Positioning

In the summer of this year, a new model of the Ninebot-Segway electric scooter appeared on the Russian market (I remind you that in 2015 there was a merger of Segway and the private company Ninebot) under the name KickScooter E22.

The novelty is intended primarily for movement over short distances on urban roads with good coverage. I think the main feature of this model is the high engine power, since the scooter is able to withstand a weight of up to 120 kg. And without any speed limits. For example, I rode the KickScooter E22 with my daughter, often rode with a heavy backpack, occasionally even carried heavy parcels from pick-up points (I put them on a scooter and sat on top). Thus, the load on the device reached 110 – 120 kg.

The maximum speed of this model is 22 km / h. It is quite enough to quickly get from home to the metro or from the metro to work. Theoretically, the speed could have been made higher, but it seems to me that the level of safety would have drastically decreased here. So a speed of 20 km / h is optimal for most tasks.

As for the covered distance, I squeezed about 22 km from the E17 model to the maximum in energy-saving mode. In sports mode, it turned out about 12 km. If this distance is not enough for you, then purchase an additional battery. In this case, you can travel up to 45 km.

Of course, Ninebot-Segway has certain nuances, and with a minus sign. We will talk about this and other separately in this article.

While I was reviewing the scooter, its price dropped from 35 rubles to 000 rubles. For this money, the device looks quite attractive.

Appearance, controls

In terms of design, you will not find any special features here: this is a typical urban electric scooter, the body of which is made of durable 6-series aircraft aluminum alloy. The material is rough to the touch, and the color is closer to dark gray interspersed with silvery “pixels”. At a certain angle in the light, they “play” a little.

And the first thing worth highlighting is strength. Adopted anti-loosening technology commonly used in high-speed rails (TFLOCK) to make the scooter more reliable.

Whatever I did with this scooter: I tried to jump off ledges, move along coarse gravel, enter the mud and get out of it at maximum power, accelerate and brake sharply on a wet road, drift on the sand, even get caught in the pouring rain and drive through deep puddles. In general, I tested it so I tested it! Well, since the manufacturer claimed that the Ninebot-Segway KickScooter E22 is very durable, then this is what I checked – durable! For three weeks of active operation, no problems arose. Except that the rear mechanical brake began to creak slightly when hitting bumps or potholes in the asphalt.

You will say that almost all scooters can do this. However, the E22 model is designed for a weight of up to 100 kg, and I loaded it with 100 kg, and 110 kg, and even 120 kg. The last time I transported myself and a bucket of paint with a volume of 20 liters 🙂

The scooter weight is 13 kg. I can’t say that this is a lot, but it’s not a pleasure to drag him up the stairs of the subway passages. I don’t think girls will do this. Therefore, when buying such things, be sure to calculate your strengths due to the weight of the device, try to look somewhere in advance at an electric scooter.

A nice bonus – the scooter is foldable: press the pedal at the bottom of the steering rack and it folds. To reverse the action, press the rear fender and unfold the apparatus. When folded, the Ninebot-Segway does not take up much less space, so I almost never “squeezed” it. By the way, in the shipping box the scooter lay in parts: a steering rack, a steering wheel and wheels with a lower frame.

On the steering wheel there are two rubberized grips, throttle and brake levers, a small screen with a mechanical multifunctional button (on / off, flashlight, travel mode selection). A bell can be attached to the steering wheel. It’s even a little strange to see in a complex electrical device an ordinary “analog” bell of mediocre quality. In the photo it is on the right, but it should be placed on the left, since it is the left hand that will most often be free (the right one squeezes out the gas).

Can I drive the scooter with one hand? It is quite possible, but undesirable: at a speed of 15-20 km / h it is easy to screw up. In the video review, these are the first few seconds: I tried to record a video and drive at the same time.

The throttle and brake levers are plastic, but covered with a rubber layer. In general, there are no particular problems when driving. But after 10-15 minutes, the thumb of the right hand still gets tired of pressing forward.

