Smartphone review realme X3 Superzoom (RMX2086)

The realme company will hold a presentation today, during which we will talk about the company’s new smartphone – the X3 Superzoom model. The X line is currently the flagship in the manufacturer’s portfolio. I am sure that many people remember the very successful, in my opinion, realme X2 Pro smartphone. I was present at its presentation, and Eldar Murtazin wrote a review of the then flagship.

Already from the name, the focus of the model is obvious: the emphasis is primarily on the photo part and the capabilities of the camera system, the new product, apparently, will take an intermediate place in the line, between the flagship realme X3 Pro on a new processor from Qualcomm and a very similar model realme X3, which differs from the hero of the review by the lack of an option with a zoom 60x. At the moment, there is no information yet about when these smartphones will appear on our market. So it remains to get acquainted with the new product, for sure it will give us a hint of what to expect from the upcoming new products.

Design, dimensions, controls

Visually, the smartphone resembles the realme 6 Pro as much as possible, from the general geometry and double cutout of the front camera to the fast-working side fingerprint scanner, as well as the not-so-convenient vertical main camera unit. A model came to the test in a white version, inspired by the Arctic and its snows, there is also a blue version that “glorifies” the ice. The material of the backrest has undergone high-precision abrasive processing, which gives an additional smoothness to the surface of the backrest, but not to say that it made it too slippery. The advantage of this step was an important aesthetic effect: fingerprints are practically invisible on the glass surface of the back, and the material plays in the light with a pleasant mother-of-pearl shade. I have not seen the blue color, I would venture to suggest that the situation is similar there. The white version is calmer, neutral, the blue is definitely brighter.

With the same dimensions as the 6 Pro, the weight of the novelty has slightly increased, and this despite the rejection of the 3.5 mm jack. Yes, the manufacturer decided not to include this element in the realme X3 Superzoom. I know that many people still use wired headphones and will not be entirely happy with this fact. Well, there is an adapter to help, unfortunately it is not included in the package. The place where the connector was in the previous models is now occupied by a combined slot for SIM-cards, memory expansion is not provided.

Still, certification according to the IPxx standard is not declared, but there is still water protection: an adhesive layer around the perimeter of the case, silicone-glue-sealed connectors and foam rings that protect the gaps of the SIM card slot and the battery are responsible for this parameter. The flash moved a little lower, the camera unit became a little longer, it still protrudes above the surface of the case, creating a slight inconvenience and backlash when entering text on a smartphone lying on the table. The complete cover saves from this. The assembly is monolithic, there are no backlashes and creaks.

At first glance, the realme X3 Superzoom screen is similar to that used in the 6 pro: the same IPS matrix with a diagonal of 6.6 inches and FHD + resolution, which gives a confident 402 dpi, nothing will loosen. But the new product takes a step forward: the refresh rate of the display is 120 Hz, which is quite good for a smartphone with an emphasis on photographic capabilities. The frequency of polling the sensor layer is not announced, most likely, this “chip” will be in the Pro model. The display is not the brightest, slightly reddish when compared to AMOLED.

If you use a smartphone with a screen with a frequency of 90 Hz, then for you the difference between 90 and 120 Hz will not be so great, even if you put the devices next to each other. But from 60 Hz it is already impressive, the visual smoothness of the interface makes itself felt, this is especially evident when scrolling through, for example, settings. In the settings of the realme X3 Superzoom system, you can select automatic frequency selection depending on the application used, as well as constant 60 or 120 Hz. The rest of the screen repeats that of its predecessor.

Despite the powerful processor on board, the smartphone battery confidently copes with the load, giving out at a mixed load about one and a half days of operation from a single charge without any energy saving settings. The cyclic video test showed the result at exactly 24 hours, the result is good, albeit expected. You can improve autonomy by switching the screen frequency to 60 Hz, the interface will not be so smooth, but you will squeeze the extra three hours of work.

Under load with heavy applications, the smartphone loses about 10-12% of its charge per hour, especially for games. But there is no need to worry, since fast charging has become a little faster: now you can fully charge the smartphone in 55 minutes, which is confirmed by my measurements. Of course, not 33 minutes, as in the realme X2 Pro, but we are not talking about the flagship model either.

