Leaks and rumors have surfaced this month that DJI is preparing to launch a successor to the Mavic Air 2, dubbed the Air 2S. Confidence in this is supported by a recent filing with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). And the resource DroneDJ, citing its sources, said that the Air 2S will support the new DJI Goggles V2 helmet.
The FCC filing dealt with the Air 2S drone with the ID DA2SUE12011. It also mentioned a 3500mAh battery – the same as the current Mavic Air 2. Among the key innovations expected is the camera: renowned informant OsitaLV tweeted that the Air 2S should receive a new Sony IMX686 sensor.
In other words, the camera in the new drone will become more light-sensitive due to the increased physical size (1 / 1,7 ″ versus 1/2 ″), and will also be able to take photos at a resolution of up to 64 megapixels versus 48 megapixels for the old device. Some other improvements can be expected, such as a more advanced HDR mode, but the maximum video capabilities will still remain 4K @ 60fps.
You can also expect an improvement in connection quality: with the launch of the DJI FPV drone, the company announced OcuSync 3.0 technology. It is mainly designed to reduce latency compared to OcuSync 2.0 to improve high speed FPV flight capabilities. DJI Goggles V2 support speaks for this.
You can also expect support for DJI Airsense, an ADS-B receiver. In the case of the Mavic Air 2, the company supplied a model with an ADS-B receiver that allows the drone pilot to know about nearby aircraft, only in North America. Now the company is likely to expand its support for this capability to the international model as well. Another innovation of the Air 2S may be an extended flight time – the original model had a declared ceiling of 34 minutes.
It’s not clear when the announcement will be made, but the Mavic Air 2 was unveiled at the end of April 2020.
