Positioning
This month, Huawei’s new smartphones are on sale – the Y8p and Y6p. As usual for this brand, device positioning is very blurry.
However, the manufacturer claims that the Y series was created for devices with a large battery capacity. Actually it is so: the Y8p uses a 4000 mAh battery, and the Y6p uses a 5000 mAh battery.
Both smartphones are equipped with triple cameras: main, wide-angle and background blur. Everything is as it should be for a modern device.
Gadget Y8p – slim, stylish, youthful with an OLED screen; Y6p – large, heavy with an IPS-matrix screen. Both work in 4G and Bluetooth 5.0, and are equipped with an NFC chip. Actually, here’s what you need to know briefly about new products.
In this article I will talk more about the Y8p, since the Y6p seemed boring to me and does not deserve a separate review. Nevertheless, maybe it will be interesting to someone in terms of comparison with a slightly more expensive model.
Smartphone Huawei Y8p costs 17 rubles, and Y000p – 6 rubles. On the official website, each of them is offered a gift or a discount on the purchase.
Appearance
The Y6p smartphone is a typical low-cost mobile product: big, thick, plastic, without any design elements – a simple typical Android device. Available in green and black. I had the first one on the review, which is good. Otherwise, my self-isolating sadness would double 🙂
But the Y8p made a positive impression on me. I even made it my main device for the testing period. In this device, you can already trace the notes of a device that is not sold for a penny. Here you have a thin body, and rounded back edges, neat design of cameras, chrome-plated sides.
This device resembles the slightly enlarged Huawei P30. I have been using this particular model for about a year. Even now, it remains relevant: a very compact smartphone, great cameras, high performance and a nice OLED display. By the way, Y8p also has an OLED matrix.
After the large Huawei P40 Pro, Honor 30 Pro Plus, the Y8p seems to be very easy to use. I came to the water, which for me the thickness of the device plays an important role: anything more than 8 mm is already somewhat uncomfortable. Modern smartphones may be relatively thin, but their camera modules are huge.
The Y8p and Y6p are made of plastic. And this is a little frustrating: in just a couple of days, the back panel was covered with minor scratches. Yes, the kit includes a silicone case, but it enlarges the phone and the compact Y8p turns into another monster.
Front panels are protected by glass. The oleophobic coating is, of course, better in the older model. With Y6p, I would not recommend peeling off the protective film, as it is of excellent quality. Plus, save money.
On the right side of the cases: power buttons and volume rocker keys.
Bottom of the Y8p: USB-C microphone and speaker.
Bottom of the Y6p: 3.5 mm, microphone, microUSB and speaker.
Top of the Y8p: 3.5mm and microphone.
Top of the Y6p: an additional microphone for noise cancellation during calls.
On the left, both models have slots for SIM cards and memory cards. In the case of the Y6p, it is not combined, that is, you can put two SIM cards and a separate microSD card.
On the back of smartphones there are three cameras and a flash. In the Y8p, the module protrudes slightly and houses the flash. The Y6p has a fingerprint scanner on the back. Works quickly, no complaints.
And the Y8p fingerprint sensor is located under the screen. The response speed is average, the accuracy is high.
On the front areas of the gadgets there are selfie cameras and speaker speakers. They sound the same plus or minus.
Displays
Huawei Y8P | Huawei Y6P | |
Display | 6,3 inches, 2400 x 1080 pixels, 417 PPI, OLED, aspect ratio, 90% usable area | 6,3 inches, 1600 x 720 pixels, 278 PPI, IPS, aspect ratio, 88% usable area |
I think that everything is clear from the table: the difference in matrices and resolutions is simply huge. As far as I understand, Y8p is almost the first inexpensive device from Huawei, equipped with an OLED screen. There is nothing to tell about the Y6p display – the brightness is 550 cd / m2, the viewing angles are wide, and it hardly fades in the light.
The brightness of the Y8p matrix backlight is 670 cd / m2. It can take on a greenish tint at certain angles.
Despite the fact that the device is not a flagship even close, there is an item in the display settings to reduce flicker. Since I do not see any reason to turn off this item at all, I took the measurements with the function turned on. Let me remind you that the ripple coefficient should not exceed 10-20%.
- 100% brightness – 17% ripple rate
- 70% – 18% CP
- 50% – 19% CP
- 25% – 22% CP
- 1% – 25% CP
In general, it is not bad for such a device, but I would still like less than 10% to 100% brightness. In short, enabling the Flicker Reduction option on the Huawei Y8p will save your eyesight. Well, if you don’t want to put up with this phenomenon at all, buy smartphones with an IPS matrix.
In Y8p settings you can activate AOD. But unlike its expensive counterparts, there is no choice of displaying the clock.

