The ROG Strix line of gaming laptops is a combination of the latest technology and eye-catching looks, and this hero is no exception. Top performance and sophisticated ergonomics with a stylish design – these are the main trump cards of the laptop. The SCAR in the name still refers to a reliable and powerful assault rifle, in past generations this reference was embodied, among other things, in the texture on the laptop case.

At the moment, the ROG Strix Scar is by all accounts the flagship gaming solution in its lineup. Modifications with diagonals of 15.6 and 17.3 inches will be available, versions of models with a larger diagonal have the same characteristics, except for the display frequency: these parameters will be 300 and 144 Hz.

Appearance, ergonomics

Recently, some representatives of the gaming laptop market have outlined a certain trend in terms of design, namely, the rejection of bright gaming elements and lighting in favor of a more universal, strict and solid appearance. This can be explained by the fact that gamers have matured: either they just grew up, or came to games at a conscious age. Gaming laptops have already managed to lose a lot of weight, in their thin profile there is a powerful filling for both games and work, but from a purely aesthetic point of view, not everyone is ready to use a laptop in a conventional office, flooding everything around with rainbow illumination.

In the course of work on the design of the ROG Strix Scar 15, ASUS engineers collaborated with the BMW design bureau, so that this aspect was also taken into account in the test model, but with reservations. With the backlight off, we see a completely calm design: a thin but durable cover with a coating of non-marking matte metal, on it there is an oblique line that continues the cutout under the screen and the glossy Republic of Gamers logo. Fingerprints on the lid linger for a short time, a microfiber napkin helps to quickly remove them, even faster – if you have a special tool at hand. At the rear, between the two panels with cooling grilles, there are HDMI, USB 2.0 and Type-C 3.2 connectors for connecting an external monitor, as well as power. The adjacent laptop panel has a ribbed structure. It hides holes through which cooler air is drawn into the laptop case, which is subsequently expelled through the mentioned grilles below and additional elements on the side panels. Connoisseurs will immediately realize that the case smells like games, but for the general public it is not so obvious. There is a light strip along the perimeter of the lower panel of the laptop, providing large-scale illumination when the backlight is activated. And here, for sure, no one will doubt the nature of a laptop.

We open the laptop, notice a good balance of the lid and the main body by weight and immediately see another sign of a gaming laptop: the text with the mention of Republic of Gamers is located in the upper right corner, partially passes as if behind the keyboard unit and affects about 40% of the case, barely noticeably dividing it visually. From the outside, no one will understand what kind of inscriptions it is. On the left side panel there are 3 USB Type-A ports, a good location, the wires on the right usually get in the way when using the mouse, which in the context of games is seen as a very common scenario. There are no connectors on the right panel.

The plastic of the body willingly collects prints, but they are visible only to the left and right of the touch panel, on the keyboard they are visible only at a certain angle and in good lighting. Above the keyboard there are small white LEDs that indicate the presence of a power connection, work with data, activated airplane mode, to the right of it there is the same ribbed case, but already without holes for air exhaust, but there is a mysterious cutout in the case in the shape of a trapezoid. The Keystone II NFC keyfob is inserted here, it can store user settings and application configurations, the keyfob can also be used as a kind of key to a hidden disk space where the user can store important data. When inserted into the ROG Strix Scar, the accessory glows red.

The dimensions of the laptop make it easy to take it into a backpack, however, the massive bundled power supply will complicate the task of carrying it. Unfortunately, charging via Type-C is not provided, only games, only hardcore.

Display, multimedia

A rather weighty chin is located under the laptop screen, but the frames are so thin that there was no place for a webcam, depending on the configuration, it can also be in the box with the laptop as a separate accessory. The color rendition is at a very good level, no highlights were found during testing. From the point of view of ergonomics, the hinges can be noted, they are hidden and when the lid is closed they are retracted into the body.

