Apple has patented the unique design of the Apple Watch with a flexible display strap. Writes about this MacRumors. The corresponding patent was found in the database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The patent was named Display Module and System Applications. The document describes a device with a flexible display that covers the entire strap and dial area. The flexible display is said to be soft enough to replace a regular strap and remain comfortable enough for the user’s hand.
The document also implies that the display area of the watch is not strictly limited to the dial. One of the options is to display additional information on the strap. However, a classic wristwatch format with a variable strap design is also provided. With its help, users will be able to create unique images for their devices.
The company notes that OLED displays may remain vulnerable to moisture and air without a glass cover, but they believe some technology could make displays suitable for new designs.
Apple has no experience in manufacturing and servicing devices with flexible displays yet, but the company is rumored to be working on a smartphone with flexible display. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims the company will launch the first such device in 2023. Presumably, when unfolded, the smartphone will be comparable to the size of an iPad Mini.
