Positioning

After the recent two-day presentation, the positioning of the Xiaomi Mi 11 has become more difficult. Initially, in this section I wrote that this is the main flagship of the company, but after the release of the Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra uberflags, I had to rewrite the section, as this smartphone neatly moved to the second / third place. Perhaps the main difference from the older models is the cameras. Mi 11 Pro and Ultra have new 50 MP photo modules with the new Dual Pixel Pro technology. And even more so, the company called Mi 11 Ultra the pinnacle of photo smartphones, while Mi 11 has a customary 108 MP module.

The second difference is that the Pro and Ultra are IP68 rated. And the third difference: the new devices have a slightly larger battery (5000 mAh versus 4 mAh) and insanely fast wired and wireless charging 600 W, giving 67% in 100 minutes. Mi 36, by the way, is also doing great in the matter of fast charging (11 W, 55% in 100 minutes, wireless 45 W, 50% in 100 minutes).

In general, Mi 11 and Mi 11 Pro are similar models, they even have approximately the same price. The Mi 11 Pro can be seen as a cosmetic facelift for the Mi 2020 presented at the end of December 11.

Xiaomi highlights the following as the main features that make buyers want to purchase the device:

  • Cinematic camera. Here it is necessary to clarify in more detail that we are talking not only about the 108 MP module, but also about:
    • Optical stabilization
    • HDR10 + video recording
    • Powerful night shooting
    • Cinematic video effects
    • Macro camera 5 MP
  • AMOLED screen, 3200 × 1440 pixels, DCI-P3 100%, 120 Hz, 480 Hz, touch processing, 1500 nits peak brightness, HDR10 +, high-precision color rendering JNCD≈0.38, Gorilla Victus protective glass
  • Harman / kardon stereo speakers
  • Frosted glass case
  • Snapdragon 888 chipset, LPDDR5 RAM + UFS 3.1 storage, Wi-Fi 6, 5G support, Bluetooth 5.2
  • Fast wired charging 55W, wireless charging 50W, reverse wireless charging 10W
  • In-screen heart rate sensor
  • There are versions with a special design and signature of the founder of Xiaomi Lei Jun (see below on the far left)

Equipment

In the box:

  • Smartphone
  • 55W USB Type-A Adapter
  • cover
  • Clip
  • Instructions

Perhaps the only interesting thing to note here is that the adapter is wrapped in thin parchment, and the cable is intercepted by a piece of cardboard. This is cool. But the case with the documents and the smartphone itself are still in plastic wrappers.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

My opinion is that manufacturers should agree to have all electronics (from phones to refrigerators) in the most nondescript, but highly recyclable packaging. A colorful box and plastic-wrapped wires are cool, but let’s be honest – it only pleases a second, and then goes to the trash.

Appearance

Xiaomi Mi 11 is the most beautiful Xiaomi smartphone that I have seen. Weight, silky body texture, thinnest bezels and an unrealistically beautiful screen – a quick glance is enough to understand that this is a top flagship. Here Xiaomi worked 100%.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

There is bright sunlight from the window, the body of the smartphone looks very good.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

Under normal lighting conditions, the body looks monochromatic. The smartphone fits perfectly in the hand. There is a cover in the kit, but I used it like that. Very nice body materials.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

The scanner is in the screen, and the factory film is glued to the screen. Invisible, of good quality, you don’t need to shoot right away, as it doesn’t interfere with the scanner. But in general, the smartphone has Gorilla Glass Victus, which should protect the device from major damage (everyone will always have small scratches)

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

At the bottom there is a microphone, speakers, and a Type-C connector for charging, a slot for 2 nano-SIM. There is no 3.5 mm jack, like a microSD slot, in the smartphone.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

At the top there is a microphone, infrared port and one more stereo speaker.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

If you look closely, there is an inscription that the sound is in collaboration with harman / kardon. Cool touch.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

The camera module is pleasing to the eye.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

There are no controls on the left side.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

On the right side is the volume control and the power button.

The smartphone turned out to be original. When you look at it, you cannot say that it was spied on or copied somewhere. I especially like the design of the cameras. It turned out both stylish and laconic, and most importantly, the modules are neat and piled over the body. And then the whole description, as usual, in the captions to the pictures.

