The United States is preparing in response to the imposition of several countries against American online companies operating in its jurisdiction, such as Amazon.com Inc. and Facebook Inc., to impose duties on their goods worth nearly $ 1 billion annually, Bloomberg reported.

According to documents released by the United States Trade Office (USTR), the duty could be up to 25% per year and will apply to goods imported into the United States, from Austrian grand pianos and British carousels to Turkish carpets and Italian anchovies.

For each of the six countries, including Austria, the United Kingdom, India, Spain, Italy and Turkey, the US agency proposes to introduce duties roughly equal to the amount of tax revenues each of them is expected to receive from US companies. According to Bloomberg News calculations, the total annual fee cost is $ 880 million.

In turn, the Internet association, of which Amazon, Facebook and Google Alphabet Inc. are members, welcomed the move by the US Trade Office. Public discussion of his proposed duties will take place in the first half of May.

It should be noted that, through the mediation of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the possibility of replacing digital taxes for each individual country with a single global standard is being discussed, but an agreement on this has not yet been reached.