Another of the design features. The fact is that the levers are made in such a way that they take up a considerable part of the steering wheel. During the trip, you can accidentally fix this very lever with your right hand. In this case (this was rare), when stopping, you take your finger off the gas, press the brake, and your right hand still fixes “forward”, because you, one way or another, hold on to the handle. Then you stop, release the brake, and the scooter starts to pull forward. That is, when you press the gas and the brake at the same time, you brake, but if you release the brake, you continue to pick up speed. It seems logical, but in practice not everything is so convenient.

The screen here is round, protected by plastic. The display shows information about speed, connection with Bluetooth, operating mode, battery charge in the form of 5 bars. Displaying battery data in arbitrary divisions is a stupid decision. Here is an electric scooter, where it is extremely important to understand exactly how much percent of the battery charge is left. For example, when one bar is flashing, it can be 20% or 5%. By 20% you will drive a couple of kilometers, and by 5% you will rush 500 meters and get up. For example, knowing that the battery has 5% left, I can turn on the normal driving mode instead of the sport mode. Of course, you can easily find out the percentages in the application on your smartphone, but you have to stop, get your phone … Well, you get the idea.

There is a hook on the bar a few tens of centimeters from the steering wheel. An additional battery is hung on it. Without it, the hook can be used to carry a backpack, bags or bags. At the dacha, I went to the nearest grocery stores, packed up, hung the packages on a hook (it can withstand about 5 kg) and went home.

Just below the hook there is a proprietary power connector. The connector is protected by a rubber cap, which, frankly, does not hold firmly in the connector.

The platform for the legs is rubberized, quite wide, two legs parallel to it are placed on it without any problems. There is enough space in front and behind. For example, my daughter and I skated like this: she stood in the front, and I in the back.

The rear fender not only protects against splashes, it also acts as a mechanical brake. Considering the weight of the scooter, rider, impressive wheel diameter and width, it is difficult to quickly stop the scooter by pressing on the wing. It is necessary to move the body weight to the back of the scooter.

There is an LED indicator on the lower frame near the wheels. It glows during braking, charging the device. Other modes can be selected in the smartphone app.

The scooter is equipped with 9-inch wheels with airless tires. They are filled with special foam. The official website says:

“… That’s why they are just as good at damping as pneumatic tires, but at the same time they are puncture-proof. Wheels of this design will allow you to overcome the unevenness of the road surface without shaking and vibration. “

This is both true and not true. Puncture protection is great, but shaking and vibration is all about the E22 as it has no shock absorbers. I will discuss this in detail in a separate section.

I forgot to mention the headlight on the A-pillar. It has 2.5 watts of power and is angled to avoid dazzling the eyes of people in front of you. The glow distance is about 5-7 meters.

Exploitation

Several years ago I actively rode regular scooters. This type of movement was completely fine with me. But after getting a leg injury, I had to give up scooters. The electric scooter was just right.

For the test, the Ninebot-Segway KickScooter E22 was brought to the country. There I tested it. I was lucky with the roads outside the city: from the most unpleasant – only dirt in some parts of the SNT territory and small potholes in the asphalt. The road from the dacha to the shops is almost perfect.

The E22 has a 300W brushless motor. Alas, I could not get more information.

How does overclocking happen? It’s simple: you need to push off and hold the throttle lever. The first movement is necessary for safety: imagine that you have not yet stepped on the scooter, but have accidentally pressed forward.

And here it is worth mentioning three modes of device speed. The first (the screen does not display information about this mode) is necessary in case of energy saving or beginners. The maximum speed up to 16 km / h is gained very smoothly, without a jerk. It will not be possible to drive up a slope in this mode – the scooter will need an exceptionally flat surface.

The second mode (on the screen it is designated as “S” in white) – acceleration to 20 km / h with a quick start. The third (on the screen “S” in red) is almost the same as the second. Only the speed can be up to 22 km / h. In practice, the second and third do not differ, since 22 km / h is a purely theoretical value, mainly 20-21 km / h.

In the first mode, the scooter accelerates to 16 km / h in 10 seconds. The scooter accelerates to 20 km / h in about 4 seconds. The smoothness of the gas is regulated by the corresponding knob. If you know that you will go slowly and then quickly, it is better to switch the scooter to normal mode, since it is inconvenient to regulate the smoothness of gas in the second and third modes: you either go fast or stop.