Screen

Xiaomi is very proud to have received an A + rating from DisplayMate. This means that some of our readers may even decide that the Mi 11 screen is better than the iPhone 12 Pro Max and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Jokes aside, however, the Xiaomi Mi 11 has one of the best screens available on the market. You want to watch movies, TV shows, games on it. Everything looks awesome.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

Resolution 3200 × 1440 pixels, DCI-P3 100%, 120 Hz, 480 Hz, touch processing, 1500 nits peak brightness, HDR10 +, high-precision color rendering JNCD≈0.38, Gorilla Glass Victus.

The user can choose between two modes – 120Hz and 60Hz. 120Hz works in system apps and interface menus, but in stills and third-party apps (like YouTube), the standard 60Hz.

In games, it depends on the specific release. Some support 120Hz, some only 60Hz. But the main point in games (especially in shooters) is the handling of 480 Hz touches (the standard value for an ordinary smartphone is 120 Hz). The character reacts much faster to the player’s actions. Unfortunately, this cannot be captured in a photo or video. But you will immediately feel the difference.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

The specs claim an insane peak brightness of 1500 nits. It is important to understand that such brightness is rather theoretical. It is difficult to detect it with the device. Usually it works when there is relevant content on the screen (it’s not for nothing that the smartphone supports HDR10 +). For example, in a certain scene, an increased brightness can be laid. Manually, by unscrewing the brightness slider, you will not get 1500 nits. I will say more, in manual mode, the screen gives out only 530 nits. Why is that? Well, just an AMOLED screen is a thin and energy-consuming thing, so the user was not entrusted with all the settings.

Maximum brightness (not to be confused with peak) is only available in auto mode. I managed to measure 940 nits. Top value. More than the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but smaller than the Galaxy S21 Ultra. By the way, Xiaomi Mi Ultra has a cool option – day mode. In short, even with auto brightness disabled, this option can increase the screen brightness, but will not lower it below the user-set limit.

Xiaomi Mi 11 ReviewXiaomi Mi 11 Review

100% DCI-P3 + 10-bit color gamut, that is, the screen can display more than 1 billion colors (a typical smartphone screen is 16 million colors). The rest of the settings are typical for MIUI 12 shell and AMOLED screen. By the latter, I mean the presence of the Always-On screen option.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

On the Always-On screen, you can display both hours, tasks, calendar, and simply motivating inscriptions.

The screen has a PWM, like all AMOLED screens, but, firstly, it is visually low, and secondly, Xiaomi has a trick – eliminating flickering (enabled in the settings), so when working at low brightness (for example, when you read before bedtime) it is better to run it.

Separately, I note that the smartphone has several options to improve the picture. Perhaps most notable is the HDR video enhancement. But it all depends on the video. Somewhere it is appropriate, somewhere, on the contrary, the picture becomes too acidic. I recommend experimenting.

Performance

Latest Snapdragon 888, latest memory (LPDDR5 RAM + UFS 3.1 storage) and Wi-Fi 6 communications, 5G support, Bluetooth 5.2. This is the top hardware for 2021, which will be relevant 3 years later.

Xiaomi Mi 11 ReviewXiaomi Mi 11 Review

In general, there is even nothing to disassemble here, so everything flies. I was especially impressed by the performance of the RAM – 50 MB / s. Space. The drive doesn’t lag behind either.

The AnTuTu metrics are also unrealistic.

In the 3DMark benchmark, the Mi11 purposefully lowered 95% of all Galaxy S21 Ultra 5Gs. Separately, I was pleased that there are still 5% of smartphones that do not give up. Apparently, they were given to management and influencers.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

GeekBench and PC mark are familiar. Pay attention to the temperature graph. The smartphone does not heat up.

Here are the results of the graphics test. At the moment, as they say, it can’t be cooler.

In terms of throttling, the result is not bad. Decrease in performance by 15%, which consistently occurs at the very end of the test. But in any case, the smartphone has such a power reserve that even 30% throttling would not be noticeable. Considering that the smartphone has games like “Genshen Impact” (10 GB each), the smartphone can be used as a game console, displaying the image on the TV.

