Microsoft announced the end of support for the Cortana app on Android and iOS platforms. The company’s own voice assistant became available to mobile users in November 2019, and last year the developers announced plans to end support for it. Previously, Microsoft also stopped offering the standalone Cortana app in select markets, including the UK, China and India.
«Effective March 31, 2021, user-generated content using Cortana, such as reminders and lists, will no longer work in the Cortana mobile app, but will still be available through Cortana on Windows. Plus, Cortana’s reminders, lists and tasks are automatically synced to the Microsoft To-Do app, which you can download for free on your smartphone.“, – said in a message from Microsoft.
The developers announced their intention to end support for the mobile version of Cortana last year. At that time, Microsoft explained this step with plans to move to “the transformative AI-powered assistant experience in Microsoft 365“. Since then, the integration of the voice assistant with Microsoft’s cloud service has been vastly improved and Cortana is currently one of the highlights of the enterprise suite.
It’s worth noting that the consumer version of Cortana has never been able to become something like Google Assistant on Android devices or Amazon Alexa in smart speakers. Google has made efforts to deeply integrate the voice assistant with the Android software platform and provided support for a large number of languages, and Amazon’s voice assistant has found its place in a wide range of smart speakers.
