Positioning

MobileReview readers know from reviews of other ZenBook devices that these laptops are lightweight, compact, while maintaining durability and performance in work scenarios. Great emphasis is placed on autonomy, because such ultrabooks are often used as work machines for use both in the office and at home, and on the road. In the context of the ZenBook 13, this is, among other things, a small diagonal, as well as an optional screen with lower power consumption.

Review ASUS ZenBook 13 (UX325)

This model year ZenBook 13 continues the trend towards smaller sizes and higher screen-to-body ratios. It reflects familiar features from last year’s model, but it also has some innovations gleaned from the ZenBook 14 and ZenBook 15.

Appearance, ergonomics

Immediately upon first acquaintance, the laptop is perceived as a very small device: it is quite a bit longer and at the same time narrower than A4 sheet. With weight, too, everything is not bad, I still wonder every time how light the laptops have become: the hero of the review weighs a little more than a kilogram. I say hello to the Samsung laptop that has seen a lot and recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, which, with its 15,6 inches, barely fits into my backpack.

The lid of the ultrabook meets the concentric pattern familiar from both laptops and some ASUS smartphones, the center of which is the manufacturer’s logo. The material here is a lightweight, but reliable aluminum alloy, it is glossy and very quickly collects fingerprints on itself, but also parts with them willingly. For all its thinness and lightness, the lid practically does not lend itself to squeezing and twisting, already at this stage the solidity and strength of the laptop is felt. The 13 ZenBook 2020 is military-grade protected with multiple tests for use in extreme computer climates, temperatures, drop tests, shaking tests and more.

The main visual change in the design language of the model is the solution with the keyboard: now it occupies the entire length of the laptop case from edge to edge, leaving very small frames on the left and right. It looks good, as it feels, however, there are a number of controversial points, which will be discussed in the corresponding section. We don’t often talk about connectors, but it’s worth mentioning them here: only one USB Type-A connector is available for connecting peripherals, but there are as many as two Type-C connectors through which you can both charge a laptop (supported by PowerDellivery) and connect an external monitor. The relatively small number of ports is probably a sacrifice for the sake of a thin profile, less than 15 mm. The next frontier, apparently, will approach 1 cm.

Screen, multimedia

The ASUS ZenBook 13 does not have the brightest IPS display. The declared color gamut as a whole in terms of values is close to 100% on the sRGB scale. The color reproduction is as calm and natural as possible, those who wish can select the desired color temperature in the MyASUS application. A feature of the display in the test sample is the minimum power consumption at the level of 1 W, which in theory should have a positive effect on autonomy, this is also confirmed in practice. On the sides of the screen are surrounded by thin frames, less than 3 mm, the top frame is slightly thicker, it houses a webcam. The image from the display is readable with confidence, the viewing angles are wide, I liked that there is practically no glare on the display, it is convenient to use in sunny days. The model also uses the ErgoLift hinge, which lifts the case off the surface to allow warm air to escape and facilitate text entry.

The musical component is handled by a system that has been calibrated by ASUS specialists with the participation and certification of Harman / Kardon engineers. The system is familiar from many models: two speakers are brought out to the beveled edges of the lower part of the case, the sound resonates with the surface on which it stands, plus there is additional reinforcement inside the case. The sound volume is not too high, its maximum level is enough to block the sound of a working cooling system, but it is more comfortable to listen to it with headphones, since there is support for Bluetooth 5.0. But wired headphones will have to be connected via an adapter, there is no headphone jack.

Keyboard, touch pad

The new keyboard design extends the full length of the ASUS ZenBook 13 to make the letter keys larger and have more space between them. The three-level backlight has not gone anywhere, the stroke of the keys themselves remained the same quiet, but its depth increased, it is pleasant to type on the keyboard, I liked using the rightmost vertical row of keys to quickly move left and right along the line and up and down the page. As I already said, there was a fly in the ointment:

  • The on / off button is located in the general group of keys and differs only in the LED and can be accidentally pressed.
  • The “backspace” and “delete” keys are next to each other, sometimes you can confuse them.
  • The button responsible for entering the letter “e” suffered the most unfairly, it is narrow and small, which is why typos often occur. It is clear that no infringement of the Russian language occurs, but I did not particularly like this decision.