Communication capabilities

I’ll tell you right away that by default there is a recording of phone calls.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

Audio recording of calls is available out of the box.

Of course, there is NFC. IR transmitters have become a feature of Xiaomi smartphones, so that the smartphone can be used as a remote control for household appliances (the Me Remote application or any other from the Google Play Store.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

The smartphone has 5G and the right modem. So, in theory, Mi 11 owners can get an invitation from MTS to test the 5G zone. VoLTE available, VoWiFi you know how to enable.

Xiaomi Mi 11 ReviewXiaomi Mi 11 Review

If you have already acquired a Wi-Fi 6 router, then you will be pleased with the support of the new generation of Wi-Fi in your smartphone. By the way, the smartphone can be used as an access point and Wi-Fi 6 can be distributed. For example, for me this was the only way to check that the test laptop supports Wi-Fi 6.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

Battery life

A 55W adapter is included with the smartphone, and the smartphone also supports 50W fast wireless charging. In 50 minutes, the smartphone is gaining 100%, in 30 minutes – 80%.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

The smartphone also has reversible wireless charging, which means it can recharge other gadgets. The smartphone has a 4600 mAh battery, so it seems logical to recharge the headphones if they support wireless charging (but you can also over the wire).

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

Battery life depends on your scenarios and screen brightness. While watching a video in airplane mode, the smartphone gives an average of about 15 hours. In real-world situations, you can count on 10 hours of screen life, according to the PC Mark test at maximum brightness in manual mode. On a 120Hz screen, PCMark delivered 7.5 hours. Games – 6 to 9 hours depending on the screen frequency.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

Камеры

The smartphone has a standard camera interface for Xiaomi smartphones. I would also like to note that there is a cool option in the settings that turns off the screen after 3 minutes when shooting a video.

I also liked the Supermoon mode for shooting the moon. Below – just the Moon and the Moon through the “Supermoon”.

Maximum zoom 30x. Sadly, a smartphone doesn’t have a real TV camera. The maximum magnification can be used to view something in the distance. If you enlarge the houses in the photo below, you can see the inscription “Tetris”.

However, there is still a 2x optical zoom, or, as Apple would say, there is a 2.5 zoom! After all, there is an ultra-width of 0.5.

The macro camera is surprisingly good. Provokes research.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Review

Basic daytime camera examples. In the photo of the church, note that the smartphone caught pigeons in flight. Excellent sharpness. Overall, I liked how the smartphone shoots. Dogs and not the most diligent citizens, but all the photos with them turned out to be clear and sharp.

Night shooting and shooting in low light conditions. Here the device can be praised. At night, the camera sees much better than the human eye. For example, it was almost impossible to see the graffiti on the house in reality, but the photo turned out to be clear and rich.

Portrait shooting with the main camera with and without blur.

Examples of shooting with a selfie camera.

Conclusion

Xiaomi has got a flagship smartphone, which has not only good hardware, but even additional whistles. For example, a heart rate sensor in a fingerprint scanner (Mi Health app)

Xiaomi Mi 11 ReviewXiaomi Mi 11 Review

Separately, I note that the MIUI 12 shell has been so cleansed during the pandemic that advertising has disappeared from it. So the section “Advertising” in the description of the shell at the link below is no longer relevant.

In this regard, Xiaomi even beats Samsung. The latter does not allow you to disable ads, while Xiaomi allows you to customize everything. I can note that out of the box the smartphone is too talkative and constantly offers notifications, news, applications in the curtain. And it cannot be said that this is bad. Initially, everything is included, and then the user already configures the device for himself. All this is configured literally in the first day of work: a notification pops up – click “Disable”.

So far, only “gray” devices are sold in Russia for 63 thousand rubles. And I can’t call the price overpriced. Xiaomi has got a flagship that is worth its money. The main competitor for the Mi 11 will be the Mi 11 Pro. On his side is a new camera system, a slightly larger battery and IP68 protection. And the price is the same as the Mi 11.

After the disappearance of Huawei from the world markets, we can absolutely say that Xiaomi is taking the empty place of the A-brand, which will compete with Samsung. However, you don’t have to worry about Samsung’s position, since the company’s main market is the United States, where the Chinese have been ordered to enter.