Memory, chipset, performance

However, the smartphone itself clearly does not agree that it is not a flagship. Judge for yourself: up to 12 GB of UFS 3.0 RAM in conjunction with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+, the cocktail is quite good, I immediately remembered the fierce gaming monster from Asus, there are about the same parameters, except that the battery is more capacious. Even if the processor is not the fastest at the moment, this does not prevent the smartphone from knocking out more than 500 “parrots” in Antutu, and in general it is impossible to find fault with the performance. Heating during games is not very strong, PerfDog gave a maximum of 000 degrees for a half-hour session – apparently, the declared liquid cooling copes with its tasks. With such “hardware” you can not worry that this or that game will slow down, you will not notice anything like that. Games with support for a refresh rate of 56 Hz are especially cool, for example, Real Racing 120, for which 3 frames per second held 120% of the total playing time, which, again, is expected for such a filling. A bit puzzled by the throttling test, the indicators are not very good.

With memory parameters that seem to be similar to ROG Phone 2, its speed in realme X3 Superzoom is slightly higher, the results can be seen in the screenshots. The Turbo Write and HPB (Host Performance Booster) technologies used in UFS 3.0 contribute to the increased performance. Turbo Write launches every read / write process on the high-speed storage section, while HPB accelerates random read performance. In Russia there will be two versions of realme X3 Superzoom – 8/128 and 12/256, the top configuration is closer to me, there is never a lot of memory.

Communication capabilities

NFC works flawlessly, GPS starts up quickly, it is a pity that the second speaker has not appeared yet, its presence is highly desirable for games. The speaker volume is above average, nothing wheezes at the maximum level, the playback is clear and without interference, it is quite possible to use it without headphones, if, of course, the situation allows. Dolby Atmos audio and Hi-Res Audio protocol are supported. There are no questions about wireless interfaces: dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, everything works adequately.

The main feature of the camera system is a periscopic lens with a resolution of 8 megapixels and five times magnification. No, nothing comes out of the case, as is the case with front-facing cameras in individual smartphones. The module received this name for the use of a lens and prism system for working with light, by analogy with the system used in periscopes on submarines. The use of such a module allows you to save a thin profile of the smartphone, such a system needs less space than a familiar sensor.

The advantage of a periscopic camera for the user is a fivex zoom, but the possibilities of magnification do not end there: a focal length of up to 124 mm allows you to achieve a magnification of 60x. Of course, you need to shoot in this mode with a tripod, otherwise it is not easy to catch the subject. For a clear photo, optical image stabilization is provided.

Photo from one point, tripod:

The photo shows that after 20x the frames lose detail, but in general, you can see individual objects. Interesting functionality, you can experiment with it and try to discover the talent of a photographer. However, this never happened to me, I come across shooting directly when testing devices, which suits me perfectly. The question, of course, is whether a hybrid zoom up to 60x will actually become a popular feature. From experience, many are limited to a zoom value of 5x, well, a maximum of 10x.

The leading lens in the rear camera system is the Samsung GW1 sensor, already familiar from many devices, which has a resolution of 64 megapixels and uses the technology of gluing 4 adjacent pixels into one. As a result, a more detailed picture is obtained, and the overall quality of the picture is improved. At the same time, the results of shooting with the activation of the “64 MP” setting in the camera software do not look much better against the background of the resulting frame in automatic mode. In Pro mode, the detail of such frames is improved by the Ultra Clear option, I will quote one of my reviews: The essence of the technology is to combine many frames into one in order to obtain a picture equivalent in size and detail to shooting with a 108 megapixel camera. Shooting in this mode can be carried out on any of the main cameras, I would recommend the main one, the rest noticeably “wash”. In fact, it turns out something like a cropped image (crop), which actually has sharper details ….

Pictures with the main camera with AI scene detection turned on are slightly more overexposed, without it the image is close to the natural picture in terms of color rendition. HDR works a little softer than in the realme 6 Pro, perhaps a subjective impression. I noticed that when shooting, I often turned off all add-ons: HDR, AI, color enhancement, and so on. Apparently, calmer and more natural colors are closer to me, but they will definitely appeal to those users who want to make a picture brighter and more accentuated.

