British authorities to conduct an antitrust review of the App Store

Competition authorities in the UK have announced their intention to conduct a review of the App Store for potential abuse of its market position by Apple in matters of fair competition. The investigation will be conducted by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), a non-ministerial government agency, Bloomberg writes.

The ministry said it would examine Apple’s potentially “dominant” position in the supply of applications to iPhones and iPads.

“Complaints that Apple uses its market position to impose conditions of use on the platform that may be unfair, restricts competition for developers and choices for users to buy and use apps require careful scrutiny.”, – commented the head of the CMA Andrea Coscelli.

Apple responded by saying it is willing to partner with the UK regulator to explain how its privacy, security and app policies have made the App Store a trusted platform for both consumers and developers.