Total: Y6p – a common primitive IPS-matrix with good brightness; The Y8p is an excellent OLED with almost no PWM.
Working hours
Huawei Y8P | Huawei Y6P | |
Battery | 4000 mAh, 5V / 2A power adapter | 5000 mAh, 5V / 2A power adapter |
It would seem that everything is clear – the Y6p won with its 5000 mAh battery. However, the Y8p uses an OLED screen matrix, which means that in some scenarios, the older model will win.
In forward video playback, Huawei Y8p breaks out by a large margin – just over 16 hours at maximum brightness. The Y6p only shows about 10 hours of video.
In games, there is a difference, but not colossal: Y8p shows 5.5 hours, Y6p – 7 hours.
On average, the Y8p screen lasts about 5 hours, and the Y6p screen about 6.5 hours.
At the dacha, Huawei Y8p also used Megafon as a modem for distributing the Internet. Frankly, I thought it would be cooler: as a rule, the speed did not exceed 10 Mbit / s for reception and output. So, in this mode the Y8p worked for about 16 hours. At the same time, the smartphone still received messages from social networks, mail, and so on.
Both gadgets are equipped with a 5V / 2A power adapter. The older model charges in 2.5 hours, while the younger one takes at least 3.5 hours.

I am sometimes asked, they say, why pay more if the characteristics are about the same. For such a case, a comparison of an inexpensive device and a smartphone in the middle price category is suitable.
At my dacha, a modem with a router is installed on the second floor of a new house, and I myself am based in an old house at a distance of about 30 meters. So, the Y6p smartphone simply refused to see the router’s network, so every time I had to go out onto the porch. At the same time, the Y8p felt great in terms of “catching” Wi-Fi: even in the back room the device showed a couple of five divisions. This is a great result. Even the Huawei P40 doesn’t “look for” the network.
In terms of the cellular signal, I did not notice much difference, probably because the base stations are already located nearby.
GLONASS and GPS are slightly more accurate and faster on Huawei Y8p.
Both gadgets are equipped with NFC chips. Alas, as you can imagine, his work is somewhat defective due to the lack of Google Pay. Yes, you can use Wallet, but I don’t trust a third-party developer with my finances a little. Therefore, in the old fashioned way I carry a plastic card with me.
By the way, I couldn’t write down the metro tickets either. I had to use a smartphone with Google services. There was a similar problem with the Huawei P40 Pro.

Before testing the cameras of these devices, it seemed to me that everything was obvious: the Y6p is inexpensive, which means it shoots much worse than the less affordable Y8p. It turned out that it was not at all obvious.
During the day, the main cameras shoot about the same. The post-processing is slightly different6 somewhere a little noisier, somewhere the white balance is slightly different. The detail is about the same, although the modules are completely different. In some cases, the Y6p performed better than the Y8p. Look at the photo with the road and fences on the right and left. Note that the grass on Y6p is more detailed.
At night, the situation also hardly changes. The older model “crushes” the noise more strongly, the younger one uses other algorithms. But both shoot well.
Day:
Night:
Shirik:

But wide-angle lenses are different. The Y6p is equipped with simpler optics. Precisely optics, since the smears around the edges are stronger, but in general the dateization is the same even at night.
A striking difference in selfie cameras. Here the Y8p flaunts in all its glory.
The video for the main cameras is no different. The only thing I would note is the sound. On the Y8p, it is cleaner and louder. Shiriks write differently and not in favor of Y6p. However, the quality is still average there and there.
Total: the main cameras are equally good, the “shirik” is slightly better on the Y8p, it also writes a little better video.
The interface is the same as on all Huawei devices.

