Starting with Build 17763.404, Windows added a policy that determines whether Windows can programmatically disconnect a computer from the network. Today we are going to look at how to enable or disable soft disconnect from the computer in Windows 10
If this policy setting is enabled or not configured, Windows will programmatically disconnect the computer from the network when it detects that the computer should no longer be connected to the network.
If this policy setting is disabled, Windows will immediately disconnect the computer from the network when it detects that the computer should no longer be connected to the network.
If the software disable option is enabled, the following conditions apply.
– If Windows detects that the computer should no longer be connected to the network, it waits for the main traffic to pass through that network. The existing TCP session will continue without interruption.
– Windows periodically checks the level of traffic on the network. If it exceeds a certain threshold, no action is taken. The computer remains connected to the network and continues to use it. For example, if a network connection is currently being used to download files from the Internet, file downloads will continue using that connection.
– If the volume of network traffic falls below a certain threshold, the computer is disconnected from this network. Applications that keep the network connection active even if they are not actively using it (for example, email applications) may lose this connection. In such a case, these applications must re-establish the connection over another network.
Enable or disable soft disconnection of a computer from the network in group policies
1. Open Group Policy: in the search bar or in the Run menu (run by pressing Win + R) enter gpedit.msc and press the Enter key.
2. Follow the path Computer configuration => Administrative Templates => Network => Windows Connection Manager => open the parameter Allow soft disconnection of the computer from the network
3. To enable soft disconnection from the network – put a point next to “Enabled” or “Not configured” and click on “OK”.
To disable the soft disconnect from the network – put a point next to “Disabled” and click on “OK”. Close the Local Group Policy Editor.
Enable or disable soft disconnect of the computer from the network in the registry editor
1. In the search bar or in the “Run” menu (run by pressing the Win + R keys) enter regedit and press the Enter key.
2. Follow the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Policies Microsoft Windows WcmSvc GroupPolicy => right-click on the GroupPolicy section, select “New” => “DWORD Parameter (32 bit)” => name the new parameter fSoftDisconnectConnections
3. Open the parameter fSoftDisconnectConnections => to enable soft disconnection from the network – in the “Value” field enter 1 and click on “OK”. To disable soft disconnection from the network – in the “Value” field, enter 0 and click on “OK”. Close the registry editor, in some cases you need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
That’s all for today, if you know other methods, write in the comments! Good luck ?
