Шотландская компания Orbital Marine Power завершила развёртывание и запуск приливной турбины Orbital O2, которую производители называют «самой мощной в мире». Установку длиной 72 метра и массой 680 тонн перевезли по морю из порта Дании к Оркнейским островам.

The declared capacity of the plant is 2 megawatts. According to the development company, the turbine will be able to produce enough electricity annually to power about 2 homes and reduce the total volume of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere by 2200 tons.

Development of the Orbital O2 tidal turbine began in 2019. The Scottish government has allocated 3,4 million British pounds for the project.

According to the non-profit organization Ocean Energy Europe, in 2020 tidal generation across Europe increased by only 260 kilowatts. According to the plan of the European Commission, by 2025 the capacity of oceanic energy in the EU should reach 100 megawatts, and by 2030, overcome the milestone of 1 gigawatt.