The macro camera has practically not changed, it will be appreciated by those who like to shoot from a short focal length. The shots on the ultra-wide lens have become a little better, apparently, the update arrived on the second day of testing. The situation with the dynamic range, according to my feelings, has improved, but the frames are slightly lighter compared to the main camera. The selected night mode (Nightscape) has significantly improved, I made this conclusion based on night shots: very soft smoothing of noise, no overexposed elements, close to natural colors. Personally, I liked Nightscape more than the tripod mode, the latter often tends to not quite correctly set the white balance. But with due knowledge of graphic editors, you can get plus or minus artistic shots. But I didn’t really like the results of shooting on a machine in low light conditions, I advise you to use Nightscape, the improvement from the previous version is obvious.

Separately, it is worth noting the starry sky shooting option included in the night mode in the camera software. Here you will definitely need a tripod, as well as a cloudless sky away from cities and objects around which light pollution is noted. The algorithm combines 10 long exposure shots, visually accentuates less bright stars, improves overall clarity and removes noise in dark areas of the sky. It looks curious, it is a pity that due to the workload it was not possible to leave the city and test it. For video shooting, ultra-stabilization is still available in UIS and UIS Max, in the latter the image is a little more grainy.

The front-facing camera unit is represented by a 32-megapixel wide-angle Sony IMX616 lens and an auxiliary ultra-wide-angle sensor with a resolution of 8 megapixels. Selfie lovers will clearly be pleased with the quality of the photos, the already traditional face enhancement is available for them. A large number of people can be placed in the frame, no need to use selfie sticks. When shooting video on the front module, portrait mode, slow-motion shooting at 240, 480 and 960 frames per second are supported, as well as UIS stabilization.

The smartphone uses the already familiar realme UI add-on, which has not yet received significant changes, comprehensive information about it is in the editorial review. My impressions of working with her are quite positive, in this regard, nothing has changed either.

The cost of realme X3 Pro will appear on the site a little later, as the presentation takes place, but for now let’s talk about possible competitors. First of all, these can be called the fresh Poco F2 Pro, which received an excellent AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and without any cutouts, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, as well as a system of four main and only one front camera. However, we are not talking about a periscope camera and a zoom greater than 2x, and the smartphone itself is positioned as a gaming one. The cost of the new item is 43 rubles on AliExpress, while the amount of RAM and the general combination of characteristics are, perhaps, on the side of the model from realme.

If we talk about photo flags, then Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro can also be added here: you can add the main 108 MP lens, the aforementioned SD 865 processor, a bright screen and a popular love for the brand. But so far the model is not officially on sale in Russia, compared to the realme X3 Pro in the top version, its cost in “gray” stores is still at a slightly higher level, especially if we talk about the Mi 10 Pro version with 12 GB of RAM.

The Huawei P30 Pro also looks good, which also has a XNUMXx zoom, while it has support for proprietary memory cards, an AMOLED display, albeit not so smooth. On the side of realme – an ultra-wide-angle camera and the already mentioned herzka screen, well, the novelty is slightly cheaper than its counterpart, if you look at the official Huawei store.

In the realme catalog, the already mentioned realme 6 Pro and X2 Pro are possible alternatives. The first one costs half the price, while visually being a complete analogue of the realme X3 Superzoom and having a more modest processor and simpler cameras on board. In turn, realme X2 Pro runs on the same SD855 Plus processor, while it does not have a periscopic and ultra-wide-angle front camera, but it has fast charging and stereo speakers, the display is made using AMOLED technology. For the sake of fairness, it should be noted that all listed devices, except for the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, have a maximum amount of 8 GB of RAM.

Impressions, results

All the time I was testing, one thought did not leave me: realme did what I personally expected from OnePlus in Russia. This, of course, is about the ratio of characteristics and cost of realme devices, even if the software component is still better from colleagues from OnePlus. For their money, at the stage of the start of sales of the realme X3 Superzoom, even the listed competitors will not be so easy to compete with the new product, even though each of them has separate positive aspects. Roughly the same emotions were after the announcement of realme X2 Pro, so there is a certain trend or development strategy.

Smartphone review realme X3 Superzoom (RMX2086)

The advantages of the realme X3 Superzoom can be safely called the advanced camera capabilities for taking photos and videos, confident performance, and a relatively calm design. Someone will not like the abandonment of the minijack and memory card slots, as well as the use of an IPS-screen, which is purely a matter of habit. The overall impression is quite pleasant, even despite the expectation of something new in terms of design, it turned out to be an interesting combination of characteristics of a smartphone with reasonable price positioning.