The speed of the Y8p RAM is 6600 MB / s – the average result of a gadget for 10 – 000 rubles. The speed of the built-in memory is 12/000 MB / s – a common result, I would like to be closer to 170/170 MB / s or more.
The Y6p’s RAM speed is 3700 MB / s – an extremely low result of the gadget. It corresponds to the apparatus for 5 – 000 rubles. The speed of the built-in memory is higher than that of the Y6p – 000/8 MB / s – normal for a smartphone for 250 rubles.

Platform | HiSilicon Kirin 710F, 12 nm, 8 cores (ARM 4xCortex-A73 2.2 GHz + 4xCortex-A53 1.7 GHz) Mali-G51 MP4 Turbo 3.0 GPU |
MediaTek Helio P22, 12 nm process technology, 8 cores (4 x Cortex-A53 2000 MHz, 4 x Cortex-A53 1500 MHz) PowerVR GE8320 |
The HiSilicon Kirin 710F processor comes from 2018. Such devices as Huawei P smart 2019, Huawei P20 Lite, Honor 9X and others came out on it. From the point of view of normal work with the device, the chip is quite good: it does not heat up, allows you to run simple games at medium settings.
In Antutu, he scores 140 points. I would like more.
The MediaTek Helio P22 processor was released around the same time. It was installed in a huge number of budget-class devices: Alcatel V5, ZTE Blade A7, LG K40, HTC Wildfire X, Sony Xperia L4 and dozens of similar devices.
This model refused to install the Antutu test, citing a syntax error. In general, Huawei Y6p has obvious problems with applications. For example, MX Video Player is not in APKPure, and even if you try to download it somewhere, it says that the system needs the original program.
With Huawei Y8p you will have no less headache. For example, the game Marvel Contest of Champions (on which I run tests of games of all devices) does not start. It was necessary to install programs for scanning the base stations of cellular operators – almost all of them refused to work due to the lack of Google services. Yes, you can download them, but it may not go further.

Briefly about the work of smartphones: the Y6p is “tighter” than the Y8p, but it is also not fast at all, especially when it comes to multitasking.
Musical possibilities
Both smartphones are equipped with one speaker for hands-free output. Model Y6p sounds louder, a slightly wider frequency range is heard. Perhaps this is due to the massiveness of the case: such as the internal space turns into a sound chamber.
The devices are equipped with a 3.5 mm jack. There is no difference here: the volume is high and they sound good. Since the devices have Bluetooth 5.0, you can listen to music at a greater distance with almost no loss. Of course, this requires appropriate “ears”, for example, Huawei Freebuds 3 or harman / kardon Fly (coming soon).
These models have radio.
Impressions
Of course, my favorite is the Huawei Y8p smartphone. I think it reminded me of my beloved Huawei P30 (/articles/2019/huawei-p30.shtml), which is why I appointed Y8p as my main device for a couple of weeks.
The device is beautiful, slim and easy to use. They are really nice to use. The screen here is OLED, so the colors are saturated, there is no PWM (well, or it can affect the eyes in a minimal amount). The cameras for Huawei are as usual good, the battery life is more than adequate.
Naturally, I didn’t like the situation with GMS. The memory speed is frankly slow, even weaker than in the Y6p. The processor is old.
As for the Huawei Y6p, I wouldn’t consider it. Better to save up and take Y8p. The 5000 mAh battery and IPS display do not solve anything now. The Y8p has a 4000 mAh battery, and the device lasts almost twice as long in some scenarios.
Those looking to buy the Huawei Y8p would advise looking towards the Huawei P30 Lite. And those who want to take Huawei Y6p – try Huawei P smart 2019. In some aspects it is easier, but with GMS. However, it’s up to you to decide.
Let me remind you that Y8p will cost 17 rubles, Y000p – 6 rubles.
Traditionally, a question in the studio: how much will you be limited by the lack of Google services, in particular the Play Market? When are you ready to buy a smartphone with Huawei services?
