Referee’s view: Harry Kane should have seen red – his status as England captain may have saved him

In fairness to Tierney, he does not have the best view – but in that case, why hasn’t the Var come in to help him? It is a clear and obvious error, so he should have been invited to give it a second look on the monitor.

The Var should have got involved like it did later with Roberston. It’s so obvious. They were sitting comfortably over in Stockley Park, behind the scenes saying ‘let’s not get involved’. If they don’t see that as a clear and obvious error then they shouldn’t be doing the job. It’s as simple as that.

I’m sure if Tierney had seen it again then he would have changed his mind. There’s a lack of accountability, a lack of recognition – these are basic laws.

They got the Robertson incident right but the match officials have shown how inconsistent they are. Jurgen Klopp has every right to feel frustrated.