I would rate the keyboard 8 out of 10, after all, the large size of the keys is convenient to use, and the quiet switches will help you work at night at home without the risk of waking up the household.

A large and wide touchpad with a moderately smooth surface is located exactly in the center of the laptop case, a standard input element with adequate performance and gesture recognition. As an option, other versions of the laptop have a NumberPad 2.0 screen built into the touch panel, which duplicates the digital block; it is useful for those who often work with numbers.

Performance, autonomy, cooling

Everything is expected and standard here: the tenth generation Intel Core i7 processor demonstrates confident results in office applications, a browser, and undemanding applications. A bundle of such a processor, 16 GB of fast RAM and integrated Intel Iris graphics, is quite enough for casual gaming sessions in simple puzzles, you can also aim at old shooters, if, of course, you are ready for games on such a diagonal. Thus, a test 4K video length of 90 seconds was converted by Handbrake to Full HD in a little over 3 minutes. For “heavy” applications and more modern games, it is better to choose a model with a more advanced video card. No problems with cooling were noticed, the laptop heating under load is felt by itself, even if there are no critical values for temperature.

When you turn on the power-saving mode, turn off the keyboard backlight and lower the screen brightness, you can get 22 hours of battery life, the result is not bad, of course, if you call such use comfortable. It is convenient that charging is carried out via Type-C, you can take one charger with you for all devices: smartphone, laptop, headphones, etc. Support for fast charging allows you to charge the battery from 0% to 40% in 30 minutes.

Benchmarks:

  • Geekbench 5: single-core 1163 / multi-core 4224
  • Cinebench R20: CPU – 1386 cb, single-core mode – 403 cb
  • PCmark 10: 4055 (total 8394, productivity 6608, digital content creation 3263)
  • 3DMark: Night Raid 8581, Sky Diver 7902
  • CrystalDIskMark: 3029/1487 Read / Write

In addition to MyASUS, the system is preinstalled with the Link to MyASUS application, which I wrote about in my ExpertBook review:

“For those cases when it is necessary to always be in touch, but a specific situation (meeting, negotiations, etc.) does not allow getting the phone, the application has the Link to MyASUS function, which allows you to link a smartphone to a laptop. Pairing requires the presence of the app of the same name installed on the smartphone and the connection of both devices to the same Wi-Fi network. After connecting, in addition to quickly exchanging links and files, it will be possible to duplicate the smartphone screen on the laptop screen and control the smartphone directly through the PC interface: use any applications and edit settings, make calls through the laptop speakers and respond to incoming messages in a pop-up window. Also, a smartphone can be made a second display and put on it a separate window with information or application data. Remote access to PC files will be available from a paired smartphone … “

Competitors, results, impressions

Several models can be distinguished as competitors in the indicated price range from 62 to 85 thousand rubles: HP ProBook 430 G7, ASUS ZenBook 13 of the previous generation, as well as models of the ThinkBook 13s and ThinkPad L13 lines from Lenovo. With similar characteristics in the top versions of these models, a processor with a higher starting and maximum frequency is used, there is also a headphone jack, but at the same time, laptops weigh almost 400 grams more.

The following aspects can be safely entered into the asset of ASUS ZenBook:

  • Miniature and weight of 1 kilogram
  • MIL-STD 810G Immunity
  • Confident autonomy and performance in most tasks
  • Comfortable keyboard with a spacious layout (albeit not without complaints)
  • Type-C charging, I used smartphone charging
  • Optional NumberPad, user-friendly functionality

Of the minuses, I would single out a limited number of ports, which was cut for the sake of a thin and light form factor, as well as a relatively small headroom for the volume of regular speakers.

Review ASUS ZenBook 13 (UX325)

In my opinion, the new keyboard solution is not bad, but there is something to rework and it will be quite good. The laptop left a pleasant impression; during testing, I did not reveal any critical negative aspects for myself. An important financial aspect is also present here, however, the purchase of such a laptop will not justify itself immediately, but only after a certain time, when standard ultrabooks without protection from external influences begin to lose their gloss, ASUS ZenBook 13 will most likely look and work much better.