Review ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 (G532) notebook:

The ROG Strix Scar has a very good screen. First of all, a high refresh rate of 300 Hz and a fast response time decide, these parameters in games are as appropriate as possible, and regardless of the genre, although shooters will benefit a little more from this, the reaction time of the system to commands is very important in them. For example, the dynamic Doom Eternal with such a screen has become even faster and smoother at the same time, no matter how paradoxical it sounds. Still, I would have preferred 17.3 inches, or alternatively, an external widescreen monitor, which is where the freedom to play and work.

The sound in the laptop is pleasant and voluminous, low frequencies are in place, high frequencies do not tend to poke and sand. The volume is more than enough to block the noise of the cooling system fans, there is a margin. For more immersion in the gameplay, I personally prefer to use a headset or just headphones, for them there is a separate mode with virtual spatial sound.

Keyboard, touch pad

Everything here is at the level of previous gaming models from the manufacturer: a pleasant keyboard with a shallow quiet stroke, independent processing of clicks and keyboard backlight settings. There is support for ROG Overstroke technology: it increases the number of actions per minute due to faster key response even before the switch completely lands, good functionality for gamers.

The laptop on / off key is located separately, on the top left is a panel with multimedia keys, on the right is a vertical block with PgUp, PgDn, Home, End and PrtSc keys, this move will be appreciated by those who like working with text. The layout is as close as possible to a full-fledged one due to the rejection of the digital block. In the case of the test configuration, it moved to the touch panel and is turned on by long pressing the corresponding icon. A full block of numbers is retained in the 17.3-inch model.

The touch panel is of medium size, it works quite standard for this class of devices, switching to the digital panel is quick, in the mode of working with numbers, the cursor control functionality is disabled.

Performance, autonomy, cooling

The ROG Strix Scar in the older configuration that came to the review works on the basis of the Intel Core i15-9HK processor, already familiar from the ROG Zephyrus Duo 10980 review, in conjunction with a powerful NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super graphics card. Here is the already familiar feature of the cooling system:

“The redesigned system of heat removal from the case … is complemented by a new thermal interface: liquid metal is applied to the processor using specially developed equipment and a technical process, which allows increasing the efficiency of heat transfer. This solution came from the ROG Mothership and will be used in all notebooks in the lineup based on the tenth generation of Intel processors. It should be understood that even the most advanced cooling system does not mean the absence of heating, in this case it is also there, but hands will not feel it when playing games and working with resource-demanding software … “

There are no complaints about performance, and in the case of devices of this level, everything is up to par. I’m not tired of being delighted with RTX, how much this technology improves the visual part of games, especially since it uses a video card without a Max-Q console, albeit not a 2080 Super, but also quite worthy of a 2070 Super. It is a pleasure to play, it is dangerously addictive.

Game Testing (FHD):

  • Shadow of Tomb Raider: 117 fps (Hairworks on).
  • Doom Eternal: 176 fps (max graphics quality, Vulkan)
  • Wolfenstein: Youngblood: 156 fps (maximum graphics quality).

  • Fortnite: 101 fps (Epic quality)
  • Apex Legends: 121 fps (Very High settings).
  • Battlefield V: 73 fps (DX 12 and DXR on, maximum definition), 82 fps (maximum graphics quality, DXR off)

Let’s start with the fact that the cost of the test configuration is still unknown. But it is clear that by the totality of characteristics in the indicated price range, it is difficult to find a similar option. Yes, there is an MSI GS 66 Stealth in the same configuration, but it costs around 290 rubles. If we relax the dropout conditions and look at laptops with a lower screen frequency, then analogs on the same processor, with less RAM and permanent memory, for example, the MSI GE000 Raider, will start to appear, comparable in cost to the hero of the review. If you step up to the 75 Hz mark, you will find ASUS TUF Gaming A144, Lenovo Legion 15, and Dell G5, it is clear that the processors will be weaker than the ROG Strix Scar 7.

To be honest, such laptops are difficult to describe in the sense that they do not convey the pleasure of the gaming experience. The screen is as responsive as possible, smooth and has a cool color reproduction, the system works perfectly, the cooling system turns the fans with might and main, but on the whole it copes with dignity. A flagship, what can you say, but at the same time such a laptop costs a lot, offering the most advanced components in a beautiful and bright shell.
