Recently, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces adopted the second attack diesel submarine with lithium batteries. Avoiding comparatively large lead-acid batteries allows you to double your energy reserve and free up space. Apparently, the operating experience turned out to be positive, and in the future, the Japanese submarine fleet will use only lithium batteries.

Аккумуляторы для корабля разработала компания GS Yuasa, а постройкой занималась компания Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Принятая сегодня на вооружение подлодка SS-512 «Торю» стала вторым подводным кораблём с литиевыми аккумуляторами и стала последней для серии типа «Сорю». Всего выпущено и принято на вооружение 12 подводных лодок этого типа.

The next type of submarine in Japan will be the Project 29SS series. The first ship in the series, the new generation submarine Taigei, was launched for operational tests last autumn. It will enter service in 2022 and will be the first of seven next-generation ships. Submarine “Taigei” was originally designed for the operation of lithium batteries.

The dimensions of the SS-512 “Toryu” submarine are 84 m in length, 9,1 m in width and 10,3 m in height. The displacement is 2950 tons, and the speed reaches 20 knots. The next generation submarines will be the same size, but will receive new weapons and a redesigned design.
