this is the average price for this kind of product, and there are a lot of competitors for these headphones. If possible, I would highly recommend listening to the Enco W990 before buying to see how much you are satisfied with the sound quality.