At maximum speed, the braking distance is about three to four meters (brakes with the front wheel). Can be assisted by a mechanical brake by pinching the rear fender. With a light rider weight and a 20 km / h brake, there is a chance of tipping forward, which is logical. So brake as smoothly as possible.

And here we return to driving over bumps and bumps on the road. The official website says the following:

“… now you can ride without noticing bumps …”

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Every pebble, every millimeter of a broken road, you will feel on yourself in the form of a strong vibration. In order to at least somehow compensate for sections of the road with such a surface, you have to stand on your toes and slightly bend your knees. Otherwise, the vibrations are so tangible that you can’t even see the road.

Therefore, when purchasing this scooter or any other without depreciation, count on where you will ride.

Once upon a time I bought an Oxelo scooter with shock absorption on the front and rear wheels. And then they gave me a review of a cool Razor without springs – heaven and earth! In the first case, I enjoyed driving on any road surface, in the second – exclusively on a mirror surface.

He said nothing about the bias. The scooter can climb a hill of 20-30 degrees in sport mode. In this case, the weight should be transferred to the front of the scooter. But it all depends on the obesity of the passenger 🙂

Runtime, distance and charge

This scooter has a 5,1 Ah / 183 Wh battery. According to the manufacturer’s assurances, the device is capable of driving a distance of up to 22 km in energy-saving mode.

In my case, I squeezed 17-18 km as much as possible in energy saving mode. When you switch to the second mode, you will have approximately 13 km of range. In the third, sport mode – about 10 km.

For a city vehicle, the Ninebot-Segway KickScooter E22 is quite good. For example, from home to metro is about two kilometers, from metro to work, plus or minus the same. On one charge there and back – in the “sport” mode. Surely at work, you can also power the gadget somewhere.

In my case, the battery outside the city was enough end-to-end: the hypermarket was located 6 km from the dacha, so a round trip, and that’s it. Well, or to the “people’s shops” twice (2.5 km one way).

The battery is charged from a relatively large power adapter (42V / 1.7A), reminiscent of laptop chargers. From 0% to 50%, the battery is powered for about 2 hours. From 50% to 80% – in another 2 hours. The rest of the interest gets there for the same amount. In general, it takes about 5-6 hours. Especially 95-100% are given for a long time.

Smartphone applications

It just so happened that my main devices turned out to be smartphones from Huawei and Honor. There was no Segway-Ninebot app in their branded store. I had to install from analogs. The first couple of days I could not understand why the scooter does not connect with the application. It turned out that there are two versions of the programs, and the working version is only the one with the picture of the globe on the avatar.

Then I discovered that the Segway-Ninebot needs Google services, which are not available in Huawei or Honor. It’s good that the same Apple iPhone SE of the first generation, which I wrote about here, came to hand.

The main important things are: battery percentage, remaining mileage, race records with detailed speed / distance information, firmware update. In addition, the app can block the scooter – the front wheel will not move. Of course, you can carry it away, roll away on the rear wheel. But you can’t run far from 13 kg.


Impression

At the dacha, an electric scooter is very useful: for a trip to grocery stores, for household items or building materials (then buy paint / brushes, then nails, then batteries, and so on).

Naturally, a bicycle will be better for your health, and even better on foot. But we’re not talking about idle travel. Taking an electric scooter with you to the park is somewhat odd, albeit fun. I still consider such a device precisely as an assistant: home – work, dacha – shops.

What’s not to like about the Ninebot-Segway KickScooter E22:

  • Very long battery life
  • No battery percentage indication on the scooter screen

What we liked about the Ninebot-Segway KickScooter E22:

Ideal for office workers: for example, in Moscow there is a business park “Krylatskie Hills” (there are Huawei, and Honor, and Microsoft, and Adidas, and Intel, and Cisco Systems) with several buildings. So, for their employees – just right.

Among the competitors, it is necessary to highlight the Xiaomi M365 Pro for 25 rubles with a power reserve of up to 000 km and a speed of up to 30 km / h. As an option – Kugoo HX Pro for 25 rubles (30 km, 0000 km / h). And for 30 rubles you can buy Yamato PES-30 (17 km, 000 km / h). There are probably a dozen more analogs.
