Chelsea booked their place in the Carabao Cup final with a 3-0 semi-final aggregate win over Tottenham, whose hopes of a comeback were denied by Var misery.

Thomas Tuchel’s men did half the job in last week’s first leg at Stamford Bridge when they won 2-0 and Antonio Rudiger’s first-half goal in north London settled matters, setting up a Wembley date against either Liverpool or Arsenal next month.

They will get a chance to claim a sixth League Cup and give Tuchel the opportunity of winning a third trophy in just over 14 months in the job.

Spurs were well beaten over the course of the two games, but it could have been different had technology not ruled against them on three occasions in the second leg.

Referee Andre Marriner twice awarded penalties that were overturned while Harry Kane had a goal ruled out for offside as they missed out on a second successive appearance in the final.

An early save from Lukaku was quickly forgotten when the keeper – a surprise inclusion ahead of Hugo Lloris – failed to deal with the corner that led to Rudiger’s goal.

The defender endured a testing time during the first leg and he was again caught out when he failed to track Rudiger for the opening goal.

Davinson Sanchez 6
A poor defensive header gifted Timo Werner an early chance and he looked vulnerable against the pace of the German. Came close to scoring with a first-half header.

The defender was caught out by Lukaku early on and was then bundled off the ball too easily by Christensen before settling into the game.

Struggled to contain the threat of Hudson-Odoi but when he did manage to get forward the wing-back drew a fine save from Kepa with a powerful header. 

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 7
The midfielder had already seen a shot deflected wide before his strong forward run drew the foul from Rudiger that prompted referee Marriner to award a penalty before the intervention of Var.

Harry Winks 5
Chelsea’s first-half dominance forced the midfielder to focus on his defensive duties. A miscued forward pass early in the second half summed up a difficult evening for the 25 year-old.

Matt Doherty 5
The wing-back worked alongside Davies on the left-hand side of the Spurs defence but offered little threat going forward and it was no surprise when he was replaced.

Giovani, Lo Celso 5
Conte talked up Lo Celso’s ability to fill the No 10 role before kick-off but the Argentine struggled to exert his influence on the game.

Harry Kane 6
Nullified in the first leg, the England striker was more prominent here, coming close to connecting with Sanchez’s header before seeing a second-half effort ruled out for offside.

Lucas Moura 6
Showed some promising touches but didn’t do enough to unsettle the Chelsea defence, although he and might have equalised if Kane had not overhit a through-ball.

A steady, controlled display from the experienced right-back who ensured Tottenham were able to pose only an occasional threat down their left-hand flank.

Settled after conceding a free-kick in a dangerous area early on. Rushed a pass to Werner that might have brought a second, but otherwise eased his way through the game.

Antonio Rudiger 8
Showed more determination than the unconvincing Spurs defenders to head Chelsea ahead. A commanding presence, although a clumsy challenge on Hojbjerg might have proved costly.

Malang Sarr 7
Slotted in impressively into the left-back role, pressing forward at every opportunity and forming a commanding partnership with Hudson-Odoi.

Mason Mount 7
The England midfielder rarely puts a foot wrong and while this was one of his quieter nights, he worked hard to help link Chelsea’s play as they dominated the first half .

Jorginho 7
A typically effective performance from the midfielder, who helped restore calm when Tottenham threatened to force their way back into the game.

Mateo Kovacic 7
The midfielder once again stood out as his partnership with Jorginho provided the platform for Chelsea to assume control and effectively kill off the tie.

Callum Hudson-Odoi 7
Almost managed a repeat of his fine weekend strike with a shot that flew just wide, while his forward efforts were matched by his work dealing with Emerson’s forward runs.

Romelu Lukaku 6
Should have made more of two first-half opportunities but the forward’s presence was enough to prevent Tottenham’s unconvincing backline from settling.

Timo Werner 6
The forward was always ready to make himself available to receive the ball but was unconvincing when he had the chance to get on the scoresheet with an attempted lob.
