Eke out every ounce of knowledge from Jimmy about how to bowl at this level and keep him involved but bowlers like Saqib Mahmood and Olly Stone need a run in the team. There will be around 60 Tests before England play in Australia again. Are we going to come back here and win with guys who have played only five or 10 Tests? No.

I have seen enough in Stuart Broad to think he still has a bit to offer, if his heart is still in it. He is young enough and getting rid of both at the same time is not the right call. But Broad has to show the character and determination of Sydney. The way he batted at the end is how I want him to bat all the time in Test cricket.

Leadership is not about seniority. You can be a leader in your outlook and how you carry yourself as a 20 year old.

Just because you are 35 and played 100 Tests does not mean you are a leader. You are a senior player. There is a big difference.  The white ball team has four or five people who can captain the side and it would not change the result. The Test team have one. That is it.

The Test team needs a group of players like the 2019 World Cup squad. By the time they reached that competition they had a senior core who had played together for four years and knew their roles. That is the vision for the Test team. Come back here with a senior group of players, which means a lot of people have to have played a lot of Tests over the next four years.

Joe will say we need better pitches in county cricket, and to change the ball so our next generation learns to bat for longer which will drive more pace, more spin in the domestic game.

We will not suddenly unearth a Pat Cummins or Marnus Labuschagne in the next year. It will take a few years to reach that stage but first and foremost you have to create the system for that to happen.  Let’s use the Kookaburra ball at home against New Zealand this summer. Don’t just make the change in county cricket.
