Last year, I shared my experience with the MateBook X Pro laptop. The link to the material will be below.
I was extremely pleased with the machine: compact, fast, with a gorgeous screen, but with its own specific features.
Later, the MateBook X was presented. Its characteristics are a little simpler: slightly smaller screen diagonal, different processor, no discrete graphics, not 1 TB, but 512 GB drive.
However, the difference in price is only 15 rubles: the “proshka” costs 000 rubles, and the regular version – 130 rubles. Moreover, Pro is sold in two colors, and X – in only one. Weird marketing, but someone will choose the lightest and smallest gadget possible and save some money on the MateBook X.
From my point of view, the device carries an exclusively fashion component. I do not exclude that such gadgets are created to maintain the status of the company: “and we have such cool cars.” In addition, one should not exclude the following moment: top managers from Huawei also need to work on something! Imagine that the head of the mobile department goes to a meeting with an Apple MacBook or some ASUS / Acer / HP … Of course not! He will take with him a really cool MateBook X, thereby showing the company’s capabilities, for example, in front of shareholders. It seems to be a trifle, but the image of a representative in the best light will still remain in the minds of the shareholders: FreeBuds Pro are inserted into the ear as a headset, the Mate 40 Pro smartphone is in the hand, the Watch GT2 Pro is on the wrist, on the MateBook X table. Everything fits together.
I took this story out of my head so that you understand what I want to say.
For me, the Huawei MateBook X turned out to be a very beautiful device for work, which I used with great pleasure.
The manufacturer, creating this model, focused on design. After unpacking, even I was delighted with what I saw: a compact matte light silver ultrabook as thick as a smartphone. The tactile sensations are as pleasant as possible due to the silky paint spraying. That is, despite the fact that the device is made of metal, it feels like a cross between plastic and aluminum.
The exact weight is only 1013 grams. And the dimensions are 284,4 x 13,6 x 206,7 mm. It is a very small, thin and light ultrabook.
When interacting with the device, you get aesthetic pleasure.
The surface of the MateBook X is matte, and no hand marks remain. In general, the body is almost not subject to the appearance of any stains. However, scratches on the lid will still appear over time. They are poorly visible and look like lighter grooves. If you apply something sharp, then an aluminum base will appear under the paint.
In any case, the assembly is excellent, no squeaks, backlash, body punching, crunching when squeezed.
The problem with connectors is here. On the left – USB Type-C for battery charging and 3.5 mm for connecting headphones or a microphone (headset). And on the right is only one USB Type-C port. In the case of the MateBook X, there is physically no place to accommodate any other connectors.
However, in the kit you will find a special adapter from USB Type-C to USB Type-A, another USB-C, HDMI and VGA. Of course, there is not enough slot for a memory card, at least microSD.
The adapter is small, so you can carry it with you even in your pocket. So, just in case. Purchase a similar accessory separately if desired. I have had an Apple-style Ugreen hub for a long time with a bunch of slots and outputs for all occasions. It cost me only 2 rubles. Compared to the price of a laptop, it’s a mere penny, but the utility is high!
Keyboard and Touchpad
The top cover of the laptop opens smoothly and does not drag the lower part of the case. It’s good. The opening angle is approximately 130 degrees.
The keyboard consists of 78 island-type keys, membrane mechanism. The size of each button is 16×16 mm and the travel is about 1.3 mm. There is no digital block.
Functional buttons are flattened, “up” and “down” – even narrower. However, I almost never used them.
Shift keys on both sides of the keyboard are the same, wide. The Enter button is a little shorter, the Backspace is even shorter, but still remains convenient, you don’t miss.
Between the volume up and microphone mute buttons there is a camera that “shows the nose” only when pressed. A typical element of the latest Huawei devices.
The lone power button is located on the upper right – not on the main keyboard assembly. It also has a built-in fingerprint scanner. It works very quickly, without errors.
I liked the keyboard. It’s definitely better than on Honor laptops like the MagicBook 14/15. When typing, the fingers seem to slide over the buttons without touching the neighboring ones. As for the sound, only a pleasant rustling is heard. I have not experienced any problems with this keyboard. She is one of the best in Ultrabooks.
The backlight is present. It is uniform. When you turn off the light or its insufficient amount, it can turn on itself. Brightness is selectable between two levels. Overall, I would like to be brighter. If you look at the keyboard from a slight angle, you can see the LED glow near the function buttons. I think it could be done somehow more accurately. But to see it at regular buttons, you need to look at the buttons at 170 degrees.
The touchpad is long at 120 mm, but rather narrow at 67 mm. The surface feels like glass or very smooth plastic. The slip is average, that is, not like clockwork.
In the design of the touchpad, Huawei has applied a technology called Free Touch. In simple terms, under the surface is a vibration motor of the Taptic Engine type. Each time you press the touchpad, you feel like a physical pressing of your finger into the surface. Moreover, the work area is the entire touchpad.
