To use a new font in Word or simply change the system font of the operating system – first you must install the font on your operating system.

After installation, it will become available for all programs in this operating system. Most applications do not offer to download and install a font, but offer a choice only to use the installed system fonts.

Warning: Too many fonts can slow down your computer. That is, you do not need to install all the fonts that you could find on the Internet, use only the ones you need, and if after a while they become unnecessary, delete them. It is also not recommended to delete fonts that are installed by the system! This warning may be relevant for old computers, you may not notice the differences in work from the number of fonts on new ones.

Windows

To install a font on Windows, you must first download it in OpenType (.otf), PostScript Type 1 (.pfb + .pfm), TrueType (.ttf), or TrueType Collection (.ttc) format. When you download the font, open it by double-clicking it and the system will immediately prompt you to install it. Alternatively, you can right-click on it and select Install. If you downloaded the font in the archive, unpack it before installing.

To find all installed fonts in the system, write “Fonts” in the search bar and select from the found. You can also go to “Control Panel” => and select “Fonts”

In the opened folder with fonts, you can view them or by clicking on any font with the right key – delete it. Also, if you drag any font into this folder, it will be installed on the system.

Mac OS X

To install a font on Mac OS X – first download it in OpenType (.otf), TrueType (.ttf), Datafork TrueType Suitcase (.dfont), or PostScript Type 1 format => double-click the downloaded file and select “Install font ”(Install Font).

You will find a list of installed fonts in the Font Book app. To open it, open Finder, select Applications in the sidebar, and double-click Font Book. To launch it from your keyboard, press Ctrl + Space to open Spotlight search, type “Font Book” and press Enter.

In the menu that opens, you can see all installed fonts. By clicking on any font with the right mouse button – you can delete or disable the font, if you choose to disable the font – then at any time you can enable it again.

Linux

Different Linux distributions come with different working environments, and these different desktop environments contain different font applications.

In principle, installing a font in a circle is similar, that is, first download the required one in TrueType (.ttf), PostScript Type 1 (.pfb + .pfm) or OpenType (.otf) formats. Double-click the downloaded file and click “Install” in the upper right corner.

Also, by going to the Fonts folder, you can view, add or remove fonts.