The tactile sensations are incredibly pleasant. If you’ve ever used a smartphone with this kind of feedback, you know what it is. Physical buttons versus Free Touch are a thing of the past.
Huawei MateBook X and Apple MacBook Air 2012
Before you is a 13-inch excellent quality 3K IPS-matrix JDI LPM130M364C with a resolution of 3000×2000 pixels and a density of 277 PPI, 60 Hz. I’m really looking forward to the massive appearance of screens with a frequency above 60 Hz.
Note that the aspect ratio here is 3: 2, this is not a fancy horizontally stretched screen. For me, this is a big positive moment, since I mainly wrote texts and used a browser on the MateBook X. The screen dimensions are 274×183 mm.
The frames are narrow – 4.5 mm at the top, right and left, and at the bottom – about 10 mm.
The color gamut is close to 100% sRGB, the peak brightness is around 400 cd / m2 (in the X Pro version – 550 cd / m2), the contrast is about 1500: 1. The display is equipped with a touch layer and supports 10 simultaneous touches. I almost never used the technology, since this model is not an ultrabook-transformer. PWM, of course, is not here.
The fonts are all clear, even and not loose, the image is detailed. This is exactly the kind of picture I’m used to on a working 4K monitor. Only my screen is matte, while the MateBook X has a glossy screen, which gives even more clarity.
I would not like to repeat myself, but even here I got great pleasure from using it: all the information seemed to be printed in a glossy magazine in high resolution. Every letter, every picture looks amazing.
The nominal value of the HB30B1W8ECW-31 battery is 42 Wh. Charging time from a standard 65 W AC adapter is just over one and a half hours.
In the “Office” mode, the Huawei MateBook X ultrabook worked just over nine and a half hours. Overall, a good result. The battery sat down under a decent load after two hours. Here I mean video encoding, performance tests.
When playing a video (4K H.264), the battery runs out after 6 hours, but if FullHD, it loads much less – the battery is discharged in 10 hours. The measurements were taken in the “Improved Battery” mode.
I will not dwell here for a long time, because I consider the MateBook X to be an image item, where you will definitely not be launching toys or doing 4K video encoding. There are other laptops for such purposes.
The 5th generation Intel Core-i10210-10U chip lives in the Huawei Ultrabook. In a nutshell: a quad-core Comet Lake processor introduced in 2019, equipped with integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620. This model is manufactured in a 14nm process technology.
Let me remind you that the MateBook X Pro has a 7th generation Intel Core-i10510 10U. There is a difference in processors, but judging by the tests, it is insignificant, however, of course, in favor of the 10510U.
The thing about the MateBook X is that it doesn’t have fans! Unfortunately, in order to disassemble the ultrabook, it is necessary not only to unscrew the screws, but also to peel off the legs on the back of the device. I did not do this, so as not to spoil the appearance of the gadget, since the ultrabook will then go to other reviewers.
Noise, as you can imagine, is completely absent from the MateBook X. And this is extremely unusual for a Windows device.
Nevertheless, the case heats up from below (top left), but not much – around 38 degrees under load.
The MateBook X has 16 GB of RAM: two 8 GB sticks (LPDDR3-2133 MHz, dual-channel mode, soldered on the board). This is enough for comfortable work in the Windows space.
As for the drive, this is a 512 GB NVMe SSD – Toshiba model KXG60ZNV512G. Such a thing costs just over $ 100 on Amazon. You can see the speed of the drive in the screenshot below. It delivers an extremely decent speed!
Also an important parameter in this type of ultrabook. It uses four speakers (one at the edges, the other under the keyboard) located on the back of the case. Some are responsible for low frequencies, others for mids and highs. Controller – Realtek ALC256.
The volume is slightly above average, but the sound is impressive: as if you turned on small high-quality speakers, even the bass is heard. The sound is very clear and pleasant. No rattling, which is good.
I think you already understood from the material that I really liked the Huawei MateBook X. I consider this model exclusively as something fashionable: you have a cool smartphone, headphones, a watch, and now you need to have a cool beautiful ultrabook on Windows. Put it on the table and enjoy the visual component of the device’s design and the amazing picture on the screen. Need some work – please: fast processor, lots of memory, decent drive speed.
Part of the MateBook X will be useful for artists and decorators: a compact gadget with a high screen resolution and accurate colors.
It will be of interest to large bloggers writing scripts for videos. Journalists who choose the most compact Windows Ultrabook.
For video encoding, for more complex tasks, this model is not suitable. In that case, you better look towards the MateBook X Pro.
Naturally, the main competitor should be considered the Apple MacBook Air. The price for the variant with 8 cores and 512 GB storage is 125 rubles. But I deliberately did not compare the MacBook with the MateBook, since those who need a Mac, and without my comparison, will choose a product from Apple. Again we run into different operating systems and ecosystems.
Among Windows ultrabooks there is ASUS Zenbook Flip S: Intel Core i7 1165G7, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, 13.3 inches 3840×2160 pixels. Price – 134 rubles.
Let us know in the comments what you think is the most beautiful laptop ever released.
